Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

When I first started seeing cursed spirits, my parents brushed it off as my imagination. No matter how many times I told them they didn’t listen until I told them a cursed spirit had caused a car accident that happened in the countryside. My description of the curse and how the car ended up the way it did scared them. That’s when my parents' concern grew and they had no idea what to do. They took me to see a therapist in hopes to stop me from seeing these things, but to no avail. Then one day I came across Masamichi Yaga. He was exorcising a cursed spirit in an alleyway (my parents grounded me when I wandered away from them). He was someone who could help me and my parents were relieved. He explained how rare it was for someone not in one of the clans to be born with the gift of seeing spirits. So I started on the path of being a Jujustu sorcerer.  I was nervous to be learning about cursed spirits and honing in on my cursed technique. But once I did get the hang of my cursed technique I wasn’t scared of the cursed spirits anymore. It was exciting that I got to help people who couldn’t see these creatures.

While attending Jujustu High, I met Satoru Gojo and Kento Nanami. They were the two closest friends I had at that school. When I first met Satoru I was drawn to him because of his carefree personality and of course he was handsome. Though the more time I spent with him, the more I realized there was more to him than meets the eye. And my crush on him only grew.

Since attending Jujustu High  I was always learning and improving my cursed techniques. There was always something exciting around the corner; I felt like my life was great and I had a purpose in life.

Of course that was until the day my parents died. Leaving my younger sister and I, orphans.

I was sent off to deal with two cursed spirits on the outskirts of Tokyo along with Gojo and Nanami. My parents had gone off to visit my aunt and uncle in Kyoto with my younger sister, Katsumi.

The three of us tracked down the spirits to an old school house. There was a grade 2 and grade 3 spirit, Gojo and Nanami ended up fighting the grade 2, leaving the grade 3 to me. The spirit seemed easy enough to beat, until it took my parents’ car hostage. The spirit probably would have taken any car hostage but it didn’t change the fact that my parents’ were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I stood there frozen.   There really wasn’t a way for me to save them without the possibility of one of us dying. So I did the only thing I could think of. I offered myself.

“Nakamura what are you doing?!” I heard Gojo scream/yell.

“I’m saving my parents.” I replied as I took a step forward.

The next few moments happened so fast I didn’t have time to process it until after the spirit had been dealt with. It threw my parents’ car as I took another step forward. Nanami grabbed me out of harm’s warwhile Gojo took care of it.

It was my fault that my parents couldn’t be saved.

Neither of the boys would let me go and see if my parents were alright, and if Katsumi was in the car with them. I later found out that Katsumi was still at my aunt and uncle’s while my parents were going back home for a date night.

There was no way that my parents could have survived the crash, leaving my aunt and uncle to be our guardians. Katsumi was too young to understand why our parents were never coming back. She would often cry and I was upset because even though I visited her as much as I could, I couldn’t be there with her in Kyoto all the time.

It was a free weekend for me so I took the opportunity to travel to Kyoto to visit Katsumi. Satoru decided to join me to buy himself some sweets. He had a big sweet tooth, almost as much as Katsumi.

“Ren! Satoru!” Katsumi exclaimed as she saw the both of us walk up to my aunt and uncle’s house.

“Hey Kat, I missed you.” I hugged her. Katsumi went over to hug Satoru and I couldn’t help but notice that he gave her a few candies. I turned to see my aunt with a concerned look on her face,

“We need to talk.” She spoke.

“Sure. Katsumi, why don’t you talk to Satoru about what you’ve been learning in school” I smiled back at her before following my aunt inside.

My uncle was sitting at the kitchen table with a frown on his face. I felt the knot in my stomach grow as neither of them looked this concerned since the day they found out our parents died.

“It’s Katsumi.” My aunt frowned.

“What’s wrong with her?”
“At first we thought it was nothing but her imagination, but then she started saying that she was seeing these monsters more and more often. ” My aunt paused, “She hasn’t stopped talking about these evil things she sees and we think that she can do what you can do.”
“You guys should have told me when she first started seeing the cursed spirits.” I frowned. Katsumi was just like me and I was extremely anxious because I didn’t want to lose her to a curse spirit like our parents. Being a Sorcerer wasn’t as easy as I had first thought it would be.

“I know that you would get worried and that wasn’t going to help you while you were on your missions. I knew it was better to tell you when you were coming to visit.” My aunt replied

I looked out the window.  Satoru was looking down at my younger sister with an interested expression. He looked up and made eye contact with me. Katsumi must have told him about the monsters she was seeing. I turned back around to look at my aunt and uncle,

“After I finish this year in Tokyo, I’ll transfer to the Kyoto school so I’m closer to Katsumi. I’ll get a job as a teacher and look after her when I get my own place.” I told them.

“Are you sure, Ren?” My uncle asked.

“She’s my sister, I’d do anything for her. I’ll talk to the principal and start the process.” I told them.

“Ren, are you going to come and have a tea party with me and Satoru?” Katsumi called as she came running in.

“Yeah, I’ll come. I’m just going to finish talking to aunt and uncle.” I smiled.

“Don’t take too long. I’m not saving you a seat.” Satoru smiled before running off with Katsumi.

“How do you think your boyfriend will feel about you moving?” My aunt asked.

“Satoru isn’t my boyfriend.” I felt my cheeks heat up. “I’m sure he’ll come visit and we’ll probably still see each other.” I shrugged.

“Will Katsumi be okay until she can attend?” My uncle asked.

