Out of Sight Out of Mind

Summary:

Layla's heart almost lept to her throat at the confusion plastered on Steven's face. Why couldn't he...

Even if she didn't know, Steven's role as a non-memory holder in the system didn't change. And their mind would make sure to keep it that way.

Chapter Text

They were exhausted come the end of the whole "Harrow and the World Possibly Ending" situation. And they absolutely felt like it was time to head on out of this dark and quite oppressive temple.

Marc stepped back a bit once Khonshu released him from the suit's obligations to give himself a moment's breath; so currently, Steven has taken up the mantle of trucking their body back to… wherever Layla was planning on taking them.

She was very much not trusting Marc to take a proper break or not try to run as fast as he could out of here.

Steven felt right dizzy if he were honest, but he just wanted to get back to a bed as soon as possible than mention it.

They had already made it on out of the pyramid and its surrounding desert. His shaky legs were quite thankful they were now working their way through the town they had taken Harrow down in a couple of hours earlier.

Unable to contain his past growing excitement, Steven rambled on and on about how cool it was to have gone through these tombs and the bloody pyramid of Giza itself when he heard Layla inhale sharply and give a sad sound, her eyes bouncing around them.

And Steven was right confused by this, "What's wrong, Layla? Did you forget something?"

She stared at him as if he'd hit the wrong tree, "This is where we fought, Harrow… Do you… it just makes me sad seeing all these people like this…"

"People?..." Steven looked around, the town center surrounding them was quite empty he could assure himself, "there's a bit of rubble I see from our earlier fight, but it is quite sad seeing such a lovely town like this destroyed I must admit!

-an awkward, nervous chuckle-

Are you counting the decorative statues as people?..."

He blinked and Layla was giving him a strained smile before stiffly reminding them that they should keep moving on before daybreak caught them. Steven doesn't like being kept in the dark like this, but maybe it had something to do with no longer having special 'avatar' eyes or whatever?

Blimey, was he tired.

Layla couldn't help the way her chest tightened further when Marc's tired gaze met hers.

"He can't see them… I'll… I'll explain it later but…" his face grew strict, "Don't tell him."

She swallowed down her questions at the tell-tale signs of Steven being slipped back in. It hurt how confused he looked.

It hurt more making sure he didn't step on one of the dozens of corpses bleeding out onto the ground around them.
