Chapter Text
Having received a note from Miss Stirling, stating that Farah was to receive an award from her teacher, Faye walked into the condo, dropping her school bag on the bench. ‘Hey Momma, Hey Mama.’ Faye greets, noting that Lucy and Kate are sitting on the couch. ‘Afternoon, Sweet Girl.’ Kate greets, turning around on the couch to look over at Faye. ‘Hey Bug, how was school?’ Lucy asks, getting off the couch to hug Faye. Hugging Mama back, Faye sets about unpacking her school bag, taking her lunch box out of her bag and setting her homework folder on the counter.
After doing her homework, Faye puts her homework away in her folder before pulling out the note from her folder. ‘I have a note from the school.’ Faye explains, holding the note out for Lucy and Kate who reach out for the note.
‘Dear Ms Whistler & Ms Tara.
I am writing to inform you that on Wednesday week, Farah will be receiving an award at our school assembly. Farah is receiving this award to acknowledge the fact that Farah has received straight A’s all year.
Sincerely, Miss Stirling.’
Kate read aloud, earning a cheer from Lucy. ‘That’s our girl! This is the last assembly of the year right?’ Lucy asks, pulling Faye into her arms. ‘Yes, Mama. Will you both be there?’ Faye asks, glancing over at Kate who nods. ‘I’ll talk to my boss but it shouldn't be a problem.’ Kate answers, earning a big smile from Faye. ‘Sounds good, Momma.’ Faye responds, earning a squeeze in return. ‘Which also reminds me, our class party is on the Thursday following the assembly.’ Faye adds, looking up at Kate. ‘What would you like to bring?’ Kate asks Faye while Lucy starts on dinner. ‘Banana choc chip bars?’ Faye asks, taking a seat on a stool. ‘I think we can make that happen.’ Kate answers before sending Faye off to have some time to herself.
The morning of the 25th, Faye wakes early in the morning, jumping into the shower. After pulling on a dress, the top white and the skirt denim with a brown belt, Faye pulls on a pair of brown cowgirl boots. Waking into the kitchen, Faye kisses Kate’s cheek and then Lucy’s. ‘Momma? Can you curl my hair today? Please?’ Faye asks, moving to sit on a stool at the counter as Kate slides a jar of peanut butter and jelly overnight oats. ‘I can, if you hurry up and eat.’ Kate offers, smiling at Faye, digs into her breakfast before jumping down from her stool and making her way into her bathroom. After brushing her teeth, Faye waits for Kate to join her, selecting a white lace bow. Kate joins Faye in the bathroom, running the brush through Faye’s hair before beginning to curl the brunette locks. Pulling the front section up, Kate ties her hair up before adding the bow. ‘Let’s get you to school.’ Kate states, kissing Faye’s cheek softly.
After grabbing her school bag and lunch box, Faye, Lucy and Kate make their way towards the school, parking next to Jane’s car. Noticing Ernie and Jesse’s cars, Faye smiles knowing that her new family came to support her.
Waving goodbye to Lucy and Kate, Faye runs off to her classroom, greeting each of her friends as she puts her bag away, unpacking what she needs for the day. ‘Okay class, it’s time to make our way towards the auditorium.’ Miss Stirling greets, allowing her class to form two lines. ‘Our Six Awardees upfront please.’ Miss Stirling adds, earning a smile from the six students moving forward. Walking into the auditorium, the students receiving awards sit to the side, waiting for the awards ceremony to begin.
After the first three grade awards have been handed out, Miss Stirling walks towards the front of the room. ‘My first award goes to Gareth Blackwell, due to his dedication to making sure his fellow peers were included in activities. Congratulations Gareth.’ Miss Stirling states, handing the award to the boy. Faye listens to the rest of her class's awards before her name is mentioned. ‘My last award goes to Farah Tara-Whistler. Farah here hasn’t had the easiest year, but despite the circumstances this year, Farah has managed to obtain straight A’s this year. Congratulations Farah, keep up the amazing work.’ Miss Stirling reads, shaking Faye’s hand before allowing the girl to join her classmates.
After being dismissed from the assembly, Faye and Julie make their way to their families. ‘Congratulations Farah and Julie.’ Everyone greets, wrapping the children in a group hug, before the two girls finally find their parents, handing their certificates over. ‘Pizza party at our house, Thursday night, to celebrate the ending of the school year and these two awards.’ Jane calls over everyone. ‘You two can invite the girls you want from school.’ Jane adds, pointing to Faye and Julie who nod before dashing away to find their class.
