Grease

Chapter One.

Leah turned the page in her book, digging her toes further into the sand. As the waves crashed around her. It had been an uneventful summer so far, so much so. She had nearly finished her summer reading list. She did not appreciate having water shook all over her.

She was just about to open her mouth to yell at whoever had done it. She looked up to find a golden retriever, wagging its fluffy tail. Dropping a very wet tennis ball at her feet.

All the anger left her, “Sorry!” A voice yelled from the waters edge. She looked over to see a girl walking over to her. Wearing tiny shorts and a bikini top, covered by an open button down. As she reached Leah, she reached down to ruffle the dog's ears. “Eddy gets a bit over excited” Eddy woofed in response.

Leah smiled “that’s ok” the girl smiled in response “what’s your name?”

“Leah,” the girl nodded. “Well you know Eddy, I’m Fatin” she held out her hand for Leah to shake. Leah shook Fatin’s hand, for a little too long according to Eddy. Who started barking again, before taking off into the waves.

They both laughed as he jumped in the sea, barking and chasing the waves. Fatin turned to chase after him. She got a few steps away, when Leah noticed the tennis ball still by her foot.

She scooped it up, ignoring the soggy feeling. “Fatin!” She shouted and Fatin turned at the sound of her name. She smiled as she saw Leah holding the ball up, with a coy smile. Fatin retraced her steps, taking the ball. “Thanks I’ll see you later?” Leah nodded. Watching Eddy stop and bark, once he noticed Fatin wasn’t chasing after him.

She winked at Leah. Before throwing the ball, and chasing after Eddy.

The next day, Leah was standing at the small beach kiosk. Fully intent on grabbing a coffee, before heading down onto the beach. She was nearly finished with her current book. As she accepted her coffee, from the guy who seemed a little distracted. By something or someone behind Leah.

She scowled as she took her change, sliding it into the back pocket of her Jean shorts. As she turned she could see what the guy had been staring at. Fatin was leaning against the railing, Eddy barking at her heels. Leah suddenly felt self conscious, the guy had clearly been staring at Fatin.

But she was sure this wasn’t true, it seemed Fatin had been staring at her. “Morning” Leah greeted as she reached Fatin. Eddy, on noticing Leah, quickly rushed to greet her. Which caused Fatin to laugh, “He seems to like you” Leah shrugged “That guy was staring at you” She pointed behind her, at the beach kiosk.

Fatin shrugged “He’s got good taste” she tapped Leah on the shoulder and winked. Which caused Leah to blush, “No I meant” she stammered. Fatin ignored this, and led them onto the beach. Eddy took off on seeing a black Labrador, chasing a ball further down the beach.

“Remember you manors Ed!” Fatin shouted after him. Leah laughed as she walked with Fatin. Suddenly reading her book had become the last thing on her mind.

Running and playing with Ed just came naturally. She would throw the ball, he would chase after it. With Fatin chasing after him, into the sea. Attempting to get to the ball before him. Leah found herself staring, as Fatin walked out of the sea. Her clothes now wet from the ocean.

On reaching her, Fatin clicked her fingers. “Something you like?” She said aid with a wink. Leah stuttered again. She was sure Fatin enjoyed making her stutter and blush. Their moment was interrupted, by Ed crashing into them. Sending a spray of cold water over both of them.

He took off again, with Fatin chasing after him.

The next day, Leah didn’t get to the beach till late. Almost sunset, her parents had asked her why she was going to the beach so late. She had shrugged and said “fresh airs good for me”

She wasn’t going to say “oh to hang out with this super cute girl, and her dog” she sat down on the bench. Wishing she had grabbed a jacket before she left. When Fatin sat next to her. “Well hello there” a voice she had come to crave muttered in her ear. Leah grinned

“You’re late” Leah replied Fatin laughed “I could say the same about you. Ed’s had his walk” Her words had more weight to them than they should have done. In fact they held a lot of promise. “So you have my full attention” This made Leah blush.

