Chapter Text

  1. Burnout quick pace

Lena was already curled up in a cushioned, metal lounge chair when she felt her phone begin to vibrate against her leg. She pulled the phone from the pocket of her black skirt slowly, mentally trying to will the caller to just hang up.

She didn’t need to look down at the phone to know who was calling. And to also know that he’d just call again if there was no answer this first time.

A sigh came when the call was finally answer.

“So, you kissed her?” Lex asks immediately. His tone is playful, almost like their two teenage friends discussing a crush and not estranged siblings.

Lena knows better though. Can hear the slight edge there. She leans over and reaches for the glass of scotch on the end table beside her chair. She takes a long, slow sip before answering.

“We’re not talking about that.”

Lex chuckles.

“You have, what? 20 minutes? Do you really want to talk about that?”

“15 now. It would’ve been 20 if the call had not been left ringing for so long.”

Lena smirks at Lex’s clear irritation. She takes another slow sip of her scotch before putting the glass back down.

“It’s cold out tonight.” She finally states. She’s in nothing but a dark blue, silk blouse, a black pencil skirt and bare feet. Black heels long abandoned by her desk before she wandered out onto the patio connected to her office.

“I don’t want to hear about the weather.” Lena is sure she can hear Lex’s teeth grind.

“I’m sure you don’t being in a cement cell and all.”

“Why did you kiss the super?”

Lena had made a mistake. A big mistake.

“There was mistletoe, isn’t that what you’re supposed to do?”

When she figures out who, Lena swears she’s firing and blacklisting the employee who hung that stupid plant.

“It’s a Christmas charity ball. Not a kissing booth.”

“Trust me Lex, I am very much aware of that.”

Lena can still see Supergirl’s wide blue eyes staring back at her after they’d parted. She still doesn’t know what possessed her to lean in and press their lips together in the first place.

“Thinking about it?” Lex sing-songs.

“No.”

Yes.

“Does it really matter that I kissed her?”

“It will to the media.”

Lena resists the urge to groan aloud; she doesn’t want to give the Lex the satisfaction.

“It was an accident. I won’t be speaking on it and I’m sure it will die down over the weekend.”

She wishes.

“Be careful, sister.” She hated when he referenced their only, suffocating connection to each other. “Being entangled with a super can be a messy, messy affair.”

Lena hears a chime. She nearly takes a breath, so relieved that the call is almost over. A minute to spare.

“I guess this is it.” Lex sighs. “Good luck tomorrow.”

“Bye.”

The line cuts and Lena sags even more in the lounge chair.

It’s nearly midnight, but instead of going home, she spends the next hour thinking about the smoothness of Supergirl’s cheek against the hand she’d placed there and the warmth coming from her lips as they’d kissed.

On the other side of National City, Lena cannot imagine the freakout a certain super is having.

***

Saturday morning, Lena reluctantly decides to stay home over the weekend and leave any L-Corp emergencies to Sam and Jess. She’s just going to order take-out, watch old movies, and not look at social media or any news at all.

“Are you sure about this?” Sam doesn’t bother to hide the shock in her voice.

“I can work from home if it’s an issue.” Lena immediately jumps at the chance to renege and just work her day away.

Sam scoffs. “You know I don’t mind looking after things. Besides, the weekends are usually quiet anyway. The only work is the work you create for yourself.”

“I don’t create work for myself!”

“Yeah, sure.” Lena can hear the eye roll in Sam’s tone. “What I mean is, do you really want to avoid the situation?”

“My PR team is handling it. It might be best that no one gets me on camera trying to explain why I kissed Supergirl.”

“Why did you kiss her?”

“There was mistletoe.”

Lena is near terrified that she’s going to have this conversation over and over again

Why the hell did she kiss Supergirl?

Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

“Why was that even there?”

“You ask too many questions.”

“Hey, I’m just asking the ones all over the headlines.” Sam responds with a laugh at Lena’s obvious cageyness.

“No, no, no! We are not talking about the headlines.”

“Really? You don’t want to hear about TMZ’s Luthor and A Super’s Steamy Mistletoe Liplock?”

“I do not hear any of this.”

“You’re worse than my pre-teen.”

“Good.” Lena blows a raspberry into the phone for effect. Nearly smiles when she hears Sam laugh again.

“Alright Luthor, enjoy avoiding the consequences of your actions!”

“I will.”

Then Lena is pulled back in the silence of her penthouse. She decides on sprawling across the long white sofa in the middle of her living room in nothing but rainbow socks and a black robe and with Netflix blaring from the Macbook laying across her stomach.

Her phone, her only connection to the outside world, is tossed into her closet. Lena desperately wills herself not to think about that.

She loses her mind watching the 2nd season of Love is Blind before ordering Thai food from a shop down the street. Then she spends another few hours yelling at couples on Marriage or Mortgage.

Lena does feel a bit restless eventually. Truthfully, she’s felt restless the whole day but she’s managed to be successful in not checking her phone once. Much to her own surprise.

She wanders off the couch and out onto her balcony. Like her nights at L-Corp, Lena finds a lounge chair and just folds into it, looking out at the breathtaking view of National City’s skyline before her.

It’s cold out again and Lena wishes that she had not left her robe on the couch in favor of going out in her sleep shorts and tank top only.

She especially wishes she had the robe when she notices Supergirl in the night sky…headed directly towards her.

When Supergirl does touch down on her balcony and stands near the rail, Lena sits up in her seat immediately.

“Ms. Luthor.”

Sharp blue eyes seems to take in every part of her body. Lena visibly shivers. Despite the tenseness of Supergirl’s stance, she seems to be smiling genuinely at her.

Lena offers a tense, nervous smile of her own back.

“Supergirl.”

The super seems to take this as an invitation to walk forward until she’s standing a couple of feet away from Lena.

Lena stands and Supergirl steps closer, directly in her space. Lena hardly notices this as she looks down at her hands and begins to fumble with an apology.

“Look, I’m-“ She cuts off the moment she feels two, warm hands, cup her cheeks and lift her face.

Lena looks up at Supergirl, who is now staring at her intently. Green eyes flutter shut the moment the other woman leans in and presses their lips together.
