Robin couldn’t handle it anymore. She was sitting in the basement of the Wheeler household, hand wrapped loosely around Nancy’s. The buzzing in her ears was getting too much, her brain feeling like a warped vinyl on a record player as her breathing became labored. She pulled her hand away suddenly and pressed them tightly over her ears, squeezing her eyes shut. Nancy shut off the movie and turned to her girlfriend, trying to pry her hands away from her ears so she could remove her aids.
“Robin, honey,” she spoke softly, “let me take off your hearing aids.” Robin hesitantly obliged, her eyes still shut trying to block out any remaining stimuli. Nancy gently turned off the system and removed them from her ears. The taller girl whimpered under her touch, bringing her knees up to her chest and rocking back and forth on the carpeted floor. She hummed, feeling the fluttering vibrations in her chest slowly grounding her. Nancy waited patiently as Robin self soothed.
Twenty minutes pass before Robin looks up from between her legs with bleary eyes, big doe eyes landing on Nancy. The small girl smiled, scooting to sit beside her. Touch? Nancy signed. Robin nodded and Nancy took her into her arms, squeezing her lightly. The taller girl melted into the hug, putting her hands together to sign more. Nancy moved to slide into Robin’s lap, pressing all of her body weight onto her and rocking lazily. She could feel Robin’s heartbeat begin to slow as her breathing steadied, rubbing circles into the small of her back for a period of time before Robin taps twice on Nancy’s neck. Nancy sat up to look at her girlfriend below, eyes still bloodshot and cheeks tear stained. Robin gave a soft smile, signing okay now before lightly nudging Nancy off of her.
Do you want to talk about it? Nancy asked gently. Robin shakes her head, Just the usual. Sometimes my ears process more than my brain can handle. It’s a lot. The girl looked exhausted, patches of gray beginning to form underneath her drooping eyes. Nancy sighed sadly, she hated seeing Robin like this. She knew how much meltdowns took out of her. She pressed a tender kiss to Robin’s lips before standing up, holding out her hand for Robin to take before pulling her up. Nancy brushed a stray bang behind Robin’s ear. How about we head to bed, yeah? It’s already nighttime.
Robin nodded, following Nancy upstairs into her bedroom. The two girls stripped down to just their underwear, pulling the other into a loving hug. No words needed to be spoken. The delicate energy surrounding them held them together as they swayed in the pale moonlight. Robin pulled her head back, reaching to hold Nancy’s chin and brushing her nose against hers.
“I love you.” Robin said quietly. Nancy beamed. “I love you too.”
They stayed like that for a while. Bare chests together, hands clasped besides them, heads rested in the crook of the other’s neck, breathing slow and steady as they drank in the essence of one another.
Nancy lifted her head before wordlessly guiding Robin to bed. They slipped beneath the covers, Nancy settling down and resting just above Robin’s breasts. She kissed a trail down her sternum, stopping at her ribcage and singing into her chest.

She felt Robin’s heartbeat slow, hearing a gentle snore from the girl above. Nancy chuckled, letting her own eyes flutter shut, a small grin lacing her lips as she let sleep overtake her.
