The boy I used to Know

Summary:

"Are you shitting me?" a loud voice echoes in the crowded room. "It's Deku's sister."

"Step. Sister." Mina replied excitedly, of course she was going to be, she always was when it came to Katsuki's love life. What a loser.

“It’s the same shit, I don’t want anything to do with them.” He scowled deeply. Just thinking about having to see Deku more than it was required made him sick. He didn’t need that.

If only he knew.

In this story we’ll see our babies struggle with their feelings and a person stepping in the middle :(

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

"Are you shitting me?" a loud voice echoed in the crowded room.

“No! It’s not, they’re not even close I think…” Kaminari spoke, beaming like an idiot. Why was it that everyone was so invested in his love life? Not even he was that invested, he had priorities, duties, hero work.

“Oh, c’mon, just take a look and if you don’t like her, we won’t push it anymore, okay?” Kirishima’s loud and annoying voice made it to his ears.

God, he just wanted them to shut the hell up for once. It wasn’t that he didn’t wanted to date someone, he wanted and he’s gone to a few dates before. It’s just… not Deku’s sister that he wanted to date, it felt wrong for some reason.

But… he went along.

“K’ show me.”

A screen was pressed to his face, making him back a little with an annoyed expression.

She was really cute, that’s what Katsuki thought.
She had long, straight blonde hair. She had blue eyes, slit shaped and thin, rosy lips. She looked kinda mean, but that was okay with him. He liked that, right?

He told them he would ask her out, making his dumbass friends cheer and snicker.

As he thought about his love life, how it would be to be with someone in a relationship for the first time, he couldn’t deny that he felt kind of giddy about it, so he said yes.

“You can’t just grab my stuff, Kairi.” Izuku said trough his plastered smile. Kairi was really testing his patience.

“Why not? We’re siblings from now on.” She replied with a fake smile, deep, blue eyes boring into his soul. He didn’t know why, but Kairi seem to have some issues with him. She would always pick fights with him over small things, would blame him for something he didn’t do, would make snarky comments about his appearance and laugh at him for his hobbies and personality, so yes, Izuku can say that she had some dislike towards him.

Taking a deep breath, he eased up his hands into his pants and walked carefully to sit beside her.

“You know… you can always ask me first if you need anything…” He said with a soft voice. He thought maybe he could get along with her. Ever since the day they met, he have been trying. He had been trying for his mother, because she was happy and he didn’t wanted to disturb that happiness, but it was getting kind of hard. Extremely hard.

Kairi just shrugged, going back to look at her phone as if Izuku wasn’t there. I did hurt a little.

“There’s your stupid hat anyway.” She said flatly, eye’s trained on her phone.

He looked over where she pointed, looking at the grey bucket hat laying on the floor. Great.

He sighed, kneeling down to grab the hat. The item was a gift he got from Uraraka when they went to America, so it was really especial to him. Sometimes he wondered if there would be a day when he could call the girl beside him, playing no mind to his existence, a sister. He felt bad about it because he always wanted a sibling.

“Close the door behind you, would’ ya?” Kairi said with a fake, excited voice. Her eyes sharp towards Izuku’s figure.

‘I’m doing this for my mom, I’m doing this for mom.”

Katsuki had decided he would ask Deku’s sister out. Today was the first step to meet her, all thanks to the hag. His mom came to him yelling and cursing, telling him to get ready, they were having dinner with the Midoriya’s.

Easy.

He dressed in a simple black shirt and black jeans as well, his red converse and his brown jacket. He looked good, damn good. The nineteen year old was always praised for his looks.

They arrived to the small house in a lapse of thirty minutes and it was a calm ride, no shouting, no bickering. As the family got out of the car, Katsuki couldn’t help but notice the light coming from one of the rooms above. More specific, Deku’s room.

Red eyes stayed trailed on the dim light coming from the window. He took in the silhouette moving across the room that he recognized to be the green haried boy. It’s been a long time since they saw each other. It’s been only six months after they graduated UA and Katsuki haven’t done anything to reach out for the other.

