Chapter Text
Mornings like these, especially around this time of year, were mornings that Lumine both loved and dreaded. When the sun first made its self-known through her bedroom window, she loved the fact that when she woke up the air was just a little warm, no longer a biting chill she had endured over the past few months. Spring was on its way and when she climbed out of bed to peer outside her window on the second floor of the large house, she smiled seeing that the seasonal flowers in the small back garden were as well.
Not long after she had woken, Noelle had nearly tripped into her room as she wished her a good morning, hastily going about preparing her attire. In such a short amount of time, she’d helped her into a soft blue morning dress, one of her favorites, and followed her out of her room and towards the stairs. Lumine had made her way towards the parlor, speaking with Noelle about the day's plans as they walked. In a short amount of time through their conversation she’d been notified that she had received a letter from her brother along with a new tea he’d sent back as a gift, the dress she ordered several weeks prior was due to arrive tomorrow, and Lisa had sent word earlier that morning that she wished to meet for tea.
However, even as the younger girl shared such wonderful news, her maid seemed a bit, fidgety even as she messed with her apron's lace. As hard-working as she was Lumine had taken it to her most likely overworking herself once again, but the idea quickly flew out the window as they entered the parlor.
A fresh pot of tea, no doubt the exact kind that Aether had just gifted her, rested atop the small table along with a newspaper and her breakfast. However, something was clearly out of place. The vase of viparyas that sat in the middle of the small table, taking up an unnecessary amount of room.
Noelle now began to pick at the lace as if trying to separate it from the apron. Peering up at her Lady, she tried giving her a smile of reassurance, “It’s that time of year again my Lady! Sir Kaeya brought them by earlier this morning on his way into town. He said he was passing by and wished to drop them off. He’d specifically ordered them for you even!” The young maid tried her best to dispel her friend's sour mood, but she continued to see distaste in her golden eyes.
“How lovely.” Was all Lumine had to say before making her way over to the table. With quick hands, Noelle poured her tea before dismissing herself to finish getting the house ready for the day. As Lumine picked up the porcelain cup decorated with purple and blue flowers to take a sip, her eyes bore into the flowers as she did just that. No doubt expensive, especially with being from Sumeru and the time of year it is. If Noelle had not told her they were from her old friend Kaeya, she would have sworn Aether had sent them.
Though she knew the flowers held no romantic significance as most did when sent to her by others, she also knew they weren’t harmless either. He was mocking her. A silent jab to remind her that it was that time of year again and she knew what to expect from men with not-so-innocent intentions. Peering away from the flowers, she glared down at the issue of Teyvat Times. Picking up the paper, she only had to turn two pages before she bit back a scoff.
Mondstadt along with two other nations had announced the kickoff of their debutante season. The first emotion Lumine felt when reading the words was pity for the poor girls who would be spending the next few months trying to find a husband. Ripping each other apart just about and throwing money away to host some of the most lavish parties of the season just for a couple hours of attention. The second was despair for herself. two years ago at the age of eighteen Lumine had made her debut into society, and two years after she still remained unwed with a smile on her face. A life of peace and freedom. However, for the next few months, such peace would be disrupted.
Tragic she’d have to say.
Even though she was more than content with the life she had now, her brother, however, was not. As he had announced during his last visit about four months ago, he addressed his concerns about his sister becoming a spinster and if she could be honest, Lumine didn’t mind the title. Perhaps she should worry more about her brother’s future wife instead, depending on if he even decided to marry, no doubt she’d want Lumine gone from their family home. Obviously, she would be the new Lady of the house and would want to start a family right away.
But that was a bridge she would cross when she came to it.
Instead, she picked up a piece of toast and took a bite, her mind running about her plans for the day. She had a book she needed to return to Lisa, no doubt one of the reasons she had called for her. However, meeting specifically for tea meant more. She wished to discuss something.
With a sigh, Lumine put the paper down, her mind unable to focus at the moment. She glanced at the table once more, noticing the letter Noelle had mentioned and an opener atop it. Lumine made quick work, reaching over to tear it apart and pull out its contents. Her eyes scanned the flowery words, and she couldn’t help but chuckle in distaste as she read a specific sentence,‘Now, I don’t wish to upset you as I did during my last visit but-’. As she continued to glance over her brother’s handwriting, she read with a pinched brow as he begged her to attend at least a few dances this season. That he’d set up a chaperone for her in his absence even.
