An Unpleasant Arrival

Summary:

Will someone from the past stir up unresolved feelings for Korra?

Notes:

The end is near and I am excited to get there! This chapter has a little less Disney related references. I needed to stir the pot a little and add a few other characters for fun. I think it turned out well.

Hope you all enjoy! Feedback is very much appreciated!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

We finished our lunch and enjoyed a Mickey ice cream afterwards. I decided that on this trip, I would splurge and indulge myself with as many sweats as I want. Typically, I do not eat too many on a daily basis, but today was special. So, whenever Korra wanted something to eat, we ate.

Spending this time with Korra was so wonderful. Back at home, we lead such busy lives. My company takes up a lot of time and Korra is a much sought-after physical therapist. It’s very rare that we get a few days alone together. Before this trip, the last time we really got to spend multiple days with one another was on New Year’s when we spent it with her parents in Alaska.

It was during the trip when I spoke with her father and revealed to him my intentions with his daughter. He was thrilled to say the least. I was wrapped in his arms with one of his great big bear hugs. He told me that he would be delighted to welcome me into the family. Him and Senna have always called me their daughter, but this would make it more official. They didn’t know when I was planning on asking. I more or less wanted it to be a surprise for everyone.

We ventured over to some more ‘kid friendly’ rides despite my protest. Korra assured me that we would not appear too old for these rides. So, just for her, I sucked it up and we rode Winnie the Pooh, Dumbo, Peter Pan, and It’s a Small World.

As we were exiting the infamous It’s a Small World, Korra clumsily bumped the shoulder of a taller woman. Before the woman turned around, I noticed her long dark braided hair and pale skin. She reminded me of someone from Korra’s past. But it couldn’t be, right? Not here of all places.

“Korra? Is that you?”

Oh no. It is her… Korra’s ex-girlfriend before me. The one who broke her heart.

Korra turned and saw the familiar face smirking at the two of them. She let go of my hand so fast and went in for hug with her ex.

“WOW! Kuvira? What are the odds that you would be here?!”

“Well, I am surprised my big mouthed sister didn’t tell you! She is the one who gave me the idea to come down to Florida this year.”

Opal, how could you do this to me?! A warning that we might run into Korra’s first love would have been fantastic!!!

“She did not say anything to us. OH! By the way, this is Asami.” She wrapped her arm around my shoulders bringing out of her shadow. “My girlfriend!”

She extended her hand but seemed to look quite annoyed. “Nice to meet you Dasani, was it? Like the nasty tasting water?” Okay, that was uncalled for.

I reached for her hand and boy did she have an overly tight grip. Almost like she was trying to show dominance over me. “Ummm, it’s actually Uhh-Sa-Mi.” Really accentuating the syllables.

“My bad.”

I was ready for this encounter to be over, but Korra wanted to move over to a place where they could catch up.

“So, how are you? How’s Bataar? Opal hasn’t talked about him in a while.”

Bataar is Opal’s older brother and Kuvira is her sister. Well, she is her adopted sister. Technically, not even adopted. Kuvira was taken in by Su, Opal’s mother, and had been trained in combat from a young age in order to go into the military.

“Yeah, we sort of went through a messy break up. Let’s just say… He wasn’t doing it for me anymore, so I went to someone who did. He caught us. Had a mental breakdown. We got into a fight. Broke some things. Both got arrested and charged with assault and destruction of property. Then we were sentenced community service.”

Korra wore a look of shock and disbelief. However, I could believe it. I already knew Kuvira had a temper from the stories Korra told me about her.

“Bataar moved back in with his parents, and they agreed not to tell any of the other siblings yet. He is too humiliated to deal with it. Bataar Sr. and Su are of course coddling him. In the end though, I’m better off. Men just aren’t able to do the things that women do for me.”

Kuvira started to lean in closer to us at the table. “Hey, do you remember that one time….” She trailed off hoping that Korra would connect the dots.

I’m assuming she did because her face lit up bright red. “Uhh, Kuv, maybe we shouldn’t talk about that here. There are children all around!”

Kuv? She was back on her old nickname?

“It’s okay, I know you will never forget that night. The night of 13 times.” The look I saw on her face said everything for me. I knew she was seeing how Korra was going to react and was wanting to get a reaction out of me.

But damn! 13 times? The most we had ever gone was 10 times! And that was in a whole day! Not just a night…

Quickly, Korra stopped her. “OOOkay. Let’s change the subject. Are you seeing anyone now? Who did you come here with?”

“Currently, not seeing anyone. But I may have my eye on someone.”

She better not be talking about Korra.

“And I am here with my army buddy and her family. They convinced to tag along even though I am not big on young children.”

“Yeah… I was wondering what brought the grouchiest person I know to the ‘happiest place on earth.’”

“Ha ha. I am not the grouchiest. Have you even met Su’s sister Lin?”

“True. But still. I would have never guessed I would run into you here!”

