Work Text:
Momo sat quietly at her desk waiting for the other students to finish their tests. As top of her class it was only natural for her to finish first, expecting a perfect “100%” to be written at the top of the paper by the next time she’d see it.
She stared at the clock for lord knew how long before Kaminari handed in his test last, though there was not too much of a surprise there. “Alright we only have about ten minutes left of class so you can have some free time, just stay quiet.” Aizawa mumbled before zipping himself back into his yellow sleeping bag and falling to the floor. Momo was surprised at his exit but nonetheless didn’t mind a little time off every now and then.
She had pulled out her notebook, intending to finish highlighting her notes from her last class. Until, of course, a small paper circle landed on her desk. Shocked at the new object, she picked it up, only to be met with a “hey!” Momo looked up, seeing her girlfriend standing in front of her desk proudly. “D’ya like it?” The small girl smiled, motioning to the object tossed on the desk.
Upon further inspection Momo was able to make out that the paper that had been thrown onto her desk was folded into the shape of a ring. Momo slid it onto her finger, smiling at how well it fit, “it’s lovely, Kyo.”
The latter’s face turned entirely red at the sound of the nickname, and Momo could only giggle. “How’d you make it?“ she asked curiously, looking at the ring much more closely now. Making out each bend and crease that Jirou had created.
“I, uh… I could teach you.” The hearing-hero fumbled, recovering from the flustered state her girlfriend had just put her into. She pulled an abandoned chair from the desk across from them to sit down, taking two small sheets of paper out from her pocket. “I learned how to do it last night and I haven’t stopped since.”
Momo stared at the light blue paper Jirou had handed her, then back to the red ring that had been dropped on her desk a minute before. “You turned this singular piece of paper into that?” She questioned.
“Yeah, but it took a while to get it,” Jirou shrugged, “But it’s pretty easy once you get the hang of it.” She looked at her own darker blue paper. “So first you’re gonna want to fold it in half this way.”
Momo followed each instruction carefully, closely watching Jirou’s each and every fold with careful eyes, yet by the time she had finished, her ring was much less put together than Jirou’s. She frowned at her “less-than-satisfactory” finished product. Jirou placed her hand on top of Momo’s,
“I think it looks pretty good! Already better than my first try, I went through at least six different paper’s before I was able to finish one.” She reached out to take the ring only for Momo to pull it away,
“No, I can’t possibly give you this one, I’ll give you a nicer one!” She smiled. Jirou let out a small laugh, handing her girlfriend the rest of her colorful papers,
“Go crazy, I have more paper in my room if you run out.”
Momo had spent the rest of the school day trying to figure out how to fold those papers properly. Her focus thrown off during training, causing her to receive a few more scratches than usual, but nothing that would stop her paper-folding abilities.
The creator had practically run to her room once class let out at the end of the day. Immediately sitting herself at her desk, creating some extra paper, and going back to work. She had gone through at least ten other rings before she had gotten the hang of it. Though none of them were good enough to give to Jirou, at least she didn’t think so.
To her, Jirou deserved the best ring she could possibly make and nothing less, so she would have to keep trying, despite how many paper cuts she had gotten.
Momo had skipped joining everyone for dinner that night, Jirou had dropped her dinner off outside her door, and had completely disregarded any homework she was given. She could worry about the assignments later, they were all easy and could be done within seconds. For this one moment, nothing else mattered but making Jirou the perfect paper ring.
Piles of both folded and unfolded light blue paper collected in small piles around her desk and the floor surrounding. Some had been given up on after the first fold, and others were completely finished but nowhere near what Momo thought was perfect. By the time she was finally able to fold the perfect paper ring, it was around 4am, which was way past her usual bedtime.
Though, Momo still saw her time as well spent. The young hero smiled down at the finished ring. Each fold and crease was as perfect as she wanted them to be. She picked up a small pink pen from her pencil holder on her desk and carefully wrote a small “M + J” on the inside of the band.
Momo had gotten up late that morning. Rushing to get ready, giving up on her usual ponytail and rushing to grab herself a small granola bar for breakfast before rushing to catch Jirou, who, per usual, would be waiting on a bench outside of UA for Momo, so they could walk to class together like they did every morning.
The creator caught sight of the much smaller hero who was playing on her phone, definitely having something playing through the headphones she always wore. She smiled walking up to her girlfriend, the small ring held carefully in her hand.
Jirou looked up at the sight of the other girl approaching her, “Momo, how are you feeling, you didn’t come down for breakfast this morning–” she began, cutting herself off when she saw her girlfriend get down onto one knee, her face heating up at the action.
Momo presented the ring to her girlfriend, smiling proudly, “I did it!” Jirou opened her mouth to respond, only for her voice to be replaced with that of Kaminari’s,
“Woah, Yaomomo, proposing already I see!” He teased, walking past them before Jirou could hit him with her earphone jacks.
“I am not proposing!” Momo yelled back in response. Turning her focus back to the other hero, she continued, “It’s for you!” She smiled, slipping the ring onto Jirou’s finger, who was still blushing wildly at Kaminari’s comment.
She shook her head slightly, turning her focus to the light blue ring Momo had slipped onto her finger. Her heart practically melted at the thought of how much effort Momo had put into something as small as a paper ring, “it’s perfect.” She began, “and for what it’s worth, I would marry you with a paper ring.”
Momo’s cheeks turned pink, “you’d marry me?”
“No!– I mean yes!– I, shit, I mean, not right now but yes!” Jirou looked down at the ring, as to not continue to make a fool of herself. Momo lifted her chin gently, placing a small kiss to her lips before speaking,
“I’d marry you too, not now, but in the future.” She smiled, taking Jirou’s ring hand with her free one, “we should get to class, before Kaminari tells everyone we’re engaged.” Jirou laughed, intertwining their fingers, as they walked to class, perfect paper rings intact.
