Letter To A Once Lover

Summary:

Do you ever wonder how things could have been?

You, me, and everyone at our feet.

A world of freedom, a world of justice, where we could destroy everything that made us seem so different, when really, we’re just two sides of the same coin, a coin thrown to the ground, a dirty, disgusting side laying on the mud, and the other, shining of the purest shade of gold, so perfect, so innocent, even.

But, in a way, the dirty side is worth as much as the shining one, the coin is still the same, we are still the same, when the disgust is a cover for purity, and the shining is still, still, tinted with mud, where do we really stand, in all of this?

Where do you stand, Hawks?

Work Text:

You, oh, you, you’ve changed so much, what did you do to your hair? Your long, shining ashes cut so short they barely resemble what you once were, is this a life-changing action? Or maybe…

Wait, did I burn that much of your hair?

Oh dear, oh dear, I could laugh if you weren't so pathetic, dear little Heroine, did I accidentally give you the hope of a new life, love?

You, wingless and with your shorter hair, what, did you think you'd be different, if you looked different?

Did you think everything you did would just disappear, if you turned vigilante, if you killed the President and came begging to me to give you a place to belong?

Did you really think it would be that simple?

Because, you know, your little corruption arc doesn't mean shit.

It doesn't mean shit, birdie.

Just because you now recognize the truth about a Society long gone, a Society you helped build and sustain, doesn't mean that you shouldn’t pay the consequences of what you did us, to Twice, to the League.

To me.

Do you ever wonder how things could have been, Hawks?

You, me, and everyone at our feet.

It could have been so… beautiful, don't you think?

Just us, you know? I’m a General, I have a pretty powerful quirk, I could have been rich, we could have been together in that way we’ve always dreamt about, no Heroes in search of us, no Commission abusing you and your mind, healing, calm, happy.

Oh, how beautiful it could have been, don't you think?

But no.

No, you had to ruin everything with your stupid games, trying to be something you've never been, I mean, just look at yourself, all your life had been conditioned by choices made by anyone other than you, and you’ve been in that limbo for so long you don't know any better but to think like them.

Couldn't you, just once, choose for yourself?

For us.

Did any of what we had really mean anything to you?

And don't lie, pretty bird, I know when you lie.

But, you know, you lost your chance, I am so sorry, there’s not much you can do now.

I just hope you’ll appreciate my flames, when the time comes.

I just hope you’ll be able to feel at least a frangent of my anger.

I hope you’ll feel guilty, actually feel so guilty to beg me to burn you and your sins.

Wish for a life in the afterlife, Yuna.

Because your life on this Earth is done.

It's been a pleasure knowing you.

I won't miss you.
