You’d come to the Student Council Chamber expecting a group, but apparently you and Diavolo would be alone when you played the virtual reality game Levi was beta-testing. You saw no reason to object, and casually cast a spell to lock all the doors. Just in case.
The first time, when everyone had been playing, he’d said that there was no-one else he’d rather capture than you, but alas, there had been too much competition. It wasn’t always easy to get time alone with the Demon Prince, what with his schedule and the demon brothers always sniffing at your heels. You supposed they assumed this would be a group session as well, and had no intention of cluing them in that it wasn’t.
You chose different avatars this time. Diavolo looked adorable in his tank top and shorts, embellished red and white cap, and high top sneakers. You wondered if he’d chosen this hoping that you’d be distracted by his exposed shoulders and…oh, that chest…and perhaps mess up so he’d win? Joke was on him, though, because your avatar was also cute and hot, and you knew he’d be watching you just as closely as you played.
Inside the game, it was amazing how realistic it felt. You’d already learned from your nearly disastrous first experience that it didn’t simulate taste and smell, but in addition to sound and visuals, you could feel things. So Diavolo chose a race game on jetboards. The developers had gone easy on the unpleasant sensations, so even though you could fail and get “hurt,” it was more of just an awareness than actual pain - which made both of you quite brave as you got your balance and took off as fast as you could.
“I feel faster than the wind,” Diavolo shouted. “It’s amazing. Indescribable!”
The game animated your hair and clothes so it seemed completely as if the wind were whipping past you. It would have been perfect if it had blown Diavolo’s hat off, but you weren’t going to sweat the small stuff.
“It feels like we’re going so fast! I love it!” you yelled over to him.
He smiled at you. You smiled back. Yeah, you were checking each other out. Unabashedly.
He maneuvered his jet board closer to you and confessed that he was tempted to ditch the racing part and just enjoy flying next to you. You held out your hand as an answer. The way he looked at you when he took it made your heart pound. You crossed the finish line together, then your jetboards gently slowed and lowered you to the ground.
“If the game weren’t logging our time here, I might be tempted to play something completely different, but…” he shrugged and sighed.
“Well, let’s pick something a little dangerous for the next one. How does that sound?”
“It sounds wonderful, my little thrill-seeker.” He scrolled through the list on his Devil Watch, and found one called Laser Evader. “This one should get our hearts racing,” he said with a wink. He knew damn well that your heart was already racing plenty already.
He presented it as a team game, but you were pretty certain it was a competition. Nevertheless, the longer both of you avoided getting hit in each advancing wall of lasers, the longer the game would last.
It started off simple, with the number of lasers and the speed of their approach increasing as the game progressed. The two of you were calling out instructions to each other, successfully avoiding being hit all the way until the end. When you squeezed close together to avoid a trio of vertical lasers, you almost lost focus, but Diavolo brought you back when he saw the next set and told you what he thought would work.
It did, and if you hadn’t known better, you would have assumed that that vertical squeeze was just a warmup for this last. The only way Diavolo saw to evade the incoming laser array was to lie flat on the ground together as close and still as you could so you could fit in the tiny open space as it passed.
You were pretty certain that this was meant to eliminate all but one player, but saw no reason to argue, and you wrapped your arms tightly around Diavolo, entwined your legs, and pressed your cheek against his bare chest.
Damn. Even if the game didn’t provide odors or flavors, you were sorely tempted to take a lick. But all that would have to wait until the lasers had passed. Maybe longer. You hoped not.
You shut your eyes, wanting to pay attention to being held by the Demon Prince above anything else. You didn’t open them until he said, with a chuckle, “We made it through.” You flashed him a triumphant smile, and he squeezed you gently. “Part of me feels it’s not safe to let you go quite so soon, though…”
He let the sentence hang in the air.
“Well, you could always keep holding me…”
He raised one eyebrow. He was waiting for more.
“You could kiss me, too, if you wanted…”
He wanted. He kissed you. Even in the Cyberverse, it felt wonderful.
“I wouldn’t mind staying like this until we log out.” How did the developers manage to program a look like that? It was so hot, you felt as if you were melting.
You decided to pull out all the stops and take a chance.
“I wouldn’t mind logging out and doing this in the real world.”
You felt his hands move behind your back, and in an instant you were back at RAD. You took off the VR headset to see Diavolo bent over you already. He’d wasted no time, and demons were faster than humans by a lot.
The hunger in his eyes was even more intense in the real world than in the game. He didn’t touch you. Still, you could feel the heat from him. You’d been playing this game back and forth, hinting at desire, flirting without following through, gazing longingly until you had to look away. There were so many reasons not to act on your feelings, but right now, they seemed easy to forget.
“I absolutely adore you. You know that, right?” You nodded without breaking eye contact. “Perhaps it’s presumptuous, but I’d like to believe you feel the same about me.”
“I do, Diavolo. I’ve never felt this way about anyone else in my life.”
His body relaxed as he was flooded with relief and joy. He began to lower himself to kiss you - you knew he was going to kiss you, for real this time, but there was a sudden pounding on the door.
“My Lord, it is imperative that you unlock this door and come with me to address an urgent situation.”
You both sighed. You lifted the spell that locked the doors as you both stood and composed yourselves.
“Young Master, someone substituted an ingredient in a potion in Professor Kudon’s Advanced Hexes and Curses class, and most of the students were transformed into goats. Lucifer and Satan are helping to reverse it, but it must be investigated, and disciplinary action taken. Your presence is needed.”
“Please wait outside the door, Barbatos. I will be there in a moment.”
He turned to you with a wry grin. “I suppose there is nothing to be done but for us to arrange an official date for later, someplace elegant, private, and secret, where we won’t be interrupted.”
“That seems to be the most logical course of action, Diavolo.”
“Then I will call you later tonight and we shall arrange the details. And I promise you…it will be marvelous.”
He gave you the briefest, softest, most inspiring kiss, and you felt as if your heart would explode from your chest. He smiled before he left as if to tell you it felt the same to him.
_________
When you got home, you made sure to tell Levi that this game of his was the best thing ever and thank him effusively for introducing you to it, without telling him why. You needed to get to your room and close the door, because you were going to be getting a call from Diavolo later, and now that you didn’t have to hold back, you intended to tell him things you didn’t want anyone else to overhear.
