Chapter Text

Yanfei never liked to call.

She was always talkative but keeping up a conversation over the phone proved difficult. It was hard to talk to people without having a face that she could put the voices to.

Could never visualize their faces quite well enough.

And well, the silence when neither of them had anything to say wasn’t quite so enjoyable. But texting was much better. She could get her words out better, and her personality shined through in messaging compared to calling.

On the other hand, the brunette called Hutao loved calls. It was so fun to get your words across so fast and without the “unnecessary” staring and smiling. She loved cutting off others’ sentences and screaming in the microphone just in case they had headphones on.

Always the prankster, her classmates called her.

Messages were just too slow.

It was a weekend morning, and Yanfei was hoping to get some rest.

A generic ringtone played from Yanfei’s phone, displaying a ghost icon, and the words, “Hutao.” displayed itself on the screen. On the top of the phone read the time and date. 4:36. Feb 5.

Being a heavy sleeper, Yanfei had set the ringtone especially loud and it bit back, blasting the obnoxious music into her quite sensitive ears. The coral-haired girl groaned in dismay. She was going to go deaf someday.

Yanfei grabbed her phone defeatedly as it continued to ring and picked up.

“Hello? This is Yanfei..” Her voice came out raspy and deep.

Hutao’s breath hitched.

“Hello...? Tao?” Yanfei’s voice again pitched through the phone. Hutao responded by unleashing what was the loudest scream ever.

“HIIIIYANYAN,GOODMORNINGGGGGGG!”

Of course, this wasn't the first occurrence of the morning calls and Yanfei had already prepared for this event. She quickly held the phone away from her ears and turned down the volume hastily.

A series of giggles could be heard from the phone as Yanfei turned up the volume again.

She sighed. “Good morning, Hutao. What do I owe the pleasure of your call?”

“Oh nothingggg, just checking up on you!” Her grin could be heard over the static-y noise of Yanfei’s outdated(but still working) phone.

“You’ve come up to check on me every day for the past two weeks, I think it’s something more than that.” Yanfei sat up in her bed, preparing for an answer.

Silence. Yanfei smirked and was coming up with a callout when Hutao replies in a bold tone.

“If you really must know, it’s because I love your voice.”

It was Yanfei’s breath that hitched this time. She had always favored Hutao more than others in her friend group, leading to callouts from Xingqiu, and Xiao. Petty bastards. If it weren’t for Aether and Chongyun announcing their relationship you wouldn't have guessed they were dating anyone from that attitude.

She favors Hutao a lot, more than anyone in their friend group. She likes her a lot. More than a friend would.

Hutao stayed silent, and so did Yanfei.

The brunette couldn’t believe she uttered such a bold statement to her crush and she was all ready to sink into high depression.

“Thank you.” Yanfei’s flustered voice came through and Hutao’s face flushed a deep vermillion red.

“It’s no problem! AHAHA.” She was trying to keep her cool(especially difficult since Yanfei uttered: “Thank you” in such a cute manner) and her little nervous laugh betrayed her attempts at masking said nervousness.

“I...have to get ready- talk to you later.” Yanfei was quick to end the call.

She flopped onto her bed again, having stood up at the sudden slight confession. She could almost see Hutao’s confident and relaxed face peering at her as her brick-red glossed lips said those words, putting her into a trance.

Her head felt strangely lightheaded and her ears were redder than her coral pink hair. She ran to the bathroom sink and turned on the water. She splashed the cool pristine water onto her face, but it hardly got rid of the burning sensation felt on her cheeks.

Hutao is so cute.