By the time she’d finished scanning over the letter’s contents, one of the other maids had entered the parlor, a fresh vase of lamp grass in her hands. Her eyes zeroed in on the purple flowers she’d not been made aware of. How horrid, they clashed with the pastel color palette of the room with their brightness.
“Receiving gifts early I see my Lady?” She’d commented, “Would you like me to take them and put them in your room perhaps? Or maybe elsewhere in the home?” her smile didn’t reach her eyes as she asked. Lumine knew her well, Norma was her name, and she had quite an eye for design. No doubt she could feel the purple of the flowers didn’t really fit with the palette of the room. Instead, Lumine waved off her suggestion.
“No, I’ll keep them here at least for a few days, but the lamp grass is looking lovely, you can put that in my room.” The blonde insisted. Norma gave a nod of understanding before turning away to head towards Lumines room, though it wouldn’t surprise the young Lady if the purple flowers ended up disappearing by the end of the day no matter how expensive. Not that she would complain. She silently watched as the older woman scampered away, folding her brother’s letter even though she wanted to crumple it and throw it in the closes fireplace. However, she refused to be so petty. She loved her twin dearly and would never do such a thing to one of his letters.
So instead, when he returns home, she’d make sure it connected with his head as soon as he walked through the door.
Instead of sitting around and pouting over her brother’s request, she stood. The tea now tasted bitter with dramatic betrayal and the bread had gone cold in such a short amount of time. She peered out her parlor window, watching as the streets began to fill. From where she stood, she could barely catch a glimpse of multiple mothers rushing their daughters into With Wind Comes Glory. Poor Marjorie would have her hands full for the next few months.
There were also a select few who walked beside young men, their chaperon following close behind as the two conversed. It had only been two days since the season apparently began, and women were already making their rounds. She huffed; Aether had stated he’d prepared for her a chaperon for when she goes out yet never disclosed who it was specifically. It wouldn’t be Kaeya, even though he and Aether were close, he was too much of a smooth talker for her twin's liking. Diluc was busy no doubt and wouldn’t dare involve himself in a possible scandal of supposedly courting Lord Viatrix's dear sister while he was away. The farther he was away from women the better.
Lumine began to tap her fingers against her arms as she folded them, a slight headache beginning to form. Who could it be?
Again, her peace was interrupted by another. Noelle entered, asking if she was finished with breakfast and picking up the dishes of uneaten food as Lumine gave her a nod. However, she stopped as the blonde called out to her once she was prepared to walk away. Confused, Noelle turned towards her with a raised brow. “Did my brother ever speak to you or any of the others about a possible chaperon for me this season?” Lumine asked.
Green eyes went wide and her cheeks flushed, a sense of pride seemed to take over her friend. The Lady felt uncomfortable rather quickly at the ideas she already knew were pumping through the girl's mind. “My Lady, I didn’t suspect you’d actually indulge in the season! You know, if I may speak out of line, you always seemed uncomfortable when his Lordship would accompany you to the dances,” Noelle voiced her opinion, which earned her a smile from the Lady.
“It’s not that, Archons no. In the letter Aether sent me, he instructed I attend at least a few parties and that he had a chaperone lined up. I just thought he’d mentioned in passing to someone who it could be.” Lumine sighed, eyes once more drifting to peer outside and shifting at the various men that walked the street.
The young maid now felt embarrassed, having assumed such an outrageous idea. “While you’re out to visit Miss Lisa, I can ask some of the other servants if they’ve heard anything?” She couldn’t help but offer, mentally hoping to redeem herself of such embarrassment. The breath she released was small but steady when her Lady smiled.
“That would be lovely. Hopefully, he spoke to one about his choice of chaperon or at least someone heard something about it in passing.” Lumine prayed. Though it may seem odd to disclose such information to staff, Lumine and Aether believed they were close to most of the workers they grew up around, most never being such for rumors and gossip luckily outside the house.
“Well in the meantime I shall draw you a bath and help prepare your attire for your meeting with Miss Lisa.” The maid insisted before officially disappearing, allowing Lumine just a few more moments of alone time to stew in her thoughts.

Lumine had known Lisa for only around five years, the older woman having moved to Mondstadt and becoming the head librarian for the Knights of Favonius.
She was like the older sister Lumine never had. Sure, she could have intellectual conversations with Aether along with a select few of other women. She especially enjoyed when Ayaka would traverse the sea to come and visit, their conversations lasting well into the evenings and into the early morning hours over breakfast. But the difference between Lisa was that she had attended the Akademiya. She had graduated with honors and instead of pursuing her studies further decided to relocate and settle down in the small city of freedom.
