Work Text:
neither of you ever meant for it to become this… inexplicable.
it was just meant to be a one time thing, a accident both of you pretended never happened. but some things are too good to be forgotten, and you found yourself waking up in wayne manor more often than in your own home.
you weren’t dating or anything - god no. you wouldn’t dream of it, and neither would he. your… whatever this is, was working great as is. why ruin all that with the bureaucracy of romance? plus, it wasn’t even like you two acted like a couple or anything.
sure, you had a basket of your things in his bathroom, and a few outfits in his wardrobe, and alfred knew now to set 3 places for breakfast on the mornings after you and bruce went out vigilante-ing together. but you didnt even have feelings for him like that, honestly. he was just so…. him? you know? and you were you, so obviously it could never work. you’d never even given it much thought, that was how stupid of an idea it was.
of course you’d given it some thought, but who wouldn’t have, in your situation? and yeah, obviously he was a good guy, he was a great guy even. and like, he would make a good boyfriend, you were sure of that - you could just tell - but he was never going to be your boyfriend. of course not, you would never let that happen.
you did have an agreement with eachother not to sleep around with anyone else, but that didn’t really mean anything. it was more of a just-in-case type of thing, honestly. it wasn’t like you wanted eachother to yourselves, it just made more sense this way. it was for the sake of sensibility, that’s all.
bruce rolled over in bed to look at you, his hair a disheveled halo around his head.
“darling, i’ve been thinking.” he spoke, his voice soft, like it always was in the mornings.
“oh no, don’t hurt yourself.” you retorted. it was so nice having such good banter with your coworker. he just rolled his eyes, smiling.
“wouldn’t it make more sense if you just moved all your stuff from your apartment to the manor? i’m just thinking about efficiency.”
you gave him a thoughtful look. you two had been putting this off for so long, but perhaps it was finally time to address the bat in the room.
“i agree - makes total sense. while we’re on the topic of efficiency… wouldn’t it, you know, for everyone else’s sake, obviously, be sensible for me to call you my boyfriend? just thinking about minimal confusion for everyone else.”
for a second his expression changed to something you couldn’t quite read, and your stomach dropped. maybe you’d fucked it all up.
he smiled - only slightly, but enough for you to pick up on it.
“of course - for everyone else’s sake.” he winked.
maybe what you had wasn’t so complicated after all.
