Dried Plum

An acquired taste

Mild spoilers for Majima’s arc in Dead Souls

Work Text:

Somehow, all of their physical affection only happened by force. Intimacy at the most incoherent of times. For Kashiwagi and Majima, for yakuza in general, it wasn’t unusual. Preferable, even, comfort given in the only way they understood. Even when they attempted domesticity, it had the tendency to morph into violence at the swing of a fist. There were an endless amount of ways for their innocuous “meetings” to self-destruct.

For example, at the moment they’re only five centimeters apart from each other in this storage room, listening to the groaning and clawing of the undead on the other side of the wall.

The day started off normal enough. That should have been the first clue.

Majima was astounded that Kashiwagi had never watched Back 2 Die Again: Zombie Apocalypse Fever Deluxe (and Majima was the only person on the planet surprised.) Those types of movies simply weren’t Kashiwagi’s thing. The closest Kashiwagi had gotten to any undead action was when he cleaned up after high schoolers Kiryu and Nishiki as they fled from one of their multiple hiding spots (some well-hidden enough that Kashiwagi never encountered them, some clearly not.) The pair of them hadn’t managed to get their hands on actual adult material, so they settled with horror movie magazines that straddled the lines of decency, strewn across the floor in a hurry.

Even back then, Kashiwagi had aged out of naked tits bringing forth any emotion. Obviously-fake gore did nothing for him either. He dangled the crumpled pages of zombies tearing off mostly clothes, and a little flesh, then promptly tossed them away.

From the way Majima spoke about this movie in particular, it sounded different: a true masterpiece, upheld in the echelons of Japanese cinema. Knowing Majima, perhaps it was slightly exaggerated. But, Kashiwagi was willing to attend a private showing on his day off for reasons that no one else understood. Because of his compliance, Majima practically dragged him up (practically, because Majima tended to keep his hands off in public) the stone steps to the Millennium Tower entrance.

“Sir, can I get your approval on these contract extensions?” Nishida had been following them since they all exited the car, but Majima only turned on his heels and gave Nishida a deep, dark look before heading up to the office with Kashiwagi still in tow. Kashiwagi made a mental note to send Nishida some sort of useful gift for his troubles later.

His reminiscence finally reaching the present, he looked towards the eyepatched man yukking it up next to him at someone getting their brain devoured. Sensing his gaze (as he was always good at), Majima turned to Kashiwagi with a wild expression; his previous coldness was nowhere to be found.

“Yer blood pumping hard, Kashiwagi-san?”

“Not at the moment,” Kashiwagi replied brusquely. Even with the premier surround-sound system and high-definition footage, artfully shot as well as one could artfully shoot a decaying horde, Kashiwagi found himself bored. He liked the challenge of a good, hard fight. The actual, visceral experience. The deadly risk. Something about humans being helplessly attacked by zombies did nothing for him. Lack of decorum, perhaps, or enthusiasm. There was no fun in fighting an enemy with no awareness, and the zombies weren't even very fast. If this were set in a jungle with tigers instead, maybe Kashiwagi could have mustered some emotion.

“Seriously? Just look at 'em! Imagine being able to crush their skulls in, guilt-free!” Majima pointed at one getting beaten by a shovel on the screen, then clenched his hand into a fist. “What guy wouldn’t want a piece of that action?”

They continued to watch the movie as Majima kept going on and on about the zombies’ fighting prowess and the shot choices (gun and camera-wise). It wasn’t unwelcome witnessing Majima so energetic, but slightly exhausting all the same when Kashiwagi didn’t understand the fervor. Lightly stretching, Kashiwagi shifted closer to Majima, to no reaction. Eventually, their elbows faintly touched. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Majima look over, but neither of them drew attention to it.

A head tilt onto Majima's shoulder is all the relaxation Kashiwagi allowed himself. The jacket's texture was moderately comforting and faintly smelled like blood. Now, that alone got Kashiwagi going. But their current situation was too comfortable, despite the screams from the television in front of them, so his cheek didn’t lift from the warmth. His thumb slipped into the glove of the hand next to him, rubbing over Majima's warm and bony wrist. Mind now wandering, Kashiwagi wondered if Majima lived here or slunk around the city for hotels. The sofa worked nicely enough as a bed and there were plenty of restaurants nearby, so cooking wasn’t necessary (He'd only invited Majima over to his own apartment once, and Majima's bloodthirsty gaze towards his clean kitchen stove still gave him shivers.)

The hand withdrew from Kashiwagi’s touch, only to sling around his shoulder with a gentle tug towards him. They still weren’t pressed up against each other, but they were closer.

How long was this movie? The zombies and methods of slaughter seemed endless. All the while, the two men leaned against each other. Not a cuddle, nor an embrace…whatever it was, Kashiwagi couldn’t be bothered to assign the proper term. He felt Majima's exhalations lightly blow strands of his hair, making him sneeze above. If someone were to walk in and see them, it would surely appear abnormal. However, it was nice. At his age, should he give a damn about anything else? He knew what the true answer was, but for now, Kashiwagi decided on “No.”