Deku have tried, plenty of times actually, but the blond turned him down every time.

He feels kinda shitty about it, just a little.

He sighed when the silhouette stayed still as if looking at Katsuki. That’s when the blond decided to move.

They were greeted with smiles and hugs from auntie, she seemed very happy, almost glowing or some shit. Katsuki has never seen her more happy since Izuku’s dad left. The green haired woman smiled at him and squished his cheeks together.

“Oh, look at you! All grown up and handsome. It’s been a while since you were here!” She scolded him with a playful smile. He then noticed the other two individuals standing in front of him.

A tall, blonde man stood with a large smile all over his face. He had blue eyes and a pearly smile.

“Hey, there!” Said the stranger that he assumed, was aunties new boyfriend. “My name is Haru, nice to meet you Katsuki. Izuku has told us a lot about you!” He beamed. ‘Has he?’ Katsuki quirked an eyebrow.

“Nice to meet you, sir.” He said with a tight lipped smile.

“Oh, you haven’t meet Kairi, my daughter.”

Katsuki looked beside the men, there was this chick, Kairi, Deku’s step sister. His target.

“Hi, nice to meet you, Katsuki.” The blonde girl now identified as Kairi, said with toothy smile. She was hot. He thought.

“Nice to meet you too, Kairi.” He said with a smirk, taking the warm hand in his. Based on the expression on her face and the way she looked at him, he at least gave her an impression.

“Hah, okay guys!” Haru’s squeaky voice crashed the moment, and he placed both of his hands on each teenager’s shoulder even though he was shorter than Katsuki. “Now, where’s Izuku?

‘Yeah, where’s Deku?’ Katsuki thought, Deku hasn’t come down yet.

“Oh, don’t worry about him, he’s just busy.” Inko shrugged.

“Oh, with what? Maybe I can help him a little.” His dad said with a slight frown and his mother nodded with a twin frown. They always  cared about Izuku as if the nerd was their own child. Something about Izuku needing extra love or some shit.

“Oh, it’s fine, he said he’s glueing something.”

He wanted to cry, Izuku wanted to cry.

For the first time in nearly four months, he was truly upset at something Kairi did.
He sighed as he looked at the broken frame. The little frogs hanging on the frame were now shattered and he felt his eyes stung. Why? He has tried anything to be at peace with her, everything he can do to help her, he does it, he tries to help her out when he sees her crying for her mother but she would only lash out at him. Maybe he was a bit suffocating but he was trying his best, it wasn’t easy for him either.

He thinks about his father and felt the rim of his eyes starting to get wet. Why wouldn’t anybody love him? Was he really that repulsive to be around? The thought of that made him sob. He wasn’t enough for anyone, not for his dad to stay, not for his friends to hang out with him anymore, not to Kairi as a brother, not to his mom as a son… not to Kacchan…

Kacchan.

A wobbly smile crept onto his face when he looked down at the broken picture resting on his lap. Two little kids smiling at the camera with their cheeks smashed against the other with their little frog hats.

Another sob.

He didn’t feel like going down there and see Katsuki in the face for the first time in nearly six months. He couldn’t take that look of disgust now, the scowl, the sharp red eyes.

But he had to, for his mother.

He wiped the tears out of his face and smiled slightly at the mirror. Everything was just fine.
He placed the broken pieces of the frame on the top drawer, taking a good look at it before he closed the door.

“Ah, there you are!” His mom’s boyfriend said with an excited glint.

Haru was nice. He had been nice since the day they met, always making sure Izuku was comfortable and Izuku was grateful for that.

“Oh, hi! Sorry, I-I was just, um, busy.” He gave a sheepish smile, scratching his red ear. He ignored the looks of concern thrown at him, from his mother, from Mitsuki and Masaru. The look of annoyance by Kairi and… the intrigued one by Katsuki.

