Heartaches by the Number

Summary:

I've decided to start writing a short ficlet series of my Lone Wanderer and their romantic endeavors in the wasteland, starting with Bittercup. Since these stories already live in my head, I figured I might as well share them as a kind of writing practice.

Notes:

Jude is a he/they enby and I've marked this as both F/F and F/M on the basis that he partners with both lesbians and straight women, and regards those relationships with the use of whichever label.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Jude's Broken-Hearted Rebound

Chapter Text

The only girl he'd ever been with was Amata and he was heartbroken over his belief that she could have done more to prevent his assault and expatriation, or even that she could have chosen to leave with him instead of softly ally-ing herself to the man who had ordered his death.

When he met Bittercup, she seemed childish, but pretty, and he could somewhat peg the kind of girl that she was given her descriptions of previous relationships. Yet she, strangely enough, was the first person that he opened up to about what had gone down in the vault and how broken and betrayed he felt by Amata.

She had been his best, and only, friend growing up. All the other kids in the vault pushed him aside and tormented him due to his inherently non-conformative nature. Her ally-ship as a neutral party helped create some buffer from the harassment and, over time, their relationship naturally slipped into something deeper than friendship. They began their relationship in secrecy under the pretense that Amata's overly protective father, the overseer, already had antagonistic inclinations towards the young boy.

Though he was not fully aware of it until after the events of "Trouble on the Homestead," when he finally pieced it together: Amata's primary motivation behind the secrecy was actually the shame of being associated with a social pariah such as himself.

Upon hearing the tragic tale, the flitty, morose young girl was immediately taken with him and endeavored to make him her next sweetheart. With the softness of her words and her bosom, she reeled him in and secured him as her longest-yet romantic partner by a record breaking six day extension.

Astonishly however, he was the one who left her longing in his absence rather than the other way around — she was his rebound after all.

They never officially broke it off, but Jude's aloof nature and frequent travels out of the area left her floating around Big Town even more dismally than usual. She would often break-up with him theatrically in front of the other residence as he began heading for the bridge to leave again, only to reconcile with him again the next time he passed through town. He never felt quite the same attachment to her that she did, but he did appreciate her comforting words and "inviting presence."
