Chapter Text
Walking up to the receptionist’s desk, you lightly sniff the air with curiosity.
“Hey Wanda, is it me or does it smell like ‘updog’ in here?”
“What’s ‘updog’?”
“Nothing much, what’s up with you?”
You smile as you see the gears turn in her head as she understands your joke, and you’re mesmerised by the smile and chuckle she lets out, muttering a ‘you’re so dumb’ under her breath.
This is your favourite part of the day. Walking into the office and seeing Wanda at the desk, ready to give her your best joke of the day to make her smile and put her in a better mood for the rest of the day.
“Hey, hey, what’s so funny?”
You bubble is soon burst as your boss, Tony Stark, walks into the office, seeing the both of you giggling with each other.
This is one of your lesser favourite parts of the day. Your boss likes to think himself as a bit of a comedian, so you ready yourself to hear the joke another good 7 or 8 times in the next few hours.
“Oh nothing, we were just thinking it kinda smelled like ‘updog’ in here,”
“’Updog’? What’s ‘updog’?”
“Nothing much, what’s up with you?” You say to him, cracking another smile. As lame as the joke is, it’s still kinda funny.
“Ahhh, I get it, that’s a good one, I’m gonna use that one,” he says with a chuckle, giving a quick scan of the office to see who’s already in.
His eyes settle on Steve, setting up his workspace for the day, and he quickly rushes over,
“Hey Steve, do you think it smells like ‘updog’ in here?”
“What’s that?” Steve asks in confusion.
“’Updog, do you think it smells like it?”
“I don’t know what you mean?”
“What, what means?”
“Whatever you just said, I don’t know what it is, is it bad?”
“Forget it,” Tony says frustratedly, looking around the office for another victim.
Seeing Jarvis sat in accounting, he rushes over to give the joke another shot,
“Jarvis, do you think it smells a little ‘updog’ in here today?”
“’Updog?’ What is that?”
“Nothing much... No forget it,” Tony quickly interrupts himself as he realises Jarvis is the worst candidate for jokes.
Looking around the office once again, he sees Sam walking through the door. Rushing down, he pushes you out of the way slightly, making you lean into Wanda’s desk, giving her an incredulous look as she giggles at you.
“Hey Sam, do you think it smells like ‘updog’ in here this morning?”
“What’s ‘updog’?” Sam asks, finally giving Tony the response he wanted.
“Yes! … No! Shit! Nothing much, what’s up with you?”
“What?” Sam replies, his face scrunched up in confusion.
You look at Tony with a flat smile, your eyebrows raised, as he realises he just ruined the joke for himself.
“You know what, forget it, I’ve got a busy morning,” Tony sulks as he walks into his office, slamming the door behind him.
“Is he alright?” Sam asks you, still perplexed by the conversation which just happened.
“Inside joke, Sam, you wouldn’t get it,” you tell him, patting his back and guiding him toward his desk as you sit down at yours.
“It was a good joke,” Wanda tells you over her desk.
“Thank you Maximoff, it’s all about the delivery,”
She gives you one last smile before turning her attention back to her computer and taking phone calls, and, as with most mornings, you continue to look for just a few seconds longer before diving into your work for the day.
