Chapter 1: Chess

Notes:

Idea: ‘Jinx is stupid good at chess’

Chapter Text

An Enforcer slouches in her chair, chin resting lazily against a fist and hat nearly toppling off her head at this angle. All the life in her sapphire eyes has been extinguished. In its place sits a soul crushing resignation, stemming from the slightly melodramatic desire to thoroughly demolish Jinx at something. Anything. This Enforcer picked chess, because chess was harmless and intellectual. It was a game for people like herself- obsessive planners, people who liked to think several steps ahead. Jinx would falter miserably. That woman never thought beyond the next breath and surely a mentally compromised criminal couldn’t be as strategic as the Kiramman heir.

Anyways. Chess. What a fucking mistake that was.

In Caitlyn’s defence, she never thought Jinx was stupid. She just thought of Jinx as sort of a Mayhem Savant, only exceptionally skilled in that particular thing. Which she just so happened to make her entire life revolve around. Chaos.

Unfortunately, this resulted in Caitlyn thinking Jinx couldn’t possibly be THAT talented in other areas. Which had the chain reaction of leading to her current predicament, sitting in front of a holding cell, playing chess with Jinx and losing by a shameful margin.

“Hat Lady! Bishop, B2 to E5!”

The reason Caitlyn had to move both their pieces was simple. She couldn’t get within five meters of the bars to Jinx’s cell, nobody was allowed to given how dangerous the woman proved to be. So the chess set was on the table in front of Caitlyn, and Jinx was leaning against her cell bars with a lazy smile, watching the board from afar, blowing bubbles with her pink gum.

It was a necessary precaution that the Enforcer herself insisted on. But it sure felt like being forced to dig her own grave.

“Hey Hat Lady?~”

Caitlyn lifted her eyes from the somber battlefield of their chess board and looked Jinx in the eyes. Thinking maybe, possibly, if she saw how defeated she felt-

Then Jinx blew her a kiss. She winked. And proceeded to cackle maniacally as she said ‘Queen to F5’ and ‘Checkmate’ and ‘You suck at chess Caitlyn’.

She couldn’t tell if the blush was from embarrassment or something else. Probably both.
