Work Text:

The two women sat at their tiny table in their tiny apartment in New York. heavy rain pattered onto the windows next to them, it was getting dark quickly, as it does at 5pm in mid november, though the setting sun was obscured by gray clouds. The taller one, with short brown hair and face dotted with freckles sighed, she’d been sitting and grading her students papers for a few hours now. Her wife sat across from her, not paying attention to her own journalism work that stood in front of her.

She stared at the women across from her, taking all of her in. all of her freckles you could trace constellations on, her eye bags and furrowed brows from dealing with high schoolers all day(Nancy doesn’t know how she could do it, she gets annoyed with the party so frequently; though Robin was better with kids than she was), the way her eyes scanned the papers in front of her, the way she bit her lip in focus, the way her hands moved quickly, correcting mistakes. All of her was hers and she couldn’t believe how she got so lucky. Even with everything that happened when they were younger. She sighed and the other women looked up at her with a smirk.

She looked down, face flushed as she pretended to be focused. Just like she was a highschooler again. Stealing glances with each other in their shared classes, after everything calmed down. After she and Jonathan broke up after they both figured themselves out, they went back to being friends; Nancy spent countless hours ranting about Robin to him. Staring at Robin during her ramblings. Skipping classes to talk under the bleachers in the last months of their senior year, when their grades didn’t matter as much. Drunken nights at Robins, with cheap beer and vodka stolen from steves; the night filled with deep conversations and drunkenly sweet kisses . In their small town where nobody other than the party would ever accept them. Together, under the same bleachers they shared quick kisses, they swore to each other they’d get out together.

That was years ago, now look at them. The upside down tragedies were over, though they still dealt with their trauma. They were now miles away from Hawkins, still hopelessly in love as they were. Living their domestic life in a big city. As they sat at their small table, still stealing glances, they both couldn’t believe how lucky they got
