Work Text:
It’s three sentences. Three freaking sentences and Simone is crying. Simone doesn’t cry often, it’s something she prides herself in. But these three sentences that Harmony wrote made her cry, more than she has in a while.
‘You were my best friend in Millwood, and I screwed up. I never stopped screwing up with you. I’m sorry.’
They’re not even that deep. It’s just an apology. Yet now all the memories with Harmony are replaying in her head. The good, the bad. The dance recitals, the arguments, the apologies. And she’s crying again. Twice, Simone’s cried twice over this letter and she needs to stop because this letter is nothing but a three sentence apology from someone who ghosted her and put her through hell and back. Someone who didn’t care enough to try.
“I really hurt you, and I couldn’t find a way to make it better. So, it just kept getting worse and worse, like when you bite your cheek and you keep biting it”
“The whole time I was just waiting for you to say sorry, and you left Millwood and never said it”. Not true, sure she wanted a sorry, but she also wanted everything to go back to the way it was. The coming of age movies and face masks and coming up with new ways to make ice cream even more sugary than it should be. She wanted to be Harmony’s best friend again, but she’d already been replaced.
“I guess if I said sorry, it would make me realize how much I screwed up with you. But i’m sorry now. I really am.”
“You’re forgiven,” Simone says. She doesn’t know when she decided that she was okay with not being Harmony’s best friend anymore, but at some point she must have. Or maybe it was the fear of losing Harmony and being ghosted all over again. Either way, she hugs Harmony. Things aren’t necessarily back to the way it used to be, (it’ll take a while to get back to all nighters and dance parties) and it probably won’t be anytime soon with how far away Harmony’s moving. But it's a start and Simone can work with that.
