The Knight of the Queen

Summary:

Through the centuries, the Ashkeeper Garrison sings of their most constant foe, Dusk Captain Quana Kryn, consort to the queen

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

Face and form wax and wane with the moonlight
But you'll always remember her blade
The Queen's favor's a token old and bright
So her Captain is never afraid

She's fought many a warden in Bloodwalk
Dead together by our lonely pass
Quana's fading voice echoes through Xhorhas
As she smiles and she cries and she laughs

"For nothing and no one you lose here
Lovers lonely beyond mountains tall
'Cause you know I go home to my Leylas
And return to you by the night's fall"

So hold fast and strong as the horns blast
The Knight of the Queen again calls
Win or lose she goes home to her Leylas
And returns evermore as dusk falls

Notes:

I was really fascinated with the idea of the mythology that could spring from a millennium old, reincarnating fighter, and how in places like the Ashkeeper Garrison and Bladegarden, Quana could become both an enemy of nightmares and an almost envied romantic figure who always gets to go home

Initially drafted up as part of a separate fic, but I ended up really liking how it turned out (and finished it faster than the rest of it!). Inspired by ballads like Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman, The Dornishman's Wife in A Storm of Swords, and R. Morgan Slade's fan song Port Damali, but the structure evolved into its own thing. If anyone is ever interested in putting the lyrics to music I've love to chat!
