Chapter 1: Onigiri

Chapter Text

Sakusa Kiyoomi was simple, a “don’t talk unless spoken to” kind of guy. His parents wanted him to go off to college straight after highschool, so he did. He majored in Physical Exercise Science at The University of Tokyo and graduated highest in his class. He always had to be perfect in everything that he did, or at least as close to perfect as possible.

He had a routine every morning and every evening before going to bed early. He didn’t like feeling tired unless it was for volleyball. He didn’t like crowds either and contrary to belief it wasn’t because of germs, it was because he didn’t like socializing much. It bored him most of the time or he just didn’t understand inside jokes or social cues that other people would get on the first go.

He was simple. He reads every morning, has a balanced breakfast and cleans his apartment whenever he feels it’s needed or when stressed. Once Sakusa graduated university he started to apply for different volleyball teams in Tokyo, he didn’t want to move away from his familiar surroundings. MSBY was the first team to call back right away and he started tryouts today. For once, he was nervous. He’d always been confident in his abilities and skills but this wasn’t highschool or college. This was a TOKYO TEAM. If he messed up, word would spread throughout all the other teams.

Motoya Komori, Sakusa’s cousin, had already joined a team. His team had Suna from Inarizaki, a team they had played against in highschool in nationals. Kiyoomi was worried about not knowing anyone on his team and having to “befriend” people in order to fit in.
He packed the things he needed for tryouts in his duffle bag and started to head out to the area the manger had sent out on the email yesterday afternoon.

Whatever Sakusa was excepting for tryouts wasn’t this. It was like normal tryouts and somewhat more relaxed. The coach wasn’t too much of a stickler about things and there weren’t that many people at tryouts. They already had a couple of people on the team already so most of the people who applied and had little experience did not make it past the second informational email. The people here were people he had seen before but never really interacted with, either during highschool nationals or in college games. This made him relax a bit.

Once tryouts were over and once most people had left the coach and captain called Kiyoomi over. “Weren’t you in the top three aces in the country in highschool?” said Coach Foster. Sakusa simply nodded “I think you’d fit in here, Sakusa. Your form early was the best I’ve seen all day.” Sakusa looked over to the captain who’s name he learned was Shūgo Meian when he introduced himself earlier at tryouts, “Only thing is that you need to loosen up a little. I could tell you were nervous from a mile away.” Meian chuckled “we're observing you but it’s okay to mess up too.” Sakusa sighed “I apologize, I was nervous that there would be more people. I'm a bit more relaxed now.” he bowed. “Hey hey, no need to get all formal. I know this is early but a couple of the people on our team are very fond of you.” Sakusa stared in confusion. “Who?” he asked. “You’ll find out later today. Thank you for coming today.” Meian and Coach Foster stuck out their hand for Sakusa to shake. Hesitantly Sakusa shook back. “Thank you for having me.” he bowed and walked out.

As Sakusa got home to his apartment he got a text from an unknown group chat.

MSBY CHAT!:

Miya: “Welcome to the group chat omi omi!”

Bokuto: “WAIT OMI MADE THE TEAM!?!?”

Meian: “bokuto stop, I can hear you yelling.”

Hinata: “welcome Omi-san :>”

Bokuto: “ HI KIYOOMIII!”

Sakusa sighed “dear god.” he opened the chat and started typing… erasing.. No. Typing again.

Sakusa: “Thanks for the welcome. Also hi Bokuto.”

“Was that too much? Maybe? It felt sarcastic” he mumbles to himself and lightly tosses his phone to the side.

The next day he woke up at 5 am to get ready for his first early morning practice with the team. He stretched in bed and just laid there for a second. It was cold. He let out a slight groan and got himself up. He put on a pair of plaid pj pants over the boxers he wore to bed, knowing that he'd change straight after. Still shirtless, he trailed to his restroom. The bathroom was also simple, the theme was black grey and white and absolutely spotless of any dirt, dust, or misplaced items. Letting out a yawn, he brushed his teeth, took a quick shower, got dressed and headed out the door.
Sakusa didn’t seem like the person to get small take out meals from a Konbini, because he didn’t do it too often. Only when he was too lazy to cook or too tired and today he was both.
He took two onigiri, one plum onigiri and one cherry blossom onigiri, and headed back to his car. Ofc he had other healthy snacks for after practice and an extra water bottle at all times. Just in case he really needed it.

Once he arrived at the parking lot his phone buzzed two times in his pocket.

MSBY CHAT!:

Hinata: “DID ANYONE BRING OR BUY FOOD. I THOUGHT I WAS
LATE SO I’M AT THE COURT EARLY ;;”

Miya: “sorry Shoyo, I’m already out the door and in the car.”

Bokuto: “I’m with Atsumu but have extra k bar crisps if you want some?
They’re blueberry flavour :)”

Hinata: “thanks Bo.”

He got out of his car and saw Hinata sitting outside on the bench pouting while scrolling through his phone. Sakusa almost laughs not at him but at how upset he had gotten over forgetting his food at home. He sits next to the orange haired boy. “Rough morning huh?” He says softly.
“Yeah, I don’t know why I forgot to check the time before I left the house.” Hinata sighs heavily.

Sakusa looks at his bag and looks back at Hinata. He grabs the Onigiri and passes it to Hinata. “Here” Hinata just blankly stares at him “you’re sharing your food with me?! Are you sure?” Sakusa nods and pushes it lightly into Hinata's hands. “ I insist.” Sakusa pulls his mask down and starts eating his plum onigiri and Hinata starts to slowly unwrap his, with a warm feeling. “Thank you Omi-san.” Sakusa chokes and looks back at the ginger. “You don’t have to call me that.” he mumbles. “What should I call you then?” He says, admiring the pinkish color the cherry blossom brought on the onigiri “whatever you want.” Sakusa shrugs.

“Okay~” Hinata says with a mouthful of onigiri, cheeks rosy and smiling. Sakusa holds back a chuckle.
