Chapter Text
Bakugo Katsuki had made mistakes in his life, he could admit this to himself at least. Like the time he tried to eat a ghost pepper before he had fully built up his tolerance, or the time he had, justifiably he thought to himself, blown up the coffee table when the cable went out, keeping him from watching the new All Might cartoon (blowing up the coffee table got him grounded from the TV which meant he had to wait even longer to watch the episode so he was still upset), but the biggest mistake he had ever made was being friends with Midoriya Izuku. Don’t get him wrong he tried to stop being friends with the cry baby when his quirk never came in, he even gave Midoriya a stupid nickname that was far crueler than any five-year-old has the right to give. But, when Izuku was the only one of his so-called friends to actually check on him when he fell in that stream he just couldn’t stop himself from taking the broccoli head’s hand.
“Kacchan!” Midoriya cried, “I was so scared when you fell, but you look fine,” his tears stopped and he smiled, his eyes glowed green “Kacchan is so brave, Kacchan will be a great hero!” He said happily.
So sue him, everyone likes to be worshiped just a little bit, and those green eyes of Izuku’s could get him just about anything if he would actually use them besides sweet-talking his mom into making katsudon a little more often than should be consumed by a 10-year-old. But he’s gotten off-topic, Bakugo’s biggest mistake was being friends with Midoriya Izuku because here he is following the greenette through piles of trash on Dagobah beach because the boy said he had found something cool and needed his help.
“Please Kacchan, you’re so strong! I can’t carry this stuff all by myself, I need a hero!” Izuku pleaded with Katsuki after school.
He really needed to stop falling for the ‘I need a hero line’ Izuku always pulled whenever he really wanted Katsuki to do something for him. “Nerd! Is it even safe to be here? Any of this stuff could fall any minute and who knows who is even hiding here!” He shouted at Midoriya’s back.
“But Kacchan, there’s so much stuff here I can use to build support items!” Midoriya cried, turning around to face Katsuki. “Plus, I have you here to protect me,” he said as he picked his way over many piles of trash and nuzzled up to Katsuki, “Alpha,” he added batting his lashes at the blonde.
“Tsch, you can’t always pull the alpha card to get me to do something Nerd,” Katsuki scoffed, though he was secretly warmed whenever Midoriya called him that. The omega trusted him more than he should have. Bakugo thought back to his childhood when he first found out Midoriya was quirkless.
He had been so upset, because for the first time in his 5 years of being on this earth he was being denied what he wanted. No, Katsuki was not spoiled, his parents were fair in what they gave him and what they didn’t. Yes he was upset when he couldn’t get the newest All Might figurine, or when they weren’t having spicy curry for dinner, but those things were fixable. He could do chores to earn money for the figure, he could wait a night for curry, but he could not fix Deku’s quirklessness. He and Izuku could never be hero partners like they had always planned.
With Izuku’s diagnosis Katsuki had to change his entire life plan. Like most little kids being denied what he wanted, what he had always planned for, made him lash out. And because he could not hit or destroy whatever made Deku quirkless, he went after Deku himself. He made Izuku into Deku, he made the quirkless boy useless to his classmates and he berated and bullied the greenette. And still, Izuku continued to be his friend, despite months of mockery and schoolyard roughness (Afterall their quirks had just come in, so most kids had quirk suppressors as they could not fully control their abilities) Izuku continued to follow Katsuki, always called him Kacchan and stayed by the blonde’s side.
When the incident at the stream occurred, Bakugo realized the people he considered his friends were no more than followers hoping to ride his coattails to glory, and that Izuku was the only one who seemed to actually care about his well being. Slowly, Katsuki repaired their relationship, he would explode anyone who dared use the name Deku in his presence, he began to protect the oblivious nerd from the bullies who would pick on him when he wasn’t paying attention, which was always, and he would listen to the nerd mumble and rant about heroes and quirks.