“Is that a fact?” She stood up. “Doesn’t mean you have mine!” Leah took off at a sprint heading for the waves. She didn’t have to look behind her to know, Fatin was chasing after her. Finally catching up to her in the shallow water, both hands catching hold of her waist.

She turned in Fatin’s grip, both laughing their heads off. As the waves crashed, Leah felt a lot braver than she had. The last few days, she put one hand on Fatin’s shoulder. The other on Fatin’s cheek, she gently brushed her lips against Fatin’s. Pulling back slightly, expecting the girl to run.

But she didn’t, she felt Fatin’s grip tighten. Bringing her closer, deepening their kiss.

Yeah maybe the beach wasn’t so bad, after all.

The new school year didn’t mean much to Fatin. Another year of being the centre of attention. She didn’t mind, as she shut the door to her Porsche. Catching sight of her best friends.

Toni Was captain of the basketball team, general badass and sounding board. Then there was Dorothy as Fatin called her. She preferred Dot, but had stopped correcting Fatin about it.

“Good summer?” Dot asked as she caught up with them. “Spent most of it at the beach,” Fatin replied with a shrug. “Oh yeah, with that girl who you wouldn’t shut up about” Toni chimes in.

“What was her name?” Fatin held her hand up. “It doesn’t matter, she’s gone back to her school. Summers over” Toni rolled her eyes, “Didn’t you get her number?” Fatin shook her head.

“It was a summer fling that’s all” Dot didn’t look convinced. Thankfully Toni had been distracted by the passing cheerleaders. “Don’t tell me you finally tapped that?” Fatin said loudly. Shaking Toni out of her trance. “Shut up” They argued all the way to 1st period.

Leah hated being the new kid. She was standing awkwardly in reception, waiting for her schedule. “Miss Rilke,” Principal Dawkins said from behind her. She nodded and he handed her a schedule. “This is Rachel” At her name Rachel raised her eyebrow. “She’s going to be showing you round” It didn’t sound like she’d offered to do this, but it was some form of punishment.

As she got her lunch in the cafeteria. Here was another reason why she hated being the new kid. Rachel had joined her friends, which surprisingly looked like the cheerleaders. She was just about to sit down at a vacant table. When a head of blonde hair obscured her vision.

“Welcome!” She said this very loudly “I’m Shelby, and you must be Leah” Leah had opened her mouth to ask how she knew that. But Shelby had already sat next to her. Before she could realise, the table had filled.

Some names she could remember, Martha Kind intelligent and a great animal lover. She knew Rachel of course, from looking at the back of her head. For most of the morning.

“So Leah, what did you do this summer?” Martha asked. Leah shrugged “I spent most of it at the beach. Met this girl there Fatin.” Rachel’s ears pricked up. She shared a look with Shelby. Leah didn’t miss this. “What?” She asked.

Rachel grabbed her hand and led her out to the courtyard. Closely followed by Martha and Shelby. “Hey Jadmani” Fatin was sitting on one of the picnic tables, stealing fries from Dot’s plate. She turned at the sound of her name.

“What do you want now?” She said with Roll of her eyes. “Look who’s here” she pushed Leah forwards. Fatin’s eyes went wide. “Leah?” she said, choking on her fries. “Fatin” Leah looked as shocked as Fatin did.

“I thought you went home,” Fatin said standing up. “Dad got a new job” she replied with a shrug. “That’s cool” it was like someone flipped a switch. Fatin remembered where she was. “See you around” she sat back down. Leah swallowed. Before turning on her heel and leaving.

Fatin reached for the fries. Dot swatted her hand away. “So that was Leah, the girl you’ve been seeing all summer. Who you have not shut up about. She now goes to this school. She was here, standing right in front of you. Instead of I don’t know, showing some form of affection. You act like a huge dick.”

Yep that pretty much summed up, how that exchange had gone.
