Work Text:
“You wanna do something fun?”
You held back the need to jump out of your chair and more importantly, scream since you were in your room, completely concentrated on homework until Danny decided–of all times!—to phase through your walls and scare the living sh–
“What happened to knocking?” you hissed while glancing at your partially opened door, almost expecting any one of your family members to barge in, “What if my family was in here?”
His unblinking eyes didn’t hold the same worry as yours; meanwhile, the grin on his face showed he didn’t have an ounce of it. “You didn’t answer my question.”
“Danny,” you warned. Your lips turned down in a scowl while you glared at him. You had made a habit of crossing your arms recently when you weren’t too happy with Danny’s actions. Your impatience and tolerance grew thin when you would tap your point finger against your arm when crossing them as well.
“Relax,” he chuckled, “I just saw your parents leave.” His gloved thumb shot out behind him, indicating the direction he came from. His smile never leaves his face and deceives his hidden intentions.
You sighed out in frustration. It’s ever a wonder how Danny flew around carelessly without everyone finding out his identity, let alone your family finding out. It didn’t include the amount of times he almost transformed in front of someone or out in the open and others he let it slip about his second life.
“So…” he grinned more as he repeated himself. He leaned in slightly almost like he wanted to tell you a secret. Every centimeter in doing so, your eyes would narrow more into a glare. “Wanna do something fun?”
“No,” you answered without hesitation as you went back to your math homework. Unfortunately, you didn’t think you would be able to focus like you were before since Danny completely pulled you out of the zone. Still, you tried to trace back a little to see what exactly you were solving for. You didn’t manage to go far with Danny whining behind you.
“Come on,” he complained, “You don’t even know what I had in mind.”
“Danny,” you started, “when it comes to you being in your ghost form and having fun, you usually want to prank people, and when I mean people—it’s usually Dash. So, no, I’m not going to help you prank Dash.”
“God damn it,” you swore.
During the whole time you were protesting, you were hoping Danny would give up on his endeavors, but after pouting a bit, he shrugged and bragged about what his plan was anyways. He probably took off, knowing you were going to follow him to attempt him to stop. You followed him through the park and into the halls of the high school, only to stop when you rounded the corner and almost crashed into the most annoying person in all of Casper High, Dash.
“Oh, hey,” Dash smirked. He regained his composure from being mildly surprised that he managed to come across you. “School got out a while ago. I wouldn’t think I would get the chance to see you again today.”
“What a coincidence,” you mentally groaned, “neither did I.” It wasn’t until now when it clicked. The giggling echoed slightly down the hall where Danny was hiding behind a corner, holding in his laughter and only confirming what you thought he had planned. You panicked, not wanting to know exactly what he had in mind. “Oh, you know, since it’s so late, I think I’ll just be on my way home then.”
Your quick pivot and steps weren’t fast enough for Dash’s athletic abilities. Despite you turning into a complete one-eighty, he stepped into your path and blocked it while he leaned onto the closest wall as if he didn’t rush to stepping in front of you. “What’s the rush? Now that you’re here and I just finished practice, how about we spend some time together and get to know one another?”
You wracked your brain for any good excuses on the spot. “I can’t since I have so much homework to do. You know me, can’t seem to get my nose out of a book.”
“Well, maybe, instead of reading wonders of the world, how about I show it to you?”
No, thanks, I’ll just stick with the books, you thought. You already had Phantom doing that whenever you had to fight ghosts. You lost count with the amount of times on your fingers alone whenever a ghost would swoop you off your feet and drop you from a horrendous height. You would never get used to it, not even with the reassurance of Danny catching you every time. You liked the world from the ground's view, not the falling bird’s point of view. Books didn’t seem so boring with that thought in mind.
Before you could just dismiss Dash completely, a floating water bucket had dumped itself onto Dash’s whole being. You were so close, yet a single drop hadn’t got on you. Only when you looked down at your hands having a translucent effect on them did you realize Danny must have turned you intangible. Once the water had stopped splashing, your body turned back to normal. The stench had finally reached your nostrils once the water had a second to settle into the jock’s clothes. “Oh God, what is that awful smell?” you not-so-secretly covered your nose and even pinched any airways in case the smell still leaked into them. You sounded like a kazoo as your nostrils were covered and blocked when you mumbled, “What was that, sewage water?”
“In fact, that was,” you heard a very familiar voice echo silently right next to you, “courtesy of Dash’s after practice hygiene.”
“Gross!” you exclaimed out loud on impulse. You wondered how in the world Dash was able to attract so many girls when he sweats like he went dumpster diving in a very old alleyway. It doesn’t even smell like he uses even a bit of soap to wash it all away. Does he…just use water? The thought of his low maintenance made you want to gag. The smell didn’t help with the nauseating feeling of needing to throw up today’s lunch.
The whole time you were trying to hold your bile back, Dash was freaking out about where the water even came from, not the smell at all. His hair dripped in from of his panicked eyes. “Where did that bucket come from? And no one else is here!” he repeated the same phrases over and over again, not comprehending the possibility of a ghost bullying him despite the numerous occasions of come across some of them. His attention went back to you when you took a few steps away from him, still holding your nose. You saw his nostrils flare and heard him take a big whiff of what you were smelling. Instead of doing the normal thing to cover his nose, he looked down to scream. You flinched slightly when he did, wondering what’s so scary about the awful smell. Wait, actually…it was for his case. “My clothes! It’s all over my clothes!” You would have actually felt bad if it weren’t for the fact Danny had told you that Dash had a closet full of the same clothes that he wears everyday, so one set isn’t going to kill him. You didn’t know whether to ask Danny how he knew that fact and you didn’t know whether or not you would want to know.
You heard something move again before another bucket had been tipped over to dump mud over his head. The mess being nowhere near you since you’ve taken your steps back. Dash had screamed again. Oddly enough, there were small patches of grass sticking to the mud. Some of it was painted, probably from the football field itself. He was hunched over and his eyes were closed tightly until he no longer felt anything else being piled on. He wiped any mud over his eyes to open them and looked over to his shoulders in time for some worms to wiggle out of the mud. His third and final scream was way more high pitched than before as he ran out of the hallway and towards outside. You had covered your ears from it until he was completely outside. Even as the door closed behind him, it wasn’t completely silent as Danny’s burst of laughter echoed the hallway. You glared at the floating figure as he became visible.
“That was so not fun.”
“Aw, come on, I was giving him a mud bath.”
