Chapter Text

"Still need a ride?" Dick leaned on the counter, "I mean, I need a ride. Please? Please beautiful?"

"You're lucky you're cute." you winked, "The station is by my first stop anyways."

It felt like any normal day, you had the day off due to over-scheduling so you could run errands and Dickie doo had work after barely letting you leave the bed. Just a few stops, grocery store, pharmacy, and the pastry shop that just opened up last week because you are a good girl and got all the work done today and just maybe Dick might get something too. A light winter breeze greeted you both as you walked out, a little frown on your face seeing as it has yet to snow this year.

"Babe, I'll drive." he took your keys and smiled as he opened the passenger door for you.

"I know." an eye roll met him but you didn't fight it.

That's how it normally went. He would stop out by his entry point in for work, switch you seats and kiss you goodbye before you drive off. This happened as normal, switching to the drivers seat and then you immediately went to the pharmacy. Sitting there, you looked at the pharmacy sign and tapped the steering wheel. Today was different for one reason, you missed your period by about a week now and was starting to act odd. Not horribly different but enough you needed to buy a pregnancy test. You went in and right to the section needed, grabbing a water to chug on the way home and skipping the other stops because the more you were out the more you started to panic. What if Dick gets off early? What if he comes home for lunch and I am peeing. Skip groceries and go home. Do it now. Get it over with then do your running... Settle your nerves. That was all you did, rush home and go right towards the bathroom as Haley now joined you with her ball.

"Haley, babe, Mommy has to pee. Very important..."

A yip met your ears and she laid down by your foot.

"I love you girly, but this is very important." she lifted her head and slowly crossed to lay on the bath rug across the way.

The ball rolled over to rest by your foot as you were trying to figure out how to pee in the little Tupperware bowl to test with. After adjusting a few times, wiggling trying to get it in the little bowl. Why do men get the tool for this job and somehow still fucking miss the toilet. Giving up as your full bladder wouldn't stop the flow, you managed to get a good amount and opened a test to read and follow. Dip the soft material in the urine? That's it? Carefully, you dip the tip in, pull out quickly, and recap it to sit five minutes. Five minutes? Why so fucking long? Haley walked back over to your foot and tugged on your pant leg before yipping.

"We'll play after mommy get's done."

A small yip again and she put her front paw against your leg to stand up closer to you. Clearly impatient.

"Haley, please let me just pee and take this dumb test."

She sat back down begging, but as soon as you adjusted to wipe it began. Her little frame knocked the test strip off the sink and she grabbed and ran with it like it was a stick or a toy.

"HALEY!" you bolted and narrowly missed tripping on your pants like a bad cartoon, stopping to pull them up, "HALEY!"

She sat by the couch, tail wagging proud and no test in sight. No, no, no, no... A yip met you as she pounced off your leg and tossed a ball down beside you. Fuck.

"Haley, where is it?"

She yipped again, "No, mommy's stick. Where is it?"

Her butt went up with that speedy tail and she yipped again. God damnit... I need to get another test. Two... Maybe five. Fuck. You spun around for your keys and got her harness and leash on her, maybe a walk will calm her down.

"Let's take a walk to the corner store? Come along Haley."

She ran right out the door with you, barely waiting for the rickety elevator. Honestly the walk was nice until your thoughts took over, panic building up. All the what ifs building up to fry your brain. It was working too, zoned out you barely missed a taxi zooming through a red light, luckily little Haley tugged on the leash backward and knocked you out of the way and back to reality.

"Shit... Sorry Haley." you caught yourself on a light pole before bending down and scratching her chin, "Mommy is just, frazzled at the moment."

She lead you on the way to the drug store, walking in with you as you waved. The owner knew you and Dick, he liked cops hanging about as kinda extra protection. So when you seen him, a small bit of panic hit. I can't buy tests from him. If he mentions the tests to Dick, it all goes to hell. You went to the aisle, running a finger over a few choices. One with two tests, one that had a dropper instead of the stick to pee on, one much more expensive had plus and minus signs and came with three tests. Overall, you didn't have the time or brainpower to mess with finding the best one, so it went to the cheap ones you had friends often talk about. Glancing at the packaging and confirming it was indeed the one before grabbing a box. Then Haley yipped beside you and was sniffing down towards the small pet section down the way. Get one and have the mess repeated? No, no grab another. Thinking it over, you grabbed three boxes and then let her pick out a toy before adding her treats bag. It hid the basket contents as you walked up, wouldn't solve the actual checkout issue yet but you were working on it.

"Alright, check out and home..."

"Hey, Tommy."

You froze, that voice was definitely Dick and he had to be right at the checkout. Oh no. No. No. No... A quick glance, the two were talking while Dick's new partner was getting the drinks for them. Alright, wait it out... You turned towards the coolers and pulled the largest water you could find to chug on the way home. Buying just a few minutes at most from the issue at hand. Haley now notices the voice and yips, pulling toward her dad.

"Haley, please..." she bolted down the aisle as you ran after her silently.

"I got something special for you in the back."

"It's fine Tommy..."

"No, just one moment." the man walked off as a younger lady took the register over.