A life of simplicity is what Lisa desired, and Lumine doesn’t believe she could relate more to anyone at this point in her life.
When she arrived inside Lisa’s office, the older woman had already started pouring them each a cup of tea. Lumine had changed into a long dress of soft gold, embroidery, and a matching shawl to fight off the slight chill in the air, though she was sure she’d have to rid herself of the drape once she left. Once the door had closed she made quick work of placing one of Lisa’s old textbooks onto the table that she’d allowed her to borrow. On top of it rested a stack of papers, which the brunette smiled at. “I believe this is your latest work. That was quite quick, it usually takes you at least till the end of the season to finish such a task.” She commented.
Picking up the stack of papers, she began to peer through them as she took her seat. The latest in the series of Regional Journals, the book series that brought the Viatrix twins a piece of their growing fortune. It may sound simple, but many people, commoners mostly, found the books to be a way to escape to distant lands without burning holes in their pockets.
The twin’s father had been a well-known adventurer, the man mostly being hired by the wealthy to travel across the lands for exotic delicacies. From flowers to animals to silks and spices, whatever job that was needed to be done, the wealthy could count on Lord Viatrix. He had also established a few trade routes which also helped keep the upper-class pockets filled with Mora and opportunity.
But, he had passed about eight years prior to illness, which left the twins alone. Aether had continued with the family business, and Lumine had taken it upon herself to write of her brother's adventures and what he’s been learning. He’d been in Sumeru the past year, and still had another year to go. Though he had visited just a few months ago, Lisa still remembers how red his face was from the intense heat of the sun. She had to bite back laughter whenever Lumine poked at her brother's cheeks, watching as he winced and glared at her.
Her comment had nearly earned her an eye roll. Though it was true that Lumine usually took her time writing, first off as an excuse as to not go out as much during this hellish time, and second because most of the time her brother's writing jumped around so much it took her weeks to piece together what he was actually talking about. However, this time her words seemed to just flow as she read through his various pieces of parchment. Her mind reeled back to the letter she had read that morning. He sure managed to write properly when he was trying to boss her around.
“I take it you must be intending to participate in this season? Since you finished the first few chapters quite early and I believe it’ll be another couple of months before your brother sends you more. You need something to do with your time.” The librarian took a sip of her tea, an excuse to hide her smile as Lumine gave her a look of distaste.
Education, as Lumine believed, is where the line was drawn between her and Lisa. Well, that and their love for various teas and sweets. Because though Lumine would prefer to spend her time writing, Lisa loved to flirt, thus she enjoyed this time of year. Now she wouldn’t say the woman had malicious intentions around this time, but she was very much aware of her assets to say.
When she’d first moved to Mondstadt, Lumine remembers the many time's men had stopped to do a double take as she walked by, her brother included. They had been on a walk together and when his head had quickly turned back, he’d stepped off the side of the road, tripping over his own feet and nearly dragging his dear sister down with him.
“It’s nice to see you have a good sense of humor as soon as you wake.” Lumine laughed, though quickly fell silent as Lisa eyed her, smirk upon her lips. How unsettling and embarrassing.
The librarian placed her cup upon its saucer before placing her hands in her lap. “I believe you’re aware that me calling you in today isn’t just about the book, correct?” The gentle yet serious tone of her voice made Lumine shift in her seat. It felt as if she were being reprimanded, even when she knew that wasn’t the case. Instead of responding, she gave a curt nod. The woman sighed dramatically, “I also called you to warn you that perhaps you may wish to prepare yourself this evening,”
The words she spoke earned her a raised brow by the blonde. “I believe your chaperon is to pick you up around six, upon your brother’s instructions of course. You must know by now that Jean has convinced Diluc to open his home for a dance this evening to help the young ladies that just entered society.” Lisa stated, eyeing the girl as she watched her face pale, “It’s an outside event, so you’ll have plenty of places to hide if you wish. Jean will be there along with Miss Lawrence if you desire their company.”
After receiving such news, the young Lady couldn’t wait for her brother to return home now, because now he wouldn’t only be getting a letter to the head, but perhaps her shoe too.
Lumine was quick to smile, though innocent as it may seem, her friend could tell she was seething. “If you’d be so kind, would you like to indulge me on who I should be expecting this evening then?” She tried to gather more information. However, Lisa giggled and Lumines eye twitched.
