"You didn't have to stay with me, you know? I can protect myself." Izuku said as he wiped down tables, the cats jumped down and ran over to Hitoshi for a fresh dose of pets. "Who says I stayed to protect you? For all you know I could have stayed for the cats!" The pile of felines on the floor left just enough room for a tired face to be seen. Izuku tucked the towel into an apron pocket and turned to lean over where the strangling strands of purple hair poked out, dark purple eyes syncing up with a velvety green. While you couldn't see Hitoshi's mouth fully due to a cat's lazy paw or tail, the fact that his pupils were twice their size spoke for itself.
"If you had come just for the cats, you wouldn't have come all the way here. I know you got two cats that are just begging for attention. What was it, SodaPop and bastard?" A few cats perked up at the announcement of cats that weren't themselves. "Shh! Don't bring them up, not here!" He spoke as if it was slander to his reputation. Barely moving his hands, Hitoshi began petting the cats once more while whispering sweet nothings.
"I'm starting to think you're in a relationship with the cats and not me…" It was teetering on the line of humor and reassuring to think he'd never have to compete with another person for Hitoshi's love, but instead his coworkers. "Ladies, ladies, please! There's enough of this handsome insomniac to go around-!" His voice was cut off by Georgia, the large black tabby, deciding that his face was the perfect seat in the room. “Oh please you falter yourself, they’d be all over me the moment I shake some treats.” Izuku said while straightening out the table liners and reordering the cat paw themed shakers.
The room went silent except for the loud purrs from the cats, the occasional car passing by, and the two boys breathing. That quickly turned to one boy breathing as the other began suffocating in the fluff.
"Toshi?"
"...!"
"Oh my God!" Rushing over, Izuku hauled the goliath of a cat off of Hitoshi’s face, the other cats moving off of him at the disturbance.
“Are you okay??” His face was a bright pink, but that tired look never left. Sitting up with a lot of popping bones and a groan, he turned to look Izuku dead in the eye. “Why would you do that? I could have had the best death known to man.”
With a sigh of relief that his boyfriend was not suffering brain damage from lack of oxygen, he plopped the cat down and reached out a hand. “Yeah but I kinda don't wanna be charged with murder. I don't think many people would believe me if I said an extremely fat cat suffocated you.” pulling Hitoshi up from the hair covered floor, Izuku placed his apron on the waiting hook.
“Come on, we got to go before the cats realize we’re gone.” begrudgingly leaving the cat haven, Hitoshi stood outside next to Izuku, watching him lock up. The winter freeze wasn't as chilling as it was annoying, the constant rough winds, always slipping on unseen black ice on the way to school and being pelted with hail instead of nice fluffy snow.
Speaking of, there had yet to be any actual snowfall.
Yeah there was the occasional slush storm or the rumors of a blizzard but still no enjoyable snow.
“Hey my pops said he’ll pick us up on his way home, if you're willing?” Hitoshi knew he was poking a balloon with a needle with this, but he was willing to keep trying until it popped. “You know I couldn't do that, my place is way too far from your place.” Flapping his hand in front of him as if to wave off the question, Izuku stuffed the ring of keys into his yellow backpack. “Well you should know my pa would probably disown me if I let you go home alone.”
“The chances of me accepting a ride and not feeling guilty about it are about as likely as it snowing.”
Now, Hitoshi didn't believe in a god, but you can't tell him that what happens next is a coincidence.
A snowflake. Not a ball of hail or the wet drip of some slush, a real, detailed snowflake, fell right in front of the two. And then another, and another, and then looking up there were thousands. The streets and sidewalks around them were turning white at a rapid pace, their shoulders turning as well.
“Well…”
“Well…?”
The notable surprise was interrupted by the bright glare of car lights, and a honk. Turning to a still stuttering Izuku, he reached for his hand, “Looks like you're getting a ride home and won't feel guilty about it.”
Izuku stared at his hand for a moment before giving his best “Dear lord don't let my boyfriend have atmokinesis as a quirk” smile and taking his hand. “I guess I am.”
Getting into the car, the soft tune of pre-quirk era music filled their ears along with a cheery voice.
“Hey there listeners! Did you guys have a good time?”
Izuku couldn't tell if his day was getting better or worse considering he was now in the car with his amazing boyfriend and Present Mic. But that also means one of Hitoshi’s fathers is The Present Mic!
Before he could get caught up in that mess, his thoughts were interrupted by Hitoshi's voice. “Yeah, I almost got the death dad says he wants till Izuku cut that dream short.” moving the mirror down to look at his son, his eyes gave a look of concern. “You almost got suffocated by cats?”
“Yep, big fat one named…”
“Georgia.”
“Georgia!” With a sigh, Hizashi turned his eyes back to the road, “Don’t let Sho hear you say that. Knowing him, he’ll make you do The Hell course out of jealousy.” A shiver ran down the spine of the father and son at the mention of that damn thing.
By the time they had gotten in front of Izuku’s apartment complex Hitoshi had fallen asleep against his shoulder and the car had developed an awkward silence. In his attempts at shifting Hitoshi without waking him, Yamada began to speak to him. “Izuku?”
Snapping his head up, he was face to face with the loud blond. “Oh, uh, yes sir?”
“Stay safe okay? Also thank you for saving my son from suffocation, I don't think I could keep a straight face if I heard that he died from a cat.” There was a comforting humor in his voice,
“A- anytime sir! I don't think I could either…”
Yamada stared fondly at the boy as he walked up to his apartment, thinking about his past ideas as to what his son’s boyfriend would be like. Just looking at him, he could see trust and loyalty shining brightly like a lantern. ‘I know Eri likes the kid, and so do I but… Sho might be his brick wall.’
Sitting up from his fake slumber, Hitoshi smiled at the snow that continued to fall around the car.
‘Two down, one to go.’