“It’s okay, Zuku. Dinner’s ready!”

He took a seat beside Katsuki, who was sitting beside Kairi, seemly having a fun conversation.

“H-Hi, Kacchan.” He rasped out and the blond raised a questioning brow at him.

“Hey, nerd.” He muttered curtly, sending a pang to Izuku’s chest, so he just smiled slightly, the smile not making it to his eyes.

He heard the conversation they were having. They seemed to get along, she was actually being nice and sweet, curling her blonde hair around her slim, non- scarred finger while smiling at Katsuki, who smiled back. And it pained Izuku to see that smile that was never directed towards him.

He tried to look away and hide the sadness growing on his face. Seeing Katsuki talking to someone else so easily did hurt a lot. It hurt that Izuku always tried to have small conversations with the blond, who didn’t even gave him a chance. He didn’t had his chance to talk to the other so freely like Kairi was, only when they were kids.

He just stayed silent the whole night. He answered some questions that were thrown at him and that’s it. He tried to smile and pretend he was enjoying the visit. He did at some extent.
He enjoyed the way Katsuki’s smile stretched across his sharp and handsome face. He enjoyed looking at him because at some point Katsuki got even more handsome. He looked stunning.

When the Bakugou’s were about to leave, Masaru and Mitsuki turned to him when he was alone at the porch. Katsuki was in the car already.

“Hey, Izuku?” The blond woman approached him with a slight frown, her husband behind her.

“Yeah? Is anything wrong, auntie?”

At that Mitsuki smiled.

“I think that’s the question I wanted to ask you.”

He stayed quiet, looking at them with a tight smile.

“Are you okay, son?” He felt Masaru’s warm hand on his shoulder, making him sniff a little.

“I-I, I mean, i will be. Don’t worry”

“Are you sure? Do you need anything…?” They sounded truly concerned. Izuku was grateful for having them in his life.

“Yeah, I’d let you know, thank you.” He muttered quietly.

He didn’t notice the concerned looks from the couple in front of him.

His parents were taking ages while he was waiting in the car. He shuffled uncomfortable, crossing his bulky arms over his chest. The dinner went fine, Kairi was funny and pretty, so yeah, he was going to ask her out, he even got her phone number and shit. It was weird, all this thing about dates, he never thought that one day he would take interest in someone. He knew he was doing this because deep down… he wanted to know what it was to be cared of, to have someone thinking about him day and night and holding hands. Yeah, he wanted that.

Green eyes and brown freckles flashed on his mind.

Deku.

He’s never heard of Izuku going out in dates or even liked someone, his only suspect was Uraraka but that couldn’t be because she was with Iida. And one more thing. Izuku came out as gay not long ago. Whoever… the greenette looked… sad. He looked tired and Katsuki was sure that Izuku had been crying judging by the puffy, red eyes. Fucking nerd. Pathetic.

“Sorry for the wait!” His mother voice interrupted his thoughts about green eyes, he was thankful.

“It’s fine.”

“Poor kid… it must be really hard.” He heard his father muster with a sad look, eyes trailed on Izuku’s window.

“Ah… i know.”

“What’s wrong with the nerd?” He asked, not really interested, eyes glued on his phone.

“Well, you saw it yourself, brat.” His mother turned to look at him with a sad smile. Yeah, he saw that too.

“It was probably nothing.” He grumbled. He knows the greenette could be so dramatic sometimes, like the time he cried over stupid Denki falling from a second floor. The guy survives to literal electric brain shocks.

“I don’t know, he seems so… off.” His mother was right, he didn’t looked like the nerd he knew since a long time ago. He noticed how every time people would ask him about himself, he would just wave them off with a cheap lie. How most nights at UA Izuku would just sat on the yard alone, in thought. He noticed the heavy eyes, the bags under emerald gems, the weak smile. So yeah, it was probably something.

“Whatever, I don’t care. Can we just go home now? I’m tired.”

He ignored the sad look in both of his parents.