“Now why would I want to ruin the surprise?” The question made Lumine want to slam her head into the table. But instead, she took a long sip of tea, eyeing her friend who smiled and did the same. “Trust me, he’s a wonderful conversationalist. You’ll have the time of your life.”

She didn’t believe it to be possible, but her list of traitors was steadily growing today. What had been one, turned into two, which had now reached three.
When she’d arrived home Noelle had sorrowfully delivered the news that the staff had heard nothing from the Lord before he’d left, and her dejected expression had quickly shifted to surprise as Lumine delivered the news that she was to attend a party that evening. With the time already being just a little past lunch, Lisa having kept the Lady longer than expected to discuss her findings inside her old textbook, she felt rushed as Noelle and a few other maids directed her towards her room and jump into showing off her various dresses.
Lumine enjoyed all her dresses, but she rarely had any formal enough to attend a party such as this. As said before, she didn’t care to attend such events, thus her options were limited and very last season.
Her gaze shifted between a white dress with pearls and embroidery, and a pastel purple with flowers embroidered into the skirt and top. Her maids shifted, their arms growing tired from holding the dresses up. The Lady tapped her fingers against her legs as her eyes darted. The purple was beautiful but would be more suited for spring. It was a dress she’d received last year as a gift from Jean, and the white had been one of the dresses she thought about wearing for her debut two years ago.
“I’d like to see if the white still fits.” She insisted. Both women smiled before the other scampered away with the purple dress. The maid who stayed helped Lumine slip a corset on, instructing her to turn around and leaving the young woman breathless in seconds. “Are you sure it’s not tight enough?” Lumine couldn’t help but ask as she placed her hand on her stomach. The woman’s response was another sharp tug that left the blonde wheezing. Finally, she tied the laces and helped her slip on her dress.
The maid seemed proud, stepping away to admire the younger girl. “It fits perfectly my Lady.” She commented. Lumine admired herself in the mirror. Though she felt like her insides were being crushed, she had to admit, she looked rather stunning. However, time was running out and she couldn’t stand around admiring herself all day. Thus, with quick work, she slipped on her slippers and allowed her maids to fix her hair and add a light layer of makeup.
They pulled her long bangs back, braiding them and pinning them. One began to decorate her hair, trying to decide between flowers or perhaps a diamond hairpin with ribbons attached. The two maids exchanged a look before giving each other a nod. Quickly, she placed the diamond pin where the two braids connected and tied the ribbon into a bow.
Next, they began working on her face. A light rouge along her cheeks and a salve for her lips. Just enough to make her innocent features pop. Lumine stared at herself in the mirror, turning her head slightly to admire the women’s work.
She couldn’t remember the last time she’d worn makeup, perhaps she could indulge a bit more in it?
Once they were done, both when rushed out of the room in time for Noelle to step in, again fidgeting. “Your chaperone is here. He’s waiting for you in the drawing room.” She nervously declared. Lumine couldn’t help but sigh, walking over to her jewelry box and digging around for a pair of diamonds to go with her dress. After she found what she was looking for she made her way back over to the mirror and began to put the last pieces of her attire together.
“So, who is the unfortunate soul who is to keep watch over me this evening?” She asked with a tired tone, already desiring the evening to be over with.
Green eyes shifted uncomfortably, “Well if it’ll help to ease your mind, you know him, quite well actually.” She stated. Her friend stopped for a short moment as if thinking over a list of various men who it could be. Instead, she shook her head, an act of defeat on her part and a nonverbal way of saying she was ready to get this over with.
When her jewelry was fastened and she allowed Noelle to look her over, she followed the white-haired maid down the flight of stairs and towards the drawing room. Noelle looked down at her feet once they stopped at the door and allowed Lumine to enter. There, she stopped in her tracks, her mouth agape like a fish and no doubt would get her scolded for being improper.
“You traitor.” The comment slipped from her lips before she could even properly think. She placed her hands on her hips as she stepped forward, the man clearly engrossed in his sketchbook. “I see where your loyalties truly lie now, seeing as you’d openly go behind my back and scheme with my brother.” She glared down at the dirty blond.
Albedo peered up, giving an innocent smile to his old childhood friend. “You know I don’t scheme with anyone, he simply cashed in a favor.” His calm words made her want to take the sketchbook from his hands and throw it across the room. Before she could say anything, the man stood, closing his sketchbook, and placing it under his arm. “I believe we are to leave now if we are to make it in time.” He insisted, watching in silent amusement as his friend's lips turned downwards in a scowl.
