girls carrying their shoes down in the lobby

Summary:

Brittnay and Mackenzie host a New Year's Eve party. After, Brittnay is sentimental.

Notes:

hi, this idea came to me fully formed and I just had to write it :) something short and sweet to make up for the angst that was my other fic. set a few years after they graduate.

Work Text:

Shay Van Buren is passed out on the couch, and Mackenzie is brushing her teeth in the bathroom, and Brittnay is finishing the last dregs of their last wine bottle on the kitchen counter.

Most everyone has gone home now. There’s cups scattered around the various surfaces of the living room and kitchen, and there are still streamers taped onto the ceiling. Brittnay sets down the empty bottle with a clunk on the laminate. She breathes.

She’s still staring aimlessly at the oven when Mackenzie walks into the kitchen. She can tell it’s her by the slip of her fuzzy socks on the floor. “Hey,” Mackenzie says, quiet, placing her hands on either side of Brittnay’s hips and leaning in. Brittnay leans her forehead against Mackenzie’s and closes her eyes.

“Tired?” Mackenzie asks.

Brittnay hums in agreement. She’s a little drunk but no where near the amount of wasted she used to get in high school. She guesses she’s old now.

“Hop down, let’s go to bed,” Mackenzie says. Brittnay pulls back and frowns.

She is tired. But she doesn’t want to sleep. She wants to stay here forever, in the afterglow of the party, sharing breath with her favorite person in the whole world. She gets an idea.

Brittnay grins and takes Mackenzie’s hands in her own, interlocking their fingers. “Dance with me,” she says.

Mackenzie squints. “There’s no music Britt.”

“I’ll hum something,” Brittnay says, and Mackenzie laughs out loud.

They stand in the kitchen, arms around each other, and sway. Brittnay doesn’t actually hum, and it’s not really dancing, but it’s still nice. Brittnay thinks she’s getting too sentimental these days. She told Trisha earlier that night that she loved her, that she was her best friend ever, and wasn’t that just super fucking sappy. But Brittnay can’t really find it in herself to care.

Shay walks in, awake and stumbling from her nap. She fell asleep before midnight, like she always does.

“Stop being gay in my kitchen,” she grumbles.

“Not just your fucking kitchen,” Brittnay cuts back. Shay flips her off and grabs a coconut water out of the fridge before heading off, presumably to her bedroom.

Mackenzie is giggling against her shoulder. “What’s so fucking funny?” Brittnay asks, and Mackenzie just laughs harder and pulls away. Her smile is blinding, big and full like it was when they were kids.

“Just you,” Mackenzie says, and kisses her. Brittnay should be affronted, but she’s a little too distracted to be annoyed. Mackenzie pulls away after a few moments.

“Happy new year Britt. Let’s go the fuck to bed.”
