Chapter Text
The alarm was blaring and Maya did not want to leave her bed. It had been such a relaxing night in with her wife. One that they had desperately needed after working the insane hours that being a doctor and a firefighter require. She reached over to stop the annoying ringing before flipping over to look at her still sleeping wife. She was sound asleep and looked as beautiful as ever. Gently she placed a kiss on her forehead and headed for the shower before having to get ready for work.
She had been captain at 19 again for almost 3 months now, her confrontation with Ross sealing the deal. Beckett had been transferred to a different station. He was someone else's problem now. Her and Carina were still trying to get pregnant, the first two attempts having not been successful. She had both positives and negatives happening in her life but if her wife had taught her anything it was to make the most of every day.
After she had gotten out of the shower and changed, she went into the kitchen to make coffee for her and Carina. After a few minutes she felt arms wrap her from behind and a kiss on the cheek.
"Good morning Bambina," Carina whispered into her ear.
Maya turned around and placed a tender and loving kiss on her wife's lips. "Good morning beautiful," Maya said as she pulled away. "I wish we didn't have to go to work."
"Did my wife just say she didn't want to go to work?" Carina feigned shock.
Maya laughed as she poured two cups of coffee and they headed towards the kitchen table. They had made it a habit to enjoy a few moments whenever they could. Whether it was to just sit and talk or actually go out and do something. However, most of these moments happened over a cup of coffee.
"You have taught me a lot Dr. Deluca-Bishop. But the biggest lesson I have learned is to enjoy any time I have with you. And we had a lot of good times last night that bear repeating."
The two women spent the next fifteen minutes talking and enjoying every moment. They discussed work but mostly discussed the next insemination they had coming up, eager to try again, not letting the failures knock them down.
"Okay you need to hurry up and get ready and we can carpool to work, maybe take a detour," Maya stated as she gathered the dishes.
Carina got up and kissed her wife. "Si, anything for a few extra moments with you Bella."

They decided to take the scenic route since Carina had actually gotten ready quickly. It was through a wooded area that had an overlook where the two women often went to so they could go on walks. It was also where they went when they discovered the failed attempts of conception. It was a soothing and healing place to them. For them it was a great place to start what they both felt would be a busy day.
As they pulled into the parking lot they saw another car which they were not expecting since it was a workday. They parked and decided to take the short walk to the overlook. When they came out from the woods they saw a very pregnant woman lying on the ground. Carina and Maya exchanged a look and raced to her side.
"Hi my name is Dr. Carina Deluca-Bishop. I'm going to take your pulse. Are you experiencing pain?" Carina reached for the woman's hand and began counting in her head, not wasting a minute.
The distressed woman was panting so much she was unable to acknowledge the married couple that had approached her with any verbal confirmation. She was only able to nod.
Maya noticed the bruises that were on her arms and face. She was clearly a victim of abuse and she knew Carina had noticed too. There was also an open wound that was bleeding fairly heavily on her shoulder.
"Maya can you go to the car and grab the first aid kit?" Carina asked, still assessing her now patient.
"On it," Maya said as she started walking away. "I'll call the station and get us the aid car."
She whipped out her phone and called in to Andy to let her know why she was late. She also told her to have Warren and Montgomery respond with the aid car to the call she was about to make to dispatch. When she reached the car she located the first aid kit and started back towards her wife. As she approached the spot she had left them she heard another voice. A man's voice. She slowed down and tried to be as quiet as possible while remaining hidden.
"Did you think you could run from me? That's supposedly my kid in there!"
Maya crouched behind a tree and looked towards the overview. What she saw terrified her.
Standing in front of her wife and the pregnant woman was a man wielding a gun pointing it directly at Carina.
Maya shifted her gaze over to her wife. If Carina was scared she wasn't showing the gunman. Instead, she kept trying to help the woman but the newcomer wasn't having it.
"DO NOT HELP HER!" He shouted as he took a step closer, waving the gun as he did so.
Carina was defiant. "If you want the baby to live I need to help her sir."
That set the gunman off more as he pounced towards the women, grabbed Carina by the arm, and dragged her away from the fallen woman. He pushed her towards the cliff's edge. Maya sprung into action and raced into view of the man.
"You need to get your hands off of my wife," she said as calmly as she could and approached with her hands in the air. Maya's eyes were solely on Carina as she spoke and for the first time she witnessed her fear as the gunman's attention and weapon turned towards the blonde.
The man sneered as he took two steps away from Carina. "And what are you going to do about it?" He placed both hands on the gun and steadied it towards Maya, clearly taking aim. That didn't stop Maya from inching forward, however.
"MAYA NO!" Carina shouted and drew the attention off of her wife as the gunman whipped around towards the doctor.
That was all Maya needed as she sprinted towards the man in hopes of tackling him, giving Carina time to get away. What she didn't expect was the man to turn back around as quickly as he did and fire his weapon as she was a few short feet away.
