Chapter Text
You don't have to win the lotto
I want you to win my heart
She said I just want someone true
---
“Damn Lexi, you fucking fearless.”
No, it was more like "Damn Lexi, you fucking stupid."
She can’t remember the last time she felt more embarrassed than last night.
After that showdown with Nate Jacob’s dad, Fez came back pissed off. Giving a stoic glance her way, silent as he quickly brushed past her into the back storage room.
After waiting a few minutes feeling embarrassed and scared shitless, she hightailed it out of the convenience store on her bike back home.
She was an over-analyzer. She knew it was too good to be true. From the moment she saw the blonde, she knew she was in over her head. He was just being nice. He spotted her alone at the party with no one to talk to and he decided to be nice and get to know Rue’s childhood friend.
“Talking with you has been the best part of my year.”
Why couldn’t she just shake the sincerity in his voice? That look in his blue eyes when he listened to her and stared at her?
Letting out a tiny frustrated scream into her pillow making sure not to wake up Cassie, she pushed aside all her thoughts about him.
“C’mon Lexi, it’s a new year. Get your fucking shit together,” she whispered to herself as she stared at the green cable knit sweater hanging on the back of her vanity chair.
Fucking fearless. Pffff.
—
She knew she was out of her comfort zone in this outfit the minute Jules told her to put it on.
She shifted awkwardly as she adjusted her short denim skirt and black sleeveless bodysuit.
She carried a green cardigan in her hand.
You know, just in case she got cold or some creep decided to stare at her cleavage.
“Lexi, we’re gonna get you some tonight,” Kat yelled at her through the crowd when they entered the house party.
She cringed as she looked around through the smoke-filled house filled with drunk and high teenagers. Her heart beat as she scanned the crowd, internally scolding herself for even thinking about the last time she was at a party.
New Year's Eve.
She should’ve just stayed home.
Feeling Kat grab her hand and drag her to get a drink, she let her body follow.
Fuck it, she was here anyway.
Might as well drink.
—
She was definitely feeling the effects of the alcohol.
As she closed her eyes, she felt her body sway to the music.
For the first time, she didn’t care if people were watching her. She didn’t care about where Cassie was, if Rue was getting high somewhere, or if her friends were ok.
She smiled as she let herself loose in-between moving bodies, dancing all by herself.
This must be what fucking fearless felt like.
Smoke with me baby
Lay with me baby
Laugh with me baby girl
I just want the simple things
Her heart fluttered as she felt hands on her waist. Thinking of those bright blue eyes, freckles, those lips... She turned around to look at the person holding her waist.
“Hey, Lexi.”
“Oh heeeey, Tucker.”
Of course, it wasn’t him.
—
After making quick small talk with Tucker and excusing herself from the dance floor, she moved around the house to find an empty bathroom.
Taking deep breaths, she looked at herself in the mirror.
As much as she didn’t want to admit it, she wished it was him.
She wished she had enough guts to text him. She wished she had enough guts to walk right up to him and ask him if he was just being nice… or if he felt that deeper connection between them too...
*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*
"Just a minute!” she yelled as she flushed her imaginary pee and washed her hands, making sure not to splash water everywhere.
Opening the door, she stopped abruptly, staring at the body leaning against the wall in front of the bathroom, holding her green cardigan.
“Lexi Howard. W’sup stranger? ”
Blue eyes, staring deep into her soul. Lips curved up into a small confident smile.
It was the simple things.
Fucking fearless.