“Yeah, just make sure that she stays inside more. You guys can’t see the cursed spirits so you can’t really protect her from them. When I move back I’ll make sure to be the one to take her out when I can.” I told them. The two of them nodded before I went to join the tea party with Kat and Satoru.

On the train ride home Satoru and I talked about Katsumi seeing the cursed spirits. I told him about my plan and he sounded kind of disappointed that I was going to move. Of course he said he would message me whenever he could.

.oOo.

Katsumi’s POV

When my parents died, my aunt Maki and Uncle Rin became my guardians. I don’t remember my parents since I was too young, but Ren told me about them whenever I asked. She would come visit when she could because she was at a ‘boarding school’. When I was older she told me that she went to a special school that would fight the things that I could see.

It was finally the day my sister would be moving in with our Aunt Maki and Uncle Rin. I was so excited that I would get to see her all the time, but I was kinda sad that I couldn’t see Satoru anymore. He always gave me sweets even when Ren said no.

I was sitting by the window waiting for her to arrive. I wanted to be the first to greet her. My aunt tried to pull me away from the window but I wouldn't move. As soon as I saw Ren walking up, I ran outside and hugged her.

“You almost knocked me over.” Ren chuckled.

“Sorry, I’m just so happy that you’ll be back home!” I pulled away to look up at her face.

“It’s okay. I have to talk to you about my school once I get settled in.”

“I can help you unpack.” I pulled away.

“Sounds like a plan. Come on.” Ren wrapped her arm around my shoulder as we walked inside.

Ren greeted our aunt and uncle before we went upstairs to her room. I helped her put away her clothes and decorated her room with the little trinkets she had.

“So what did you want to talk about?” I asked her.

“You know those things you’ve been seeing?” She paused as I nodded, “Those are cursed spirits. Jujustu Sorcerers are the ones who exercise those spirits because they’re bad and hurt people.” She explained.

“So I’m a sorcerer?”
“Not yet. You need to train and perfect your cursed technique. Where I go to school is where we can learn about the different types and improve our cursed techniques.” Ren watched me as I was processing the information.

“So you and Satoru are sorcerers?” I asked. Ren nodded, “So when do I go there?”
“After middle school. I’ll be staying at the school in Kyoto but I’ll always come over after and stay on the weekends.” Ren patted my head. I stared her for a few moments as she started to put away some of her shirts.

“Is Satoru going to visit?”

“When he can.” Ren went to a different bag of luggage and pulled out a little bag of sweets, “These are for you.”

I looked at the little note attached to it,

‘From your favorite person ever :)

Satoru’

It made me giggle since he was constantly bribing me to like him more than my sister. I knew he was just doing it for fun and to get a reaction from my sister. I had hoped that he would come visit soon, I loved it when they would play with me.

As the years went on, Ren became more responsible than she used to be. I knew it was to take care of me but she always seemed a little down. Ren told me it wasn’t because of me and I knew she was telling the truth. She seemed happier when Satoru came to visit and it made me wonder if she liked him more than a friend. So one day I decided to ask her.

I was sitting in the living room as my sister was cleaning the kitchen. She was humming and I had a feeling it was because Satoru was going to drop by.
“Ren, can I ask you something?” I turned to look at her.

“Of course.”

“Do you have a crush on Satoru?” I asked her. Ren immediately looked over at me.

“Why would you ask that?” She tried her best to sound nonchalant.

“You always seem to be in a good mood whenever he comes to visit. I mean, at first I thought it was because you don’t see your best friend as much as you used to. Then I realized that you’re like this everytime and have a silly grin on your face when he sends you a text later in the evening. So I’m thinking you have a crush on him” I shrugged.

“You’re twelve, how the hell did you come up with this idea?” Ren’s eyes went wide with shock before she quickly turned her back to put away the glasses.

“I watch too many romance movies and I know what it’s like to have a crush.” I answered

“Do you have a crush on a boy?” Ren tried to change the subject.

“Ren, you can tell me. I’m not going to tell Satoru about your crush.” I watched as Ren turned back around to look at me.

“Yeah I have a crush on him. Ever since we became best friends.” She confessed, “So who’s this boy you like?”

“Just some upperclassmen. He plays basketball for the middle school team.” I told her.

There was a knock at the door, and my sister walked over to open it. Satoru was on the other side with a paper bag in his hand. I got up off of the couch to greet him,

“Hey Satoru.” Ren spoke.

“That’s all you have to say? Hey Satoru. I thought you would be a little more excited to see me. After I came all this way.” Satoru pouted.

“You’re so dramatic.” Ren walked off into the kitchen.

“Hi Satoru!” I beamed.

“I brought you some of my favorite sweets!” Satoru came over to give me a hug.

“If she gets any cavities you're paying for the dentist bill.” Ren spoke.

“She hasn’t gotten any yet. I’m surprised you haven’t since I’ve been so sweet to you.” Satoru gave my sister a flirty smile. I giggled

“More like a headache.” Ren rolled her eyes.

“If you can stay for a while, can we play a boardgame?” I asked Satoru.

“Anything for you Katsumi.” Satoru ruffled my hair before he plopped down on the couch.

The three of us ended up playing Sorry and Clue. It was a lot of fun and I won at Sorry. Watching my sister laugh and smile when Satoru was around made me happy. Maybe they would actually get together; they were complete opposites. Like the saying goes ‘opposites attract’.

A year later Satoru started to come around less and less. Ren had said that the both of them were very busy going on missions and everything. Sometimes Ren would come back needing to rest for a few days because of her injuries. So the two lost touch but I had always hoped that maybe one day we would see Satoru again and he’d make Ren smile once more.