In this comfortable haze, focusing in and out of the movie, Kashiwagi finally decided to humor Majima and asked-

"What would you do if a zombie bit me?"

There was silence. Kashiwagi finally looked up into Majima’s dull eye staring back. Like he was sizing him up for an alleyway fight, or how he faced Nishida below at the entrance. How he looked on business. Finally-

“That’d just be too bad, wouldn’t it?”

Kashiwagi didn't know what he expected.

"So you'd do the right thing, I presume," Kashiwagi heard himself say. Majima made a non-committal noise; whether it was because Majima didn’t know or he didn’t care to answer, Kashiwagi couldn’t discern.

There’s a strange feeling inside of him at his own words. If he was honest…

Disappointment.

Of course, Kashiwagi shouldn’t have expected anything more. They were grown and responsible men with duties, with families to take care of. Neither of them were getting younger, their bodies edging towards their eventual decline, if he was to be honest. And this was only a ridiculous scenario after all, one where it was necessary for Kashiwagi to be killed, but -

Did Majima do the right thing when it came to Saejima, all but guaranteed dead? With Makoto?

Even just thinking that sounded absurd to Kashiwagi. He wasn’t their level of importance to Majima and he knew that. Yet, with Majima's recklessness...The feeling lingered all the same.

Perhaps an old dog finally learned new tricks.

"-So don’t go slacking off" Majima continued and Kashiwagi immediately snapped back to attention.

"What was that?"

"I said, old man," Majima poked Kashiwagi’s chest with a gloved finger. "That I’m the only one that’s allowed to bite ya’.”

With that, Majima chomped his cheek.

Kashiwagi’s yell was eclipsed by a yell from the television, and that was eclipsed by a louder shriek from outside of the office, then glass breaking.

It’s been a couple hours since then, Kashiwagi believes. He hasn’t checked his phone in order to preserve the battery, not that he was sure it would even be useful now. Based on Majima’s furious texting (almost breaking his keypad), nothing seemed to be getting through. They’ve been hunting for ammo in the storerooms, securely locked behind them, but weren’t having much luck. Despite Nishida’s best efforts, everything was a mess and Majima couldn’t remember a few of their own safes’ codes. Still, they needed to scrounge as much as they could before leaving. Their lives depended on it, after all.

Earlier, both of them had turned at the noise and were greeted by a minor Majima family member (who, Kashiwagi unfortunately wasn’t sure), bleeding out of his neck with two corpses shambling behind him. Recognizing actual zombies had entered the family office, Majima had pulled out a shotgun from underneath the couch and started blasting without hesitation. He quickly tossed Kashiwagi, stunned by the scene, another gun while reloading his own; Kashiwagi still hadn’t had the chance to use it, as they quickly noticed the growing undead crowd in the hallways, and hustled quickly into the backrooms. Now, two grown men were in the middle of a scavenger hunt.

“It’s a dream come true for you, isn’t it, Majima?” Kashiwagi half-heartedly asks, still digging through the shelves. Of course something like this would happen when the two of them were together.

There’s no response. Kashiwagi turns around, the atmosphere oddly quiet, and is immediately pressed against the wall by the man himself. One hand is planted by the side of his head, the other hand rubbing his hip. Kashiwagi could fight his way out, of course, but he only waits for whatever stunt Majima’s trying to pull. They face each, only a kiss apart.

“Too slow." Majima speaks in a low volume. "Need to pay more attention if you wanna last out there."

“Get on with it,” Kashiwagi dryly replies.

“What if we’re stuck here? Just you and me, alone in the back of my office?”

Kashiwagi feels pressure on his groin, a warm squeeze. He knows exactly what it is, but refuses to look downward, keeping his gaze trained on Majima’s face.

“Afraid of starving?”

"Well, I'm only gonna be able to get one or two servings of protein if this keeps up," Majima comments sadly, eye trailing downward. The other man twitches.

"You're so damn crude, even at a time like this," Kashiwagi mutters.

"I invite you over for a zombie thriller, then you scooch next to me and start rubbing all over...Of course it gets a guy going. All the adrenaline from before's helping too." Majima's look was almost of pity. Kashiwagi refrains from rolling his eyes, but can't stop his blush at Majima's embellished words. Rubbing all over…he only touched his bare wrist.

The blush is not lost on Majima, of course, at this distance. "Keeping stress inside isn't good, Kashiwagi-san. The protein’ll taste bad."

Kashiwagi immediately smacks him on the shoulder in response, which only results in Majima slamming him harder against the wall. He leans back in and licks the bite mark left on Kashiwagi’s soft cheek. Gently tests another bite, fitting his teeth in the same groove marks.

“Aren’t I always pent-up according to you?” Kashiwagi gives up, decides to allow himself to relax and experience the pleasure flowing through his limbs. He's mainly kept upright by Majima’s pressing tightly against him; they were two pieces of a puzzle.

It's not like he hates it, after all. This was how it always went. Majima knew how to spoil Kashiwagi through his body and he knew Kashiwagi spoiled him (and only him) enough by allowing it.