Izuku never felt this lonely before. Even when his house was full with three people. He felt alone, left out and not cared of. He had to watch his mother play mom for Kairi and wife for Haru and it was hard, because she wasn’t trying for him, it was like she didn’t want to spend time with him anymore, he felt… hopeless. He didn’t want to strain his mother’s happiness though. Inko was finally happy and in love for the first time in years so who was he to take that away from her just because he felt a little lonely. He couldn’t.

With a tired sigh, the greenette rolled over the bed, silky sheets sliding down his waist, getting comfortable to sleep when a knock on his door disturbed the peace.

He sat up on the bed, looking confused.

“Come in!”

What he did not expected was to Kairi to be at his door at nearly 1:00 a.m.

His now step sister was wearing her blue pijamas, looking at Izuku with a single brow up. He curled the sheets with his fists, still mad at her for breaking the photo.

“Kairi” He said trough gritted teeth. “How can i help you?” He was truly intrigued, Kairi never showed up to his room unless she needed something.

She took a few steps until she was staring down at Izuku and then gave him that fake smile he knows she does when she needs a favor. God.

“Just wanted to ask you some things, you know, about your friend?” She purred with a little grin. “Katsuki.” At this, Izuku stiffened. All of his muscles going to tense. Did she take interest in Katsuki?

He didn’t liked the feeling bubbling in his chest.

Kairi stared at him as he was broken, or dumb.

“Izuku!” She smacked her slim fingers in front of his face, bringing Izuku back to reality.

“Ah, yes, sorry. What do you want to know about Kac-” He shut his mouth, not wanting Kairi to know about the nickname. “K-Katsuki.” It felt so weird, saying the blond’s birth name…

Kairi sat down on his bed, ignoring the slightly irritated look green eyes threw her way.

“Like, what he likes and dislikes, that kind of stuff.” She rolled her eyes as if the question was stupid. “I want to know more about him!” She grinned so brightly for the first time since she started living with them.

He smiled a little, she looked more approachable that way. But as soon as she catches Izuku’s smile, hers fades away, replacing it with a serious expression.

“Um… sure but, why do you want to know about him?” He asked carefully, fear laced in his voice.
He was afraid of her taking from him another person he loved, to take the attention even if he hadn’t hang out with Kacchan since graduation, even if Kacchan cut any type of contact they had.

“He asked me out.” She grinned.

Izuku’s world came crushing down. ‘No. No, no, no’

It was true. Kairi was shoving her phone in his face, showing her conversation with his childhood friend.

‘Katsuki :)’

He asked her out, like an hour ago.

‘Don’t cry, don’t cry’ he tried to mask it. He tried to mask the fear, the jealousy, the sadness… it was too difficult because he couldn’t control his breathing, he couldn’t control the shaking fists gripping tightly at the green sheets. Kairi stared at him with a confused look, as if wanting to ask what the hell was wrong with him. She looked annoyed to no end, but he couldn’t focus on that for now, no. He was too focused on his heart racing like crazy.

“Izuku!” She yelled at him, face contorted with annoyance.

“Um, do you think we can continue this conversation another day? I’m not feeling very well and I need some rest.” It all came out in a whisper. He couldn’t look at her because he would probably start crying.

She just looked at him with a raised brow, as if contemplating what she was seeing. Until she sighed loudly and got up, stomping her way out of the room with a loud slam of the white door.

He let out a shaky breath and stayed still in his sitting position. This was too much.

He thought about ember eyes staring at him back at UA, the little sparks of orange in them. He thought about spiky blonde hair and strong jaw. The way his face relaxed when he was studying or thinking about something. The way he would smirk at Izuku and ruffle his hair with a big, strong hand. About all of that.

Izuku broke into sobs that night, gripping the sheets and pulling them to his mouth so not a single sound would pierce the olive walls and as he stared at the moon from the couch placed by the window, he understood.

Katsuki would never love him, Katsuki would never see him.
