Chapter Text
He had entered the room as always, through her window. Chrissy's parents were generally disapproving of Eddie, never mind what they were discussing.
With him, Eddie had brought a pregnancy test as Chrissy had confessed during their lunch break today that her period had been late for two weeks. He was sure it would be negative, they had always been careful as they were both painfully aware that this was the last thing they needed right now. 20 and 17 did not make for great ages to become parents, alongside from their personal family lives which made both extremely afraid of starting a family.
They were now sat on Chrissy's bed, opposite each other. It was still odd for her to see him in her room: the juxtaposition between him and her aggressively pink room was almost funny. They had been officially dating for just over six weeks, but given how close they felt, both could swear that they had met in a past life and had now finally reunited.
"Y'know whatever the result is you're in charge and I'll be happy with any decision, right?" He said as he swept a strawberry blonde lock behind her ear. Chrissy's worried gaze met his own. A tear fell from her blue eyes and he wiped it with his thumb, he put his arm behind her head and pulled her into his chest, where she continued to sob as he brushed her hair with his fingers.
It had been hard for her at first: breaking up with Jason, becoming a social outcast and going against every principle her mother had instilled in her. Despite how happy and free her relationship with Eddie was making her, it hurt the insecure people-pleaser inside her to see her life change so dramatically, even if in many cases it had been for the better.
Eddie's watch beeped, meaning that ten minutes had past and the test was ready. They looked at each other with wide eyes. They both didn't even know whether they wanted to know. After what felt like two days of intense staring, Chrissy whispered under her breath "you look, I can't". They both giggled. He kissed her temple and got up to walk to the desk where she had put the test.
He picked it up. She took a deep breath, staring at him to take in his reaction. He kept staring at the test.
"Eddie" she whispered in a broken sob to catch his attention. He leaped over to the bed to hand it to her, not yet knowing how to put his feelings into words. She looked and gasped - a soft "Oh" was the only thing that came out of her mouth as she covered it with her hand, perfectly manicured nails soon catching the heavy tears. She found herself once again immersed in Eddie's arms, both of them crying now.
Another good ten minutes went by. Then, she took a deep breath to gather her courage and looked up: "I think I want to keep it". She looked at him with pleading eyes, hoping that this would not come as too much of a shock to him. During the long two weeks of suspicion, Chrissy had been unable to shake off the idea of being a mother. Even if this wouldn't be the white picket fence scenario her mother had raised her to crave, she really couldn't wait to become a mum. The through did scare her - obviously - but she had come to find that she didn't want the picket fence and perfect lawn but rather she wanted the loving and supportive family she had always herself found missing. There were no academic ambitions this would be getting in the way of, after all, during the long years of dating Jason the plan had always been to get married and start a family straight after graduating. This was not far off the original plan after all. Kind of.
After she said those words, a smile came across Eddie's face, setting her mind somewhat at peace. He started to reassure her: saying how it's going to be fine because this year he was definitely graduating, how he had money saved up and ending with a "you know I will never leave you". He was kissing all over her face, muttering affirming words in between the kisses. She just sat there, taking it all in. He planted a last kiss on her mouth, after they were both shaken by the sounds of footsteps creeping on the staircase that led to Chrissy's bedroom.
"Shit" he said under his breath as he practically jumped off the bed and launched himself out of her window to hide in the shadows of the night. Chrissy grabbed whatever book was on her bedside table and tried to make herself look as normal as possible. The doorknob twisted just as they were both in the clear. Chrissy's mother, Laura, popped her head in the room. Chrissy was ready to roll her eyes internally at whatever degrading comment she was about to make about her. "Christine, after the potatoes tonight I'm hoping you're not thinking of skipping cheer practice tomorrow - again" she said in her usual tone. "If the other kids are giving you such a hard time after dumping Jason maybe you should have thought about the fact that this relationship was not just about your feelings, this is the consequence of your immature actions" she continued. Chrissy didn't want this to get to her, but it was practically inevitable. She apologised and her mother shut her door in her face, as always this was how their 'conversations' ended.
When she could hear that the floor was clear, she got up from the bed and walked to her window, sticking her head out and looking to the right where she knew he would be hiding. Eddie looked at her with hurt eyes, having witnessed a similar situation too many times for his liking. She grabbed his jaw and pulled him into a kiss, "night, my love" she said afterwards. "Goodnight, princess, I love you". She whispered it back before letting him go, suddenly feeling the emptiness of her room without him.
She fell back on her bed, lying down and putting her hands on her lower belly, brushing it with her thumbs. Her head was spinning with thoughts but a wide smile remained plastered on her face. She had an abnormally good feeling about this.
