I love you Brother [Oneshot]

Summary:

Sapnap wakes up in one stormy night seeing a message on his communicator but ignoring it, now he is left to imagine what could have been but soon enough he is brought back to reality, not ready to face what had happened.

Work Text:

Sapnap was woken up by the beeping of the communicator. He sits up, his eyes falling on the empty place next to him. Place where his fiancées should have been but it had been empty for days if not weeks now. “Come on Sapnap, you need to read it.” A familiar voice spoke up behind him. “What if I don’t…” Moonlight hit the communicator, it was the only source of light in the room.  “But you did.” Sapnap played nervously with his shirt. “But If I don’t it’s…kind of like it never happened.” He just noticed how cold the room is, or maybe it is just that he was born in the nether. “If I don’t…it means you are still here…” He did not dare to look behind him where the figure stood. “It means everything is still normal.” He swallowed, biting his lip to stop the tears.  “Not ready to face the truth…?” That voice almost mocked him; he knew it couldn’t be real this was his mind playing tricks on him again. “Not at all…” The wind hit the windows, storm, just like that night. “Fine, stay in the bubble for a little while.”

If that night never happened…huh…

“I refuse, Gogy needs to be a flower girl.” Quackity stated crossing his arms, leaning further into the chair, Karl giggled. “Noone is disagreeing with you Q.” They burst out laughing, Sapnap felt extremely happy and warm, this was perfect. “Wedding is tomorrow and he already claimed the role so I don’t think you need to state your opinion like we are disagreeing.” He wrapped his arms around Karl from behind, snuggling his head to his neck watching his other blushing fiancé. “Well-I just stated my opinion.” The raven-haired man stood up and joined the cuddle.  Sapnap really couldn’t be happier, he cuddled up to his loved ones and closed his eyes. “I love you two but we need to go to bed, we have a wedding tomorrow.”  Quackity nodded. “True, true I need my beauty sleep.” Karl looked at the short one of them and grin. “True, you really do need it.” Two of them started to walk towards their bedroom. “WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?!” Sapnap chuckled and stayed behind, after some more bickering Karl turned around. “You are not joining us?” He shook his head. “In a minute I need to grab a word with my best man.” He smiled and took Qs hand, walking towards their bedroom.

He waited for them to be in the bedroom and walked out of the front door, a smile painted on his lips. He softly hummed as the night sky. “Hmm, you look really happy Pandas.” Immediately he grinned as he saw the green hoodie, sitting on top of the tree. “Hi Dream, I see we had the same intention before bed.” Dream helped him on top of the tree and they sat together. “You know I don’t sleep, but why do you want to speak with me? Getting cold feet?” He knew his best friend was smirking under the mask. “NO! I just wanted to see you idiot and take off that thing, no one but us is here.” Dream took off his hood and unclipped the mask. His pale skin was decorated with freckles, and one old scar on his nose which he gained when he fought against Technoblade.

He almost forgot how beautiful, how human he looked. Pale skin, freckles, soft blond hair, piercing green eyes.

“So why did you want to talk?” Sapnap smiled at him, studying Dream’s facial expressions. “No reason just wanted to spend some time with you, after the Lmanberg fiasco we didn’t have much time to just hang out.” Dream had a ton of work to do after they made an agreement with the country to just stay peaceful with one another. “Yeah, I am not really fond of it as I still think it is dividing our server but it is not worth it, they will do anything in their power to prove that I am the bad guy and that they deserve their country.” Dream sighed and fall backward on the leaves looking at the night sky. “They really are not worth it; do you have a suit for tomorrow?” Sapnap followed his friend and layed down on the leaves. “Of course, mom didn’t let me no other choice.” Sapnap snorted. “Mom? You and puffy really had gotten close.” He could see his friend’s face redden. “Y-yeah…well-well Its…complicated…” The shorter man laughed out loud. “Hey, I am not judging, it is just strange you calling Puffy mom. But I am happy for you, wait if Puffy is your adoptive mom, basically, what is Niki to you?” His friend sighed. “I don’t know, haven’t thought of that. I call Foolish brother and he calls me brother too…so…”

Sapnap sat up dramatically. “What! I thought I am your brother!” Blond laughed. “You are my brother! But in a different way.” He smiled, looking up at Sapnap. “And you are one to talk about my relationships. You have a wedding tomorrow!”

“Yeah, true, true. I am so excited man.” Dream chuckled; light breeze hit them and Sapnap shook, he had a low tolerance for cold weather. Dream took off his hoodie and handed it to his blaze friend. “Dream you will catch a cold.” Dream layed back down, hands behind his head, now in only a black turtleneck. “No way, I am not you, I have some tolerance for cold and it isn’t even cold outside!”Sapnap glared at him. “I will tell your MOM about this.” And with that Dream kicked him playfully in the leg. “Ouch! you idiot!” They laughed together. They stayed near each other for like an hour just chatting and enjoying one another finally in peace.

