Grissom was walking towards Archie's lab, when, in the distance he saw Sara walking in the opposite direction - she was walking at a slow pace, reading a report. All the while he watched her, but she didn't raise her head once. Just before he passed her, he brought a hand up to his cheek.
"My dear," he greeted her in a low voice, one hand still covering part of his face.
At that greeting, Sara raised her head in surprise. She turned around and Grissom, already a few steps away from her, was continuing in his direction, but walking backwards and looking at her.
He liked to see the expression on Sara's face when, unawares, he secretly greeted her like that in public.
Her whole face held joy, but in a composed way. A crease formed between her eyebrows and her eyes were slightly bewildered. Her mouth was still, but half-open, as if about to say something.
It was only a moment. Then, always, he would turn, going on his way holding that image in his mind, which he carried with him all day.
She had learned not to smile openly at him in public; he had learned to smile openly at her in private.
