Lavender's Blue

Summary:

Diana hears someone singing in the garden.

Notes:

This was something I just made up on the spot for these two.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Diana was so glad to get away from that disgusting sod of a headmaster! If he can be even called that......

She quickened her steps, as if putting distance between the door to Hoffman's bedroom and seemly endless hallway she has to traverse to and fro from the dormitory. Especially when having to go down and then back up the stairs after he was done having "private talks" with her.

Her mouth curved into a frown of disgust as she realized it's very likely that he'll call her up to his room later in the afternoon.

She almost hoped that Hoffman would call some other kid instead of her.

It only after a slight warmth on her skin that Diana also realized that her feet lead her outside of the orphanage where she hasn't meant to do so. On the other hand— she doesn't think she will have the energy to toy around with Meg or even play with the other Aristocrats.

She might take a nap somewhere where no one would bother her. A bit risky but find herself to care at the moment.

She sighs loudly, continuing to let her feet wander into the inner court and walked up to the entrance of the rose garden that's long abandoned when—

"Lavender's blue, dilly, dilly~!"

"Lavender's green, when I am king, dilly, dilly~!"

"You shall be queen~!"

There was someone in the garden. Diana thought, she couldn't for the life of her point out who is the one singing, their voice is clean with such clarity and coherence.

It's so familiar.... yet unfamiliar at the same time. She strains her ears while venturing deeper into the abandoned garden.

The more she trailed into deepest parts of the garden, the more louder singing got.

"Who told you so, dilly, dilly~!"

"Who told you so~?"

"'Twas mine own heart, dilly, dilly~!"

"That told me so~!"

As she carefully treads along while passing by many rows of roses. Diana had noticed that it doesn't seem to have a unkempt appearance anymore. In fact. The shrubbery that was once overgrown and ungroomed is now cut and trimmed to a perfect shape.

She wonder if the one singing is also the one that has been tending to the garden.

After what seemed like forever for her, she finally sees the opening path to the center of the garden and nearly run to it.

But then she realize that the one singing might get startled Diana stilled herself to walk quietly towards the opening. Slowly looking around the shrub to see who it is.

Her brain screeched to a half.

"Jennifer!?" She whispers harshly under her breath.

There near a array of newly watered roses was the pitiful and sad Jennifer— who now looks like the happiest girl in this wretched place right now with an almost dazzling smile on her face.

Something twisted violently in her stomach at the sight.

A feeling of ickniess pooling within her body, a revolting sensation squeezing around her chest when she sees Jennifer's bright blue eyes sparkling as she picks a rose that perfectly bloomed from among the rest.

"Roses are red, dilly, dilly~!" She sings once more. Skipping and jumping along in her own little world.

As if she has forgotten what kind of place the orphanage is.

"Because you love me, dilly, dilly~!"

"I will love you~!

At this point Diana wants to run away after knowing who's been singing in the rose garden.

To the orphanage's bathroom and puke out the strange awfulness in her guts while plucking her ears of the blasted singing from Jennifer.

Except....

She slowly looks away from Jennifer, sliding down the greenery behind her back and onto the grass.

Her skirt almost rided up from that but ignores it in exchange to keep the nauseating feeling in her stomach caused by that brat's singing.

How does that stupid girl smile on without a care?

How come she looks so unreal right there? Almost like a different person altogether when she's not around the aristocrat's club....?

How come those usually dull eyes suddenly shine with such a blue hue.....

"Roses are red, dilly, dilly~!

"Violets are blue~!

"Because you love me, dilly, dilly~!

"I will love you~!

Diana decided she hates the song (and hates Jennifer even more), jumping up from the grass and running back to the entrance of the garden.

Poor Jennifer was none the wiser, still singing to her heart's content while she is making a bouquet of roses, not knowing that a unfair punishment is awaiting for her later.
