Work Text:
While the life of a kindergarten teacher may seem to be fairly easy, there are some flaws and inconsistencies to that belief. First of all, dealing with kids (their crying, their mess, their fights, etc) while dealing with very annoying colleagues (Gojo), certainly does not make her job seem like a walk in the park as one would normally envision. Not to mention, there are times where you may also find yourself subject to a number of strange events like the one Potato class' homeroom teacher Utahime-sensei is facing right now. And this event has something to do with one toddler named Itadori Yuuji.
Now, the issue at hand is not by nature a notorious one. In fact, Yuuji is not actually a problem child. The kid is very friendly and can be seen to get along with all the kindergarten kids (some of his notable achievements are 1) managing to befriend the ever-chaotic Nobara, 2) managing to communicate with the grumpy kid Megumi, and 3) being the only one who could get the shy Junpei to talk, 4) being the only one who gets along with the rambunctious kid Aoi). He is also the first kid to greet her 'good morning' in class and bid her 'goodbye' when it's time to go home.
During class, Yuuji always volunteers first for games and is able to convince everyone to participate (she still doesn't know how he was able to convince demon spawn Sukuna to join playhouse but hey, she's not complaining). Bottom line, having Yuuji as a student is making her job AND life a lot easier.
Not to mention, the kid is adorable as hell. She's willing to bet that her co-workers Gojo and Nanami have fallen in love with the pink-haired angel.
So what is the issue with Yuuji? The issue has something to do with the kids' naptime, specifically what happens during said kids' naptime. Although the homeroom teacher situates the kids into their separate makeshift beds for naptime before she leaves the room to have time for herself (and to check on her beloved Shoko), Utahime-sensei finds Yuuji dozing off at Megumi's despite remembering placing both kids on their separate places prior whenever she comes back to check up on the kids.
At first, she thought that Yuuji must have woken up and decided that it's lonely so he lies down next to his best friend. However, when Utahime asked Yuuji about this odd matter, the kid denied the action. "Utahime-sensei, Yuuji does not remember going to Gumi's bed", the kid replied cutely while holding his weird looking (dozing?) teddy bear during playtime.
"That's weird", she thought. After all, it's not like Yuuji to lie. "Oh well", Utahime said to herself. "I guess it's not really an issue. It's not like it'll happen again"
But it did happen again. Every single naptime, Utahime always finds herself a witness to the same occurrence of Yuuji sleeping in Megumi's makeshift bed despite sleeping on his own spot initially. No matter how far she separates the two, the endgame is always the same. It's also bothering that Yuuji has no memory of ever moving places. It's a good thing that Megumi does not seem to mind his (unexpected) bedmate.
Which brings us to the situation at hand. Maybe it's the boredom or Utahime's natural curiosity, but the homeroom teacher finds herself hiding and peeking through the space provided by the hinge in the classroom door. Her colleagues may call her crazy but damn, she has to know if there is some unknown entity moving her kid to Megumi's spot. Time seems to move slowly as the homeroom teacher waits for any signs of suspicious movement. Moments passed and much to Utahime's dismay (or relief?), there seems to be nothing out of the ordinary.
Before Utahime could call off her little 'investigation' off for another day or chalk it all off as mere overreaction, she notices a small movement from the room. From the gap through the door, Utahime could see Megumi standing up and walking over to where Yuuji is napping. He looks around the classroom (Utahime suspects that he must be checking if there are people seeing him) and it is only when the kid decides that the coast is clear does he direct his attention back on his sleeping friend.
Megumi stares at Yuuji for a few seconds and Utahime is worried that he may wake up the dozing pinkette when the unthinkable happened. With incredible strength for a kid, Megumi carries Yuuji bridal style, walks over his spot and situates Yuuji and himself into his makeshift bed. After carefully covering both of their bodies with his blanket, Megumi closes his eyes and dozes off like he hasn't done anything out of the ordinary (like literally manhandling his bestfriend to sleep beside him).
She tells her discovery to her co-workers who merely reply that they're not surprised at the kid's odd behaviour. "Megumi is possessive as hell, Utahime!" the white-haired menace Gojo supplies. "He glares at me whenever I come over to see Yuuji".
"Pretty sure he's glaring at your creepy ass, Gojo-san." Nanami adds. "But, I too notice that the kid is enamored with Itadori-kun".
After the conversation with her colleagues, Utahime finds herself observing the Zenin kid. She notices how Megumi only shares his dog shaped biscuits and ginger-filled lunch with Yuuji, even insisting to feed the pink haired toddler. During dismissal, she also sees Megumi waiting for Yuuji finish saying goodbyes to everyone before snatching up Yuuji's hand. Megumi also only allows Yuuji to play with his hair during breaks.
She also feels shivers whenever she separates the two during playtime. It was especially worse when Utahime decided to play playhouse and cast Yuuji and Junpei as the elderly couple (Junpei wouldn't participate if Yuuji is not his partner). However, this seems to backfire for both teacher and the shy kid when the supposedly friendly pet dog (Megumi) keeps glaring at the neighbor (Utahime) and the grandfather (Junpei).
"Damn, Megumi get into character", Utahime chided internally.
Poor Junpei finds himself shaking throughout the accursed playtime and resorted to gripping Yuuji's hand to feel less nervous which only made the glaring much worse, scaring most of the players. (Don't judge her, the Zenin kid has a mean glare). The only one oblivious to this whole trial is the vibrant sunshine of a kid who played his role well and acted lovey-dovey to his partner Junpei. "Oh god". the teacher internally groaned. "Curse my curious ass." She's now 110 percent sure the brooding kid is now plotting her death and she's certain that being 'killed by a kid' is not a good look on her gravestone. Not like anyone would believe that.
Overall, the teacher has concluded that the kid is indeed possessive as hell over Yuuji. Which honestly explains why the Zenin kid feels the need to go through all the trouble of carrying the oblivious pinkette in his spot during naptime. Utahime-sensei also decided to not separate the two anymore in hopes of appeasing the feral toddler. In fact, she now lets Megumi choose his partner first in games (he always chooses Yuuji much to the dismay of Junpei, Nobara, Aoi, and Sukuna). And yeah, things are getting much better--the atmosphere of the classroom has gotten lighter and she does not feel like she's constantly on thin ice. In fact, Megumi even bids her goodbye one day, before he rushes over to his energetic best friend.
"What a weird kid." Utahime thinks. "But yeah, I'm rooting for you Megumi."
And nope. She definitely didn't cry at their wedding (okay maybe she did. Just a little bit.) Her vision goes blurry when she sees Megumi carrying Yuuji the same way he did when they were kids. The only difference this time is that everyone is there to hear the the delighted laugh Yuuji directs at his new husband. She also does not miss the small smile Megumi shoots at Yuuji, the same familiar smile Utahime has seen years ago as their teacher whenever Megumi stares and talks to Yuuji. "Damn Megumi, whipped since day one." Utahime fondly thinks. "Congratulations to both of you".
Things could have been perfect without the constant wails of a white haired menace mourning how he lost to a emotionless brat.
Needless to say, both Utahime and Nanami dragged the adult-sized menace that is Gojo throwing a tantrum outside in order to restore peace at the wedding.