“Am I wrong?” Majima tilts his head before they both turn at another suspiciously-loud clang. Fortunately, the zombies here didn’t appear to have much intelligence. Safe inside, for now.

"We have different ideas of restraint," Kashiwagi grumbles. Their conversations always went like this too, right before Majima...relieved him. Both of them.

“Don’t let the stress kill you before the zombies do, Kashiwagi-san.” A serious tone now.

“Just take another bite while you’re at it, then.”

“I will,” Majima threatens. “By the way, you’ve been eating more of those dried ginger snacks lately?"

“Plums. Omiyage from a Yokohama trip. I gave you some, remember?”

“Yeah, yeah…” Majima goes in for another lick and scrape, now where the scar crosses the bridge of Kashiwagi’s nose.

“Why, do I taste like them?"

“A little.” Hot breath huffs against Kashiwagi’s lips. “Those things out there feast on you, all they’re gonna taste is fruit leather.”

"All they're going to taste of you is real leather," Kashiwagi states, finally looking down at Majima's busy hand. He would know. Majima only cackles into Kashiwagi's skin and shoves a leg in between Kashiwagi’s thighs as a response.

"Earlier," Kashiwagi bites back a groan as Majima grinds harder. “You…asked how I felt about fighting zombies.”

“You pumped up now?” Did Majima even have to ask? His teeth are against Kashiwagi’s throat, blood beating hard through his arteries.

“Yes - in a way.” It’s becoming difficult for Kashiwagi to respond, his words starting to come out as chokes. He wraps his arms around Majima’s shoulders to keep himself steady, one hand gripping Majima’s hair while the other man continues to feast.

“Good. What about it?” Majima only hums.

“You’ll hold yourself to your earlier statement, then?” Kashiwagi can’t stop himself, despite the pleasure. What different answer does he expect now that it’s come true: the insane reality where the two of them can’t stop feeling each other up, even as the undead wait outside to eat their flesh before a skyline view? He doesn’t know. Majima briefly pauses, lips still brushing against skin, before lifting away to face Kashiwagi.

“Said the only person biting you’s gonna be me, didn’t I?" Majima’s expression is stern, but not unfeeling as before. “Don't plan on keeling over so soon. Unless you’re in a hurry to die." His eye darts to the side after he finishes speaking, in what appears as some embarrassment. Kashiwagi continues staring at him, a bit stunned.

I’m not gonna let you die.

It was beyond Majima’s capabilities to actually say that, and more. It would go against every oath they ever swore to their own families, every fight they ever fought. To speak those words would be a step too far, one that neither of them were sure they could accept no matter how much they (thought they) wanted it.

But perhaps it didn't need to be said at all. If they both understood, perhaps this was all they needed.

While Kashiwagi still doubts their fighting capabilities as staggering hunks of meat on bone, he had to admit bloodthirsty zombies in the flesh presented a different sort of challenge than he previously assumed. And with Majima by his side…

“Let's have a wager,” Kashiwagi proposes after some contemplation.

“Huh?”

Kashiwagi nods over to their guns, fallen to the wayside. “I finish off more of those things out there than you, you dress properly for our next meeting. I know you still own some ties.” The other man curls his lip in incredulous disgust.

“Oi, shouldn’t you love me for who I am…” With a groan, Majima slumps into Kashiwagi’s shoulder, but Kashiwagi can see the glint in his eye. “Do I have to eat all your snacks too?”

“It’d be polite.”

“Who’s gonna have any more meetings in the zombie apocalypse anyway?”

“The Tojo clan, once we start cleaning up around Kamurocho," Kashiwagi answers in an exasperated, but gentle tone. Majima is looking up from Kashiwagi's collarbone with an oddly-soft gaze in return.

“We could just let 'em all get snuffed. We don't need 'em." Somehow, that sounds like a proposal. But perhaps Majima is simply excited by the thought of no conferences, all slaughter.

Before Kashiwagi can speak, they both hear a muffled vibration from somewhere. Without lifting himself away from Kashiwagi, Majima whips out the cellphone from his tight pants pocket to check the notification, only to jump back in excitement. “That ass finally sent over the numbers! Took him long enough! I oughta dock his pay...”

“Majima, it's not his fault you can’t be bothered to remember your own codes. Take notes on your phone or something,” Kashiwagi sighs. He’ll have to send Nishida a bigger apology package whenever he can get around to it.

“Kashiwagi-san, I have more important things to take care of in my day-to-day,” Majima chides. “Like so.” His leg is still between Kashiwagi’s thighs, nudging. Majima looks back with a grin, waiting for the older man to initiate. It’s an extremely punchable expression (so much so that Kashiwagi has to close his own eyes to restrain himself), but like Majima, Kashiwagi has more important things to take care of. “Unless you want to open those safes instead-”

Kashiwagi is already forcing Majima's gloved hand back down below with an aroused glare, and Majima is eager to please.

They can spare another ten minutes. It’s only the end of the world, after all.