One gone, still need Dickie...

"Babe?" he grinned as you got to the end of the aisle, "What are you doing here?"

"Forgot something." You hid the hard swallow and sauntered over hoping he didn't notice you being off, "Figured Haley would like a walk."

Sliding the basket on the counter with smooth transition, the girl started scanning and bagging. Dick scooped up Haley and was talking to his partner, the perfect distraction.

"Awe, isn't she cute?"

"Rescue from the job. A couple bored teens were beating her up and I rescued her." he grinned, "Took her home and that one wouldn't let me give her away."

"Emotional support." you offered with a shrug, "I needed her more."

"Sure, needed." he rolled his eyes, "Little Haley has been great so far though."

"Trial run for kids?"

Your heart thudded at the thought alone. Breathe. Breathe in and out. It is fine. All alright. Breathe...

"Never really planned that far ahead. Not sure I am ready to be a parent yet at least." Dick brushed it off.

I better not be pregnant I guess. He isn't ready for it. I can't do it without him... Having to move back in woth mom and dad, find a new job, and care for a baby. Oh god...

"Ma'am, It's twenty-six even."

"Oh, sorry." you shook out your head, "Coming right up."

As you pulled your card about to swipe, you are stopped by your man passing over cash instead. His one hand pushing yours down before passing off the green.

"I got it beautiful. Tommy had something for me anyways." he gave you a kiss and sat Haley down, "Get home now, please."

"Right away officer."

A small wink was given and with the bag in hand, you went walking back home. Managing to avoid a complete breakdown aside, you were a little jittery yet as you shut the door to the bathroom so Haley couldn't get in this time. Another struggle to piss, but you managed enough and sat the test down. Chugging water for another pee, you got a second test started as the first timer dinged.

"Alright, alright... Calm down. You got this." you lifted it up and frowned, "Why did I buy the line test? I should've just got the words or the symbols."

Shifting again, you found the instructions and lined the photo and the test up to be sure. That's when your blood went cold, limbs heavy as you felt tears prickle at your eyes. Two lines... Two lines, positive. P. O. S. I. T. I. V. E... Fuck. I have a human growing inside me. I am not ready for this bullshit. You held your head, crying a bit as the next buzzer went off. It could be a lie. False positive. Tipping the test up and wiping her eyes, you found the same two lines and dropped the test on the floor as a whimper came out. Eliciting cries from Haley who couldn't check on you behind the locked door. Calm down, breathe. Focus... This is real, you have to adjust. You have to tell Dick. Fuck, you have to tell Dick. Breathing shallow, vision blurring a bit. He said he wasn't ready to be a parent. What if he leaves me? What if I... You struggled a little but walked yourself out of it before it went too far. Recounting what you see, hear, and feel. Coming back to reality, you hid the tests in a drawer and opened the door.

"Sorry baby, mommy just needed a break." you stroked behind her ear, "Mommy needs a lot right now."

Dick

Dick was just in the door from work, holding a small thing of flowers for you and a little gift Tommy ordered in for him. He hadn't expected you to be there when he stopped in, especially since Tommy was getting it from the back. Paying for your order and pushing you to go home was his bright idea to hide it. Haley met him within feet of the entry and was bouncing off him for attention.

"Hello Haley, how's my girl?"

She yipped and jumped against him again. Bending down, he stroked her head a bit and scratched under her chin. It was almost instinct to scoop her up but his arms were full and he had to focus.

"Where's Mommy at? I got her something." he glanced up slowly.

"Dickie?"

"Babe, come here."

Just barely stepping into view from the bedroom, a forced smile graced your lips on approach. There's my woman. Why she look worried? Is she sad? Why? His arms out to hug you once you were close enough to possibly miss the bag he was trying to hide. A lopsided smile being seen by him.

"Hello beautiful." a kiss on your forehead, arm wrapping your waist as his other hand tipped the flowers by your nose to smell, "Got something for you."

"Dickie..."

"Nope, not just flowers. As awesome as they are, and your favorites." he pulled back to leave you holding them, "I got something else."

"Dickie, I got you something..."

"After, you have to see this." he was turning away, hands pulling the paper bag into view and stretched out for you to take, "Here it is. Special delivery..."

"Dickie, this is important. I have to tell you something involving this..."

He was mid-turn to dropping the bag in your hand when Haley came running to him, a toy in her mouth to play. She hit his leg again, trying to get his attention. Hating it in this moment, he let a small sigh slip.

"One second Haley." he was reaching the bag out to you as you were starting to talk.

"Dickie, please. Really important here."

"Babe, one second." he looked down to pull the toy from Haley to throw, hoping to get one second to finish with you.

As he got it up, he saw the look on your face change and he finally realized what he was holding. In his hand was a little pink stick of plastic... Not not plastic stick, a pregnancy test, clearly used as the little digital window displaying lines. You look mortified and Haley sat looking smug like a good little dog as his brain went into overtime. She took a test?.. She took a test! Is it positive? Of course it is, why keep a negative one? Right? Maybe? What is two lines? Why doesn't it just say negative or positive?! Is it positive?! He blinked at it to make sure he wasn't hallucinating or anything, still firmly holding it.