While everyone else around Izuku seemed to view his quirkless status as a negative, Izuku and his father took it as a challenge. Hisashi encouraged Izuku to grow and develop his analysis skills, the father and son duo could often be found watching hero and villain fights, they would strategize and analyze quirks and fighting styles. Hisashi and Inko fought frequently over this as she believed that Izuku should be kept around the apartment to keep him safe. Hisashi refused and took Izuku out whenever he could and the two would often spend their time theorizing if Bakugo joined the two he rarely was able to keep up with the conversation but he found he didn’t mind. One of the greatest things on this earth was seeing the two MIdoriya’s so happy. While Izuku got his looks from his mom, his ability to radiate pure sunshine absolutely came from Hisashi. The two together were blinding and Bakugo learned to keep a pair of sunglasses on him at all times. It didn’t hurt that it made him look that much cooler.
As both boys got older and became friends again it started to become obvious why Katsuki made such a 180 in his attitude towards Izuku so quickly. The two’s second gender began to settle around their 7th birthdays. Bakugo, to no one’s surprise, was an Alpha, and Izuku, to everyone’s surprise, was an Omega. Alpha’s were more inclined to be protective of omegas and due to their proximity as children, Bakugo subconsciously saw Izuku as part of his pack, when Izuku proved to him that he cared more about Katsuki as a person rather than just his quirk, his instincts kicked in and drove him to be better to his pack. Likewise, Izuku as an omega had always seen Katsuki as his pack and therefore had a subconscious desire to protect and care for the boy.
It had been surprising to them all that Izuku was an omega, as his father was an alpha and his mother was a beta. Typically an Alpha/Beta pairing results in a beta or an alpha, whereas an omega child is rare. His presentation only made his mother want to bubble wrap him further but his father continued to treat him as he used to. Unfortunately for Izuku, his father was called away for business in America. They received the news a year later that he had passed away, he had been collateral damage in a villain attack. This only served to make Inko more protective of her only child, but luckily Katsuki was around to act as a guard dog to keep Izuku safe while he was out and about.
After his father’s passing Midoriya began to take to the idea of building support items that could be used to keep both heroes and civilians safe in the face of a natural disaster or a villain attack. Katsuki was often dragged along for his dumpster diving sessions and became a bit of a guinea pig for his prototypes. He usually didn’t mind testing the nerd’s wacky inventions but his mom had promised him spicy curry tonight, and the hero rankings would be coming out and he wanted to watch them live. Which brought him back to the moment.
“Hurry up Nerd, mom’s making curry and the hero rankings will be on soon,” he said looking down at the shorter boy attempting to appeal to his best friend’s hero-worshiping tendencies. But his attempt was in vain, it seemed to spur the omega on further in his search. Katsuki quickly lost sight of the boy and raced to find him. Looking around himself he thought someone really needed to clean this dump up. When he finally found Izuku, the greenette was chatting with a trash gremlin. No, not gremlin he thought as he quickly analyzed the situation, Izuku had been working with him on his observational skills to help him be a more effective hero. Izuku was chatting with a very short human, who was probably their age considering the person’s height. He looked even closer as he pushed Izuku behind him, this person had pink hair, though it was hard to tell under the oil and gunk that clung to them.
“Kacchan, this is what I was talking about,” Midoriya whined as he tried to push past his friend.
“This is your Kacchan, Izu-kun?” The person questioned, leaning in closer to Bakugo, “Ah, yes, I can smell the nitroglycerin, kinda smells like caramel,” she, the voice was definitely a girl, Katsuki decided, leaned in closer to sniff him.
“Yeah!” Izuku exclaimed excitedly peering around Katsuki, “This is Kacchan, he’s gonna be the number one hero!”
Bakugo Katsuki knew at that moment that he had made many mistakes in life, but the biggest one was being friends with Midoriya Izuku. Because Midoriya was friends with one Hatsume Mei and because of that key fact, Bakugo was friends with Hatsume Mei and because he was friends with Hatsume Mei, he got blown up far more times than he would have just because of his temper.
