This Magic Moment

Summary:

In which Junmyeon's date is an asshole, but hey, Sehun's date is a jerk too.

Notes:

I haven't written for so long and I'm rusty now ;-; But this was fun to write! I was this close to turning this into a 10k oneshot, but this is perfect just the way it is. Unless?

Work Text:

This was possibly Junmyeon’s shittiest date ever in his whole entire life. He had adored this man from afar for so long and finally was introduced to each other through a mutual friend and Junmyeon finally had the guts to ask him out.

Junmyeon had never expected him to agree, but here they are on a somewhat private table towards the back of the fanciest restaurant, overlooking the view of the city at night. They had ordered drinks and settled into small talks, mainly about the weather and how their day went. But Junmyeon soon no longer sees the world with rose tinted glasses when his date had a little bit more than just a glass.

He had the impression that today would go well, but hope quickly turned into disdain when his date got drunk and endlessly rambled about how people who worked a 9-5 job are lazy and could do better than being stuck behind the same desk for years, why Junmyeon’s choice of career sucked (which he definitely took offense of and did not wasted almost 10 years of studying to be fairly paid and doing the thing that he loves the most at the same time), was rude to the waiters who served them, and went on and on about how shitty Junmyeon’s hometown is.

Junmyeon tried his best to agree to disagree, but only God knows how much he held back his punches and attempt to just stand up and left. But he reasoned that nothing bad could come from finishing out the date and then cry about his shattered dreams for weeks.

Finally, after what seems like forever, Junmyeon does not hesitate to leave immediately after paying the bill. He didn’t even bother to say goodbye. He’s tired, and he just wanted to go home.

He held his tears back as best as he could before pressing the elevator ‘down’ button, not wanting to make fool out of himself in public and definitely not in front of this tall, handsome stranger who was ‘conveniently’ waiting for the elevator as well.

Moments later, the elevator chimed, and they both entered. The ride going down was mostly uneventful with Junmyeon fidgeting and still trying to hold back his tears and the stranger leaning back against the walls, staring blankly at the numbers displayed on the screen as the ride goes down.

“It’s okay to cry. He was a jerk anyway,” the stranger muttered, breaking the tense awkward silence between the two of them.

“Huh?”

“Your date. He was an asshole,” said the stranger again with an amused grin on his face. “Cocky bastard.”

The lump in his throat urging him to cry is suddenly gone and Junmyeon just couldn’t help it but to chuckle. A cocky bastard for sure, and yet Junmyeon is dumb enough to even fall for a guy like him. “Yeah. Yeah, he was. Thank you.”

The stranger merely shrugged, ‘no problem’, Junmyeon assumed.

There was silence all over again. But this time, it was some sort of a comfortable silence. The elevator descending felt like forever, but somewhere in Junmyeon’s heart, he didn’t even mind it. Not in the slightest bit.

Junmyeon stole a quick glance; enough to note that the stranger is obviously tall with broad shoulders, hair slicked back with invitingly warm brown eyes, and is probably somewhere close around his age. Something about him seems familiar, a tad bit too familiar.

“I’ve tried telling you that he’s a jerk, but nothing could change your mind huh?” said the stranger; presumably not, breaking the silence all over again which caught Junmyeon off guard.

“Excuse me?”

“Look, what I’m trying to say is-”

“Do I know you from somewhere?”

“You’re an insufferable idiot, Junmyeon.”

With that, Junmyeon had to take a moment to process his thoughts. He couldn’t recall if they ever met, or if they know each other. But one thing for sure is that this man right here for sure is familiar. As someone who is deeply invested in his work and didn’t have that much of human interaction, Junmyeon just couldn’t point out exactly who.

“It’s Sehun...” the stranger, Sehun groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Well, you look different! How am I supposed to know? You never show up this nice at work.” Huffed Junmyeon, crossing his arms to his chest, defending himself.

“I had a date, dumbass.”

“And how did it go?”

“I guess you were too far up in your rose-tinted world that you didn’t notice I was right behind you. It went horribly as well.”

“Oh...”

“Yeah...”

Another minute of silence. The elevator dinged, letting them off on the floor. Neither of them seems to want to take the first step to leave.

Just as when Junmyeon was about to step off the elevator, Sehun managed to grab the latter by his hand.

“Hey, uhm-” Sehun hesitated for a moment, a slight croak in his voice can be heard as Junmyeon notices the faint tint of red on the younger male’s cheek. “Since we both had horrible dates today. What if we- I mean, if you don’t mind- For starters, at least I’m not a jerk.” He blushed, looking everywhere except for Junmyeon’s eyes.

If anything, Junmyeon’s whole face flaring up bright red doesn’t seem to help at all. They were both too smitten to respond and Junmyeon’s heart was racing, fast.

“I’m sorry, maybe that’s a bad idea-”

“No, it’s not.” Junmyeon said shyly, “And you better get out of there before the elevator door is going to squish my arm.”

Sehun didn’t even hesitate no more and grinned, quickly rushing out of the elevator and tugs the latter along with him, heart blooming of flowers, stars, and sunshine as he finally asked the man of his dreams of three years to a date. Coincidence may have claimed that this is just a synchrony, but Fate definitely has decided that this was meant to be.