Dream walked him back to the house and took his hoodie back. “Dream where do you even live now? Dream are you homeless?” Blond groaned. “NOT YOU TOO! NO! I live with mom now, she insisted on it so we can continue the therapy as effectively as possible you know.”

“Soooo, you live with your mom as a 21-year-old? Man that’s…that is so lame, never guessed you for a mama bo-” Dream kicked him again and Sapnap just laughed and surrendered, leaving his friend to get to the warm bed with his two fiancées who were already in deep sleep. Sapnap was right, he really could not be happier.

After the ceremony George, Dream and Sapnap met up outside of the church, joking together. “Now we need the biggest party possible!” George screamed on top of his lungs and the SMP cheered obviously agreeing to lead the newlyweds to the Lmanberg where Quackity arranged a party beforehand. After dancing and eating and drinking, cutting a cake, laughing. Quackity stood on the table. “LET’S PLAY A GAME!” Sapnap chuckled at his husband. “I agree, but what game?”

“Top ways for us to die?” Sapnap froze, what? But people agreed…for some reason, they still seemed happy. Like if that wasn’t a weird “game” to play at a wedding party. Karl spoke up. “Lost in madness as I even forget who I am I will die as I fall off of the cliff!” Everyone laughed except for Sapnap who was horrified. “Wha-”

“Pierced by the sword!” Wilbur said on top of his lungs.

“Heart attack on my own birthday!” Jschlatt said, again laughing with everyone.

“Beaten to death with a potato just to be brought back!” Sapnap couldn’t breathe, what is happening, why is everyone saying it so calmly? Like if this wasn’t disturbing…Everyone continued to talk about the “best way for them to die.” He ignored them, or at least he tried, he tried until it was Dreams time. “Bleed out in small cell after months of physical and mental torture!” Sapnap gasped for air. “No…”

“If only I had made better choices.”

“STOOOOOOOP!” He screamed as all faces, he used to recognize vanished. He was back in his empty room; Karl prime knows where and Quackity the same. Storm raging outside and communicator on the shelf waiting for him to read the message. “It’s time to face it.” He finally looked at the figure its Dream, the one he knew before. “Why! WHY DID YOU DO IT! WE COULD HAVE BEEN HAPPY ALL OF US!” He stood up and threw a picture frame on the figure but went through it, shattering it on the wall. Out of frustration, he took more things and all of them were thrown on the figure who did not even flinch. “WHY! WHY DREAM! WHY WEREN’T WE ENOUGH! Why weren’t we enough for you to stay…” He fell on his knees surrounded by the broken pieces of things he had thrown. “Why can’t I hate you…I want to hate you…”

“Do you really?” The figure stayed not moving, it wasn’t a ghost it was his imagination playing tricks on him. “I should hate you…after all, you had done; we could have been happy! You with Puffy and Foolish…Just tell me why Dream…” He cried, begging the figure. “I can’t, I am not him, I am your imagination. I have no idea what Dream wanted or planned.”

“So…you are truly gone…? I am alone…”

“I am gone Sapnap, but I live in what you do, till you won’t forget me I will be forever alive.”

“I can’t do this alone…”

“Look around Sapnap, you did so much without me, you don’t need me.”

“Maybe I don’t need you! But I still want you here! Just stay with me…”

“You know I cannot do that…”

“I didn’t even get to say goodbye…”

“Sometimes, we don’t get to say goodbye.”

“I can’t do this…not without you and George…”

Suddenly he was alone, in a messy room, blinking communicator now in his hands, he opened the message that would forever haunt him.

<Dream was slain by Quackity using Wardens Will>

He was alone, crying on the ground, tossing the device far from him, screen shattering yet still glowing. He curled up, crying, not even caring just how cold he is. He promised to kill him and yet his death was too painful to bear, it doesn’t matter who he had become, he mourned the friend he used to be. A man he wishes he could be again, a playful dork with such stupid dry humor he loved. He wants to steal his hoodie when he is cold, he wants to play games again. Yet he knows he will never get a chance to do any of these things. He is gone and he never got the chance to get his answers nor did he get to say his final goodbye.

The worst was he knew almost no one will grieve him, that there will be a celebration, celebrating that his friend had died. Maybe death was what Dream deserved, in some terrible way, maybe he is finally free from whatever made him change so much. He hoped, he prayed that he is somewhere safe, that he is happy.  He knew just what they had done to Schlatts grave and he knew the same fate would follow Dream if he even got a grave…

He knew pain will never truly leave him, and he knows he will never get closure with Dream. The storm raged outside, mirroring the storm inside him, and yet he calmly stood up and sat on the window still, watching it rage, ignoring the nonstop beeping of his communicator. Even if this must have been his imagination, he swore he felt his arms around him one last time before he moved on from here, from the place he created to find a family, from the place which drove him to madness. Sapnap will never be the same without him by his side but he knew no matter what he will do now, it won’t change that he is gone. So, he muttered his last words to him, wishing Dream got to hear them.

“I love you Dream…I love you, brother…”