Within the next few minutes, they were inside a carriage and on their way to Dilucs manor in the country. “What kind of favor did he cash in?” Lumine broke the silence that was beginning to suffocate her not even a few minutes into the ride, “Perhaps if I were to do the same for you, we could both go about this season with better things to occupy our time with. You can even tell my brother we attended several events together and I’ll stand by you.” Lumine smiled, trying her best to charm the man in front of her.
Instead, she watched as he picked up his sketchbook once more. “I believe I can’t do that Lumine, if your brother were to find out I’d lied to him he’d be quite upset with me. Besides,” He peered up at her before looking down, beginning to sketch the outline of her face, “He wants proof when he returns.”
Defeated, she slouched in her seat, crossing her arms and peering out the window as the carriage began to pull out of the city and towards the countryside. The sky had begun to fade into shades of orange, dark blue, and pink, and the moon was clearly preparing to take over the evening sky as it began to peek over the horizon.
From the scribbling of Albedo's pencil against paper, the darkening of the sky, and the aimless counting of trees they passed, Lumine had almost fallen asleep. However, as soon as her eyes began to droop, she was slung forward by the sudden halt of the carriage.
“Seems like we’re here.” Albedo had barely budged from his spot, nor did his pencil leave a scratch on the paper that wasn’t out of place. He closed his book before opening the door, barely allowing Lumine enough time to conduct herself properly before taking her hand to help her out. Once freed from her confinement she swallowed, a nervous frown appearing on her face. Albedo gave her his arm which she gratefully accepted.
At least with Albedo, she wouldn’t have to worry about him breathing down her neck all evening. Sure, he’d watch over her and make sure she got home safe, but like Lumine, he didn’t care much for events such as these. Which meant her brother must have offered him something he just couldn’t refuse.
As Lisa had mentioned, it was an outside event. Diluc had opened his home for refreshments and dancing, but most people could be found outside enjoying the last bit of warm weather before the night brought a chill. Lumine glanced around, there was no doubt he had spared no expense with the decorations, the music, and the refreshments. People were gathered, laughing merrily as they drank dandelion wine, and some were already inside dancing.
Albedo shifted beside her, clearly uncomfortable with such a large crowd. It didn’t help that within seconds various eyes were upon him. Lumine honestly felt a bit bad for him. No doubt mothers would be trying to circle him like vultures throughout the evening, because what an honor it would be if their daughters were to marry let alone dance with the chief alchemist of the knights.
However, the pity she felt quickly dispersed as she received the same gazes from the men. “Perhaps, we should go inside and grab your dance card.” He insisted, leading her away from the hungry eyes of suitors and towards the entrance of the manor. Inside was certainly much livelier. Young women in their expensive dresses had already taken the floor with possible suitors, while their mothers stood off to the side conversing.
It had only taken Albedo a moment to walk off and return with a small card, a pencil attached to the end. Gently taking her wrist, he slipped the card on. Once he knew it was secure, he was prepared to step away, no doubt already planning to find a dark corner to hide in. Though his actions were for naught as Lumine quickly snagged his arm. “Write your name in my card.” She demanded, flipping it open and extending it to him. Blue eyes stared dumbly at the piece of parchment.
“I mean this in a way, that I pray doesn’t offend you, but I don’t want to dance.” He stated, peering back up at his friend's tired golden eyes.
She’d scoff if there weren’t people around, so instead, she sighed heavily. “I don’t care to dance either, but if I have enough of my friends sign my card, then I don’t have to worry about anyone bothering me this evening. Please, Albedo, it’s the least you could do.” Lumine asked sweetly, a rather drastic change from her mood minutes ago. Instead of responding, Albedo's shoulders slumped, taking the small pencil and writing his name in the first slot.
The Lady smiled, allowing her friend to officially walk away, and giving her the opportunity to glance around the room. Firstly, she spotted Kaeya in a corner, surrounded by a group of women, which had been unsurprising. She’d get him to sign at some point, but she wanted the women around him to drain him first, to the point he’d sign and walk away in need of a breather instead of indulging her. Thus, she scanned again, taking note of Diluc who was on the second floor speaking with Adelinde about something.
Smiling, she quickly made her way toward the staircase. The quicker she got the signatures she needed, the quicker she could find Jean and Eula and enjoy her evening.