Kuvira leaned back in her seat seeming very pleased with herself. “I don’t know, something just told me that I had to come on this trip. That a big opportunity would come my way.”

Korra was clueless to the intentions behind her comments. I was no fool though.

“Excuse me, I’m going to go find a bathroom then grab some popcorn. I’ll be right back.” Before walking away, I made sure to leave a lingering kiss on Korra’s lips, while also opening my eyes to stare directly into a pair of olive eyes glaring at me with disdain.

When we parted, Korra had completely forgot about Kuvira.

“Okay babe, don’t be too long! We still have to hit a few more rides before dinner!”

Korra and Kuvira had moved to a more secluded area. I walked over to where we had been sitting, but before I got within 10 feet, I noticed them over by a building in kind of like a nook in the wall. They were awfully close and both of them were moving their arms about as they spoke. Were they arguing? What happened in the 15 minutes I had been gone?

Then, it happened. What I had feared when I first realized who Korra had bumped into.

Kuvira was leaning in and reached for Korra’s face. I almost couldn’t believe that Korra could do something like this. But before I lost my temper and marched over there, Korra backed away. There was a few more minutes of talking between the two. I decided to just sit down and see where things went. I trusted Korra and her pulling away in a situation like that, proved that she was trustworthy. Why had I even doubted that. Probably my own insecurities from past experiences with Mako…

Lost in my thoughts, I didn’t hear that Korra had sat down beside me.

“Hey.” She sounded down.

I looked up and she bore the look of shame and guilt. “Hey! Where’s Kuvira?” She was nowhere in sight, thankfully.

“Oh, she went to find her friends…” Korra couldn’t even look at me.

Did I miss something? Was there more to their conversation that I didn’t see?

“Is something wrong, Kor?” I extended my arm to hold her hand, but she moved it.

“There’s something I need to tell you.” Oh no…

“After you left, Kuvira wanted to talk somewhere more private. So, we went over there.” She gestured to the area I saw them. “She wanted to tell me that she still had feelings for me and that she came here hoping to run into me and that I would run into her arms, and we would get back together.”

Korra couldn’t bare to look at me and I was starting to worry.

“I told her that I did not feel the same way about her! That she broke my heart, and I could never trust her again. Kuvira will always be a part of my past. But that’s the thing. She’s in my past.” Korra’s beautiful blue eyes finally met mine and she placed her hand on my thigh. “You, Asami. You are my present AND future. I am more in love with you than I have ever been with anyone. You are the I want to come home to every single day. I told her that I would never love her even half as much as I love you.” Then Korra looked away.

“But after I said that she tried to kiss me. I PULLED AWAY IMMEDIATELY AND SHE NEVER EVEN TOUCHED ME!” She looked back at me. Tears welled up in my eyes. “But it happened, and I just wanted you to know.”

“I saw…” Now it was my turn to look away. “I saw you guys talking and I saw her lean in. Thank you for being honest with me. And thank you for the wonderful things you said about me. I feel the same way about you Korra. I know I got a little jealous earlier today, but I trust you more than anyone I know.”

“It’s safe to say that we won’t have to worry about her anymore. After the almost kiss, I let her have it, and put her in her place. I think she was embarrassed so she fled with her tail between her legs.”

That comment made both of us laugh.

I was almost too embarrassed to ask, but Korra knew when she saw me bite my lip that there was something I wanted to ask.

“What’s wrong?”

“It’s nothing. Forget it.” She caressed my cheek with her hand.

“Go ahead, you can say it.”

“Well, there was something Kuvira mentioned that I was wondering about…” Okay, just say it Asami. “Th- thir- uhh- thirteen times?” I think she could see the hurt in my eyes.

Korra just burst into fit of laughter. “Hold on, hold on.” She tried to compose herself. “Okay, sorry about that. I was holding that in since Kuvira said it.”

I was slightly more relieved.

“This so called ‘night of 13 times,’ wasn’t actually 13 times. To her knowledge, yes it was 13 times. However, I actually faked it at least 5 times.”

“Seriously?!” Has Korra ever faked it with me? Oh gosh

“She was good in bed, yeah, I won’t lie about that. But with you Asami, I never have to fake it. Even on ‘the day of the perfect 10.’”

I hummed in agreement with Korra. “That was the best day.”

Her hands were on my face and brought me close enough for our noses to touch. “You are it for me ‘Sami, I love you so much, and THAT is what I told Kuvira.”

“I love you too Korra.”

The sun would be going down very soon which meant that it was almost time for my long-standing plan to be put into action. Opal would let me know when they were leaving the airport and when they arrived at the gates to Magic Kingdom. I would need to come up with some kind of excuse to disappear for a few minutes in order to discreetly get the ring. Shouldn’t be too hard right?

Notes:

I am planning 3 more chapters to finish off this story. I am trying to get them out as soon as possible while the ideas are fresh in my mind and I am very excited to finish out this series.