"Uhhhhhhhhhhh..." he was lost, completely speechless.

"Please don't be mad." came the softest whisper he ever heard.

The way you looked down, a small stream of tears falling down your cheeks.. His heart broke, shattered. The homeless kids on the street didn't even get this kinda gut wrenching reaction. Why would I be mad? She can't really think I would be mad? Immediately dropping the test and the brown bag on the floor, he pulled you into a hug before you broke down sobbing. Shushing you gently as he kissed the top of your head.

"Babe, hey, do not cry. Please don't cry. Not like this. Happy tears. No sad tears." his arms pulsed with your body as he took your weight on and tugged you down with him on the couch, "Shhhhhhhhhh... No, no, no. Don't shut down on me now. I really need you here with me."

"Are you..?"

"I'm not mad." he cut you off and pulled you closer to him, "How could I be mad? We are having a baby... Right? That was a positive. Also fine if it isn't still not mad."

Rambling off, he couldn't bring himself to stop. If he stopped speaking, you would think he was angry. If he stopped, this moment would feel off. Silence would take over, making him feel like this would be a bad moment not good. It is a good moment. He babbled and babbled, trying to coax you out before you went into an attack. A normal attack is bad enough, it might be worse if she is pregnant. Cooing in your ear, rubbing your shoulder softly, cupping your cheek and letting you stay buried against him... It eased you. Little by little, he got you back.

"(y/n), you in there. Babe, please don't shut down... I am running out of words." a peck to your forehead brings up your eyes.

"Dickie..."

"Before you ask, I am not mad." his grin was genuine, "Will you please talk now?"

Lifting up your chin a bit, he pressed his forehead to yours eyes trailing down to the space between you. Normally, this would be the moment of something vaguely sexual. A tease for more, to heat your cheeks and make the mood lighter and a lot warmer. Now it was to focused on trying to gain x-ray vision like the Kents have so he can see it. To know it's real.

"I took three tests... All positive." you bit your lip.

"And you are..?" he gently pulled your bottom lip from your teeth, "Babe, talk with me here."

"I don't know."

"It's a start I guess."

You glanced down at your stomach, his eyes following down as well. He got up, sitting the flowers aside and looking at the mess left on the floor. A quick trip to the closet for the broom, cleaning up the candy treat he had bought you before returning to the couch. Looking at the little box to the side, there was no hesitation in pulling it over to him.

"What's with the box?"

"That's how I was going to tell you."

"This little box? The test doesn't fit." he looked at the pink strip still on the floor by their feet, "What's in the box then?"

"Dickie..."

"Well?"

He lifted the lid and looked in to find a little roll. A small little fluffy bread roll sat in the box. Blinking and struggling to piece it together, to play with the words for something. Giving up, he looked to you for guidance.

"Tell me you get it." you sighed.

"Get what? A bread roll?"

"You tell me these stories of how you're the great Robin that solved most the Riddler's puzzles but you can't get this? Pun master general has nothing for this?" your lips curled up, "Bread rolls, what is another word for roll?"

"Biscuit? Are you saying I buttered your biscuit." he gave a smug grin.

"No, try again."

"Bread, roll, biscuit... Loaf? Yeah, nothing comes to mind for loaf." he scratched his head, "Baguette? Bap?"

"Bap? What?" you frowned.

"Bun?"

"Bun."

"Bun..." his brow wrinkled in thought before his face lit up, laughing as he pulled you into a kiss, "Bun in the oven."

"Bingo."

"How else would you be perfect for me? Full of puns, beautiful, beyond funny..."

"Dickie." you poked his chest, "I think that fits you more than me."

"Nah, you definitely won that."

The giggle from your lips was so simple and sweet, light hearted from what was here moments ago, "At least you didn't propose."

These words hit him like a ton of bricks. Zoned out and trying to process it. Propose? I never thought about... It makes sense. I love her, she is having my baby, usually you get married before the kids but, what is normal about us? Lost in his head, he missed the worry on your face as you clicked your fingers and woke him up.

"Yo, Dickie boy... Hello?"

"Yeah, yeah." he nodded.

"Don't even think it."

He frowned, "Think what?"

"Do not propose."

"Why not?"

"We have been together a year and a half. If you haven't been moved to do that yet, using the baby as a tipping point isn't the key. I will say no."

"You love me right?" he leaned in towards you.

"Yes, but..."

"But nothing. I can get a..."

"Richard Grayson, no. I don't want to marry you because we have a child. I don't want to marry for convenience or out of social norms. I want you to feel it is what you want and we are ready for it." you closed your eyes and he drank in the glow on your skin, "I want it to be right, not forced."

"I want to marry you."

"I do too, but not like this. It feels like it is for a child not for us."

He nodded, "Alright. Challenge accepted."

"Dick..."

"You won't know when, or where, or how... But I will propose and it will not be because of all that. It will be because I love you."

"Dickie..."

"Not soon either. I will give it time." he gave a soft peck to your forehead, "I love you."

"Love you too."
