Summary:

Wanda does what Y/N can’t.

Notes:

Day 6 Lights

Work Text:

“Oh come on, Tony! It’s just a few lights! It’ll look so pretty,” you pleaded for the fifth time today. He gave you an annoyed glare before responding, “Nope. Don’t need ‘em, won’t get 'em.” You groan and reply, “Fine. We don’t need them. But think of how pretty they’ll look, and the christmas spirit will boost team morale. I promise I’ll leave your lab alone, just the common room, the lobby, and a few of the balconies. Pretty please?” You bat your eyelashes desperately until he shakes his head and walks away, leaving you alone in the common room. Flopping onto the couch, you release another dejected sigh just as FRIDAY’s disembodied voice begins speaking. “Ms. Y/L/N. Captain Rogers has requested your presence in the conference room for a briefing. Room 61A.”

You get up quickly and make your way to the elevator as you respond, “Sure thing, FRI. Let him know I’m on my way, ETA 2 minutes.” When you get to the conference room, you push the door open to reveal Steve and Maria looking through a file with blueprints spread before them, clearly talking strategy. “You called, what’s up?” you ask, closing the door behind you. Looking up, they greet you and Maria hands you the file. “Found a mission,” she starts, “An abandoned warehouse outside of Baton Rouge, Louisiana has some important intel hidden there. We think it’s Hydra, but it may be disguised as SHIELD.” After they fill you in, the three of you come up with a strategy for collecting the intel. Almost two hours later, you close the file confidently and bid the two farwell, eager to rest and prepare for the mission.

The next morning, you board the quinjet in uniform and armed, ready to complete the mission. The plan is to drop just over a mile from the warehouse, trek through the woodlands until you get to the base then disconnect any security systems without setting off any alarms, collect the intel, erase the hard drives, and return to the jet. The flight is only three hours long and smooth, as a (former) SHIELD agent pilots the jet toward your destination. Once the jet is safely on the ground, you begin the journey, entirely focused on the mission. And as expected, you complete the mission flawlessly, collecting all the intel you’d been sent for and then some and destroying any copies effectively. You make it back to the jet just as the sun is nearing the horizon, a little dirtier than before but in one piece.

With the intel secured and the jet once again enroute to the tower, you allow yourself to relax and take in the view, you watch the open plains give way to towns and cities which in turn fade to empty expanses of land, again and again, highways criss crossing the expanses and entwining with the cities along the way. As the sky darkens, the cities brighten, and you notice the colorful edges of suburbs decorated for the holidays. Sighing, you step away from the window. Everyone seems to be celebrating the season. You return to one of the jump seats and listen to the quiet hum of the jet flying.

As you near New York City, the agent calls back to you. “Ms. Y/L/N, you may want to see this.” Confused, you near the cockpit to see the city you’d grown to call home, lit as it always is even in the dead of night, illuminated even brighter with the festive lights hung throughout the city. You gasp, as you catch sight of your home, Stark Tower, lit up like a christmas tree. A smile spreads across your face, and you feel the burn of tears filling your eyes, as you take in the sight. Each floor is lit. Even the giant A is outlined with colorful lights. The jet lands, and you’re greeted with Tony and Steve as soon as you step onto the concrete.

“I thought you said no,” you tease, still in awe, as you approach the two avengers. He smirks and shrugs before responding, “Wanda. She has better puppy dog eyes.” You laugh and pull him into a hug. He returns it hesitantly before stepping away and letting Steve greet you. “Glad to have you back, Y/N. Let’s debrief before you get lost in the lights,” he teases and nods toward the exit of the hangar. Following his lead, you head toward a conference room where another agent is waiting. You debrief and go through the intel you’d collected quickly. Only an hour later, you’re free and wandering the halls aimlessly, searching for Wanda. You make it to the common room and stop to take in the decor. Natasha and Clint are laying on the couch, watching some game show when you approach them.

“Roof,” is all Natasha says before you even have a chance to say anything. You smile and let out a quick “thanks” before rushing back to the elevator and asking FRIDAY to take you to the roof. A moment later, the doors slide open revealing Wanda’s garden glowing. She’d managed to make the special place even more beautiful and magical. When you’d all moved into the tower, Tony had given her this space. She grew the garden and practiced her magic up here alone. More recently, you’d been sneaking up her to sit with her on the hammock. That’s where you find her when you step out of the elevator. Slowly, you walk through the rows of different plants until you round the hammock. She keeps her gaze locked on the city, as you sit next to her.

“Tony said you did all this.” She just nods and looks down at her hands. “Thank you,” you mumble, taking her hand in yours slowly. Finally she meets your eyes and smiles. “No need to thank me, Y/N. I would do anything to see that smile.” You blush and glance over the city, listening to the quiet din of the streets far below as you take in the sight that always amazes you. Taking in the view, you relax into the hammock until you’re leaning against Wanda, almost on top of her. She wraps an arm around your shoulders and sighs contently, playing with your hair absently. You bring the hand still in yours to your lips, pressing a kiss against her knuckles gently. Maybe you’d never said it out loud, but in that moment, you know you are Wanda’s, and Wanda is yours.
