Chapter 1: Telephone

Chapter Text

Wednesday stared at the cell phone in her hand, unsure wether or not to be disgusted at Xavier's gesture. Everyone knew she didn't wish to be a slave to technology yet here she was.

She hadn't touched in it nearly a month. It had sat in its neat black box undisturbed. Who knows what possessed wednesday to open it today, but it was now free. Very out of place in her room.

She figured she owed Xavier a text after all she had put him through last semester. As much as Wednesday didn't do emotions, she knew it was wrong. She was very aware she had messed up.

At first she figured taking an arrow for him would do, maybe it fixed things on his end as he had given the gift, yet wednesday was burdened with an unfamiliar feeling. Guilt. It was a horrifying, disgusting monster of a feeling she never wished to feel again.

Perhaps her investigation had been sabotaged to lead her awry, or maybe it was as others had suggested. Tyler had clouded her judgement.

Either way, Xavier ended up in the middle. The one who in the end had also gotten punished.

So now Wednesday, most likely feeling the effects of disgusting guilt, is considering sending a text.

If she did send it, she would be under no expectation to ever send another or even reply and she wouldn't have to interact with the boy until the next semester began.

That thought peaked her interest, no more guilt. No more stupid phone to pull her attention away from her writing.

Wednesday slowly unlocked the phone, crinkling her nose in disgust with herself. She had two contacts in her phone. Her stalker, and Xavier.

He had thankfully kept his contact concise. No silly emojis just his name. Enid surely would've put a whole array next to her name.

She sat there for what felt like an hour simply staring. Unsure of what to say. An apology was never going to happen. Not from her.

So instead she simply typed. "It works."

As soon as she hit the send button she threw the phone aside and got back to her writing. However much to her dismay, almost immediately, the most awful sharp pinging noise came from her phone.

Xavier had replied.

Without thinking she picked up the phone, breaking the no replying rule she'd set. "Glad it works. Never thought you'd text :)" was his reply.

It was too easy, it was instant messaging. It would be rude to not respond. So absolutely hating herself she replies back. "Never thought I would either."

This time she truly doesn't respond when Xavier responds back almost immediately. Her writing is her priority. Not some boy.
