Work Text:
Wilford never liked it when Dark was beating up themselves. Who would even like seeing their special one delving in self hatred? Because he saw it just fine despite them always trying to hide it. As they looked into the mirror, getting lost in the image it presents and their aura getting more and more vivid, moving around and lashing out more and more frequently, Wilford could see the hurt and anger that was lurking inside of them.
They always despised themselves and only doing something work related or being by this bubbly madman's side could make them forget about it. But this tactic didn't work every time, even with him besides them they had moments of self deprecation.
For example, this self hatred always came to them when they saw their reflection while getting ready in the morning. Seeing their dead skin and colorless composure, their broken aura, their hatred and anger filled eyes which sunk into their sockets, basically seeing a broken and furious creature looking back at them made them feel even more miserable. It made them want to break the mirror, so they wouldn't see the monster they have become. It made them feel like a reject, something to get rid of, a horrible freak of nature, a...
The sudden feeling of being hugged brought them back from the spiral, at first with a small panic then infinite amount of comfort and peace. Wilford saw their aura spike at his touch as he hugged them from behind, then flatten down as they closed their eyes letting themselves relax and bobbing their head backwards laying it on his shoulder.
Wilford responded with a smile, and as he hugged them tighter, he gave them a soft kiss on their neck.
"I think you're beautiful." his voice was quiet and soothing, his kiss soft and warm, and all of this felt like a warm blanket being layed on a helpless animal after a rough and especially cold day out in the wild.
Dark just stood there in silence, not wanting to break the spell which was cast upon the two of them. They didn't believe him of course, but it felt ever so nice to hear this especially from the man they adore and respect so dearly.
"I know that you don't believe me." And with this there goes another soft kiss now on their face. "But maybe if I say and show it enough you will. And I won't stop until that day comes, I promise."
He always says this and frankly, this is all Dark needs to hear. Maybe he always peaks into their thoughts so he can figure out what he needs to say. Or he just simply knows them this well. But he always says this and haven't broken his promise yet. This made Dark hopeful for him not to let them down and also for themselves finally believing him one day. Until then, they were more and more thankful for having him by their side and being patient with them knowing goddamn well it's not one of his strong suit.
It didn't take them much longer than a few seconds to gather the strength to whisper back an answer.
"Thank you."
