Draining Out Thoughts

Summary:

Akaashi was prone to being lost in his own head for the grand majority of his life. Often it left him unable to be certain of anything. However, he could always count on his boyfriends to be a constant in his life. For as foolish as they could be at times, they were a comfort. A familiarity he needed to be able to venture not only outside his thoughts, but out in the world as well. He could only hope that they would stick around.

Notes:

Should note that while they are technically together in my AU, I didn't really end up focusing too much on their romantic relationship as much as their platonic relationship !

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Unfamiliarity began to seep into his veins, taking hold of his every thought and action. Oddly enough, it was a welcomed feeling. He couldn’t quite place why he was unable to settle down. Surely, even he was capable of holding a conversation. They were familiar to him and supposed to be his source of comfort. So why did he feel so out of place?

“Interesting drink you’ve got there, huh Akaashi?” Bokuto jokes.

Akaashi lifts his head up to face him. It dawned on him that he’s been staring blankly at the cup in his hand for god knows how long, blissfully unaware of the confused looks the three have been giving him.

“Oh..haha yes, I suppose it is quite interesting,” he replied, feeling his face heat up under the attention.

“Did the marshmallows catch your eyes?” Kuroo teased.

“To be fair, I never seen ones shaped like this either,” said Kenma, shrugging as he pointed at the mug.

Curious, Akaashi peered back into his cup. Oh. There were small leaf shaped marshmallows, leaving streaks of reds and oranges behind. How fitting for fall, he mused. Embarrassing, that he had been too far gone to notice earlier. He looked back up to realize that once again the three were watching him with amusement painting their faces. Akaashi stared wide eyed at them, the exchange had the group exchanging smiles and chuckles.

“Hard not to have them catch your eye, afterall, Bokuto has such great taste in…marshmallows,” Akaashi said, knowing full well that the sarcasm was practically dripping off his every word. He couldn’t help the smile that was slowly making its way onto his face.

“Hey! You guys can poke fun at them all you want, but at the end of the day they’re still in your mugs,” said Bokuto as he jokingly snatched the bag of marshmallows off the table, throwing a funny look at the three.
“Well, given the chilly weather, I can imagine why a hot chocolate and marshmallows would be so captivating,” Kenma said. “And it’s only going to get colder from here.”

“Ahh that’s right, we should make our way out now then so Akaashi and Bokuto can get to their observation on time. We definitely don’t want to get caught in the cold,” said Kuroo.

And with the reminder of New York’s unforgiving weather hanging over their heads, they decided at the last minute to grab the blanket they had previously abandoned on the side of the couch to take along with them. They made their way out of the apartment they all shared, heading down the hall towards the front door. Never would they claim to be the most coordinated of people, but everytime they try to leave the apartment only to have to sift through the shoes by the door, they sure do rethink their usual technique of “just toss ‘em here and we’ll figure it out later.” It takes them yet another five before they all have their shoes on and are properly dressed for the cold. As they pile into the car, Kuroo of course claims the radio saying ‘I drive, I choose’ as Kenma rolls his eyes from the passenger seat. Faint jazz music plays as they drive down the highway and they watch as red and orange leaves flutter around the busy world surrounding us. Akaashi shifts to look out the window once pleasantly surprised to see small raindrops beginning to fall and cling to the glass. It was quite the sight watching the buildings full of vivid lights and colors melt away as the raindrops blurred the window. Wait.

“It’s raining,” Akaashi realized.

“That it is Akaashi,” said Bokuto, as a small chuckle left him.

“No, I know it’s raining, I mean it’s raining, '' he said.

Confused, Bokuto awkwardly turned in his seat in an attempt to face Akaashi.

“Observing Bokuto, remember?”

“The observing? We’re headed there right now. What about it?”

“It’s outside.”

“Yes I know outside,” Bokuto said, still not catching on. “Wait…oh...” “It’s raining.”
