Message from the Past

Summary:

While journeying with Link has always been a rather fun and peaceful affair- monsters aside- it's going to the Divine Beasts that give Ethel a heart-stopping moment of pause.

Work Text:

“…Do you hear that?” Link stopped in his tracks, looking back to Ethel. They had stopped only a few steps into the Divine Beast, listening intently to the ominous beeping and creaking of the massive machine. Faint noises of mechanical workings...and yet, their eyes were wide and stared up at the ceiling in worry. What were they going on about?

Upon noticing his confused expression and tilted head, Ethel continued, “Th-That beeping… Listen closely.” So he did, the Hylian straining his pointed ears to discordant noise. Beeping, they said…? What sort of beeping? Should he be hearing some-

And it hit. Quietly, among the sound of technology… A series of beeps. A few of them drawn out…… Pattern-like. Like a code.

His blues met their horrified, shining purple ones. Horror written all over their face. He couldn’t close his mouth. Couldn’t find the strength…

“Do you…? Is that……?” His mouth clamped shut, turning his head back to the arching cavern of the Divine Beast. Occasionally….a faint echo of an SOS sounding through. The last remnants of an era long gone. Of friends….who had met a likely grisly demise. It made him swallow, unnerved by the thought.

However... They could avenge their death. Bring justice to their sacrifice and find people to carry on their legacy. Link- in soft, quiet tones- told Ethel as much.

It did not stop their tears from falling. It was like his words couldn't register, even for their sharp, Hylian ears.

“I….I’m so sorry,” they whispered to the stale, quiet air. “I’m so, so sorry…” All they got for a reply, was those distant, desperate messages…

Notes:

Honestly, writing for LoZ is constantly writing for self-indulgence...and y'know what. It works out! I always have fun with these!

...Also, having to hear the SOS call from the Divine Beasts was a heart-shattering moment for me, and I wanted to reflect that with this piece.