“I’m going to need you to once again, promise to be on your best behavior.” A soothing yet dark voice instructed. The man of such sound shifted his eyes towards the ginger man beside him as they started up the path leading towards the manor. A smile made itself known on the man's face, one that stirred unease in Zhongli’s stomach.
“Do you really have such low faith in me as to believe I can’t go a night without causing trouble?” Childe asked, brow raised. The question earned him a sigh and a steady shake of his friend’s head. They stopped before reaching the large group of people.
Amber eyes glared into icy blue ones. “My concern mostly lies with unease you may bring to the owner of this house. If it were up to him, I believe he would have rejected my request to bring you along. But your Queen has many of her agents established amongst this nation so no doubt he felt it would cause ill will between the two if he were to reject one of her Harbingers.” Zhongli stated. To which Childe had to admit, he had a point.
Though it wouldn’t have bothered him if he wasn’t able to tag along with his friend, no doubt would the Tsaritsa take offense to it. Thus, with a smile and a promise to be on his best behavior, they continued forward. It felt like no time that groups of women ceased their talking, glancing amongst each other before peering back towards the two gentlemen. In no time their chattering began once more, though it was quickly concluded when several broke away from their respected groups to approach said men.
The first to approach them was a woman and her young daughter, Pauline, she had introduced her. “She’s very skilled at flower arrangements Sir, no doubt can make a beautiful bouquet from flowers of any nation.” The girl's mother dotted. Pauline's face got red and a shy smile appeared on her lips. Dressed in a navy dress and her hair was pulled back to show off her youthful face. “Where might you be from, if I may be so daring?” Pauline mothers smile was beginning to seem more and more stretched by the minute.
“It’s wonderful to meet you,” Childe took the young girl’s hand and placed a kiss over her glove. He then gave his attention to her mother, “Snezhnaya is where I’m from. I’ll only be visiting your lovely nation for a few weeks before returning with my friend here back to Liyue. And once my time is done there, I shall be returning home.”
“With a wife perhaps?” She quickly followed up. Zhongli eyed his friend curiously, who did nothing but give the woman a tight smile.
Pauline gently nudged her mother, clearly embarrassed by such a question. “I’m sorry about my mother’s excitement. Perhaps you would care to assist me onto the dance floor at some point this evening is what she means? Get to know each other a bit better?” The nervous girl asked, extending her card upon her wrist. Both Childe and Zhongli exchanged a look, the elder man raising a curious brow.
The Harbinger smirked, took the small pencil, and scribbled his name upon the line. He watched as the girl's mother led her away and like moths to a flame, they began to surround the two gentlemen.
After signing two more dance cards, Zhongli managed to drag his friend into the manor. The pride that radiated off the younger man was already giving him a headache. “Do not get involved with the women here unless you are prepared to face the consequences of your actions.” He warned. “The last time I checked you’ve never spoken of marriage before. Even if you did choose a wife I would have suspected she’d be from Snezhnaya as well.” Zhongli commented as he grabbed two glasses of dandelion wine from a passing tray.
Childe hummed, taking a long sip of his drink. Not as good as fire water, which he had stashed away in his flask, but it’ll do for now. He’d probably steal a few sips later into the party. “How do you know if I don’t plan on taking a wife? My mother has mentioned in her past few letters that she hopes I’ll be bringing a daughter-in-law home to her.” The younger man stated, earning him an unamused look.
“What I am getting at, is I doubt a father or mother would willingly marry their daughter off to a Harbinger. But from the scene that was just displayed outside, depending they know who you are, then perhaps I’ll be proven wrong. There may be some who will crawl on their hands and knees for you to take their daughter. If so, then you just may take a wife back with you and your mother shall be proud.” Zhongli’s words dripped with static sarcasm as he took a sip of the wine before wandering off to find the head of the house.
If he were smart, Childe would have followed after, but instead, he decided to scan the room. These parties were certainly different than the ones her majesty hosted. First off, people weren’t draped in layers to stay warm, and second, it felt more lively. Certainly, the city of freedom. A low cough caught his attention, yet the Harbinger continued to look forward, eyes remaining on the dancing couples. Another cough and he had to hold himself back from sighing.
He glanced behind himself, another mother and her daughter smiling at him. Matching their smiles he once again fell into motion as the charming man from Snezhnaya.
“You seem cheerful,” Jean commented, genuinely surprised by Lumines relaxed state. The younger Lady smiled, taking a sip of her wine. Her cheeks were flushed from the alcohol, and her stomach was full from the food offered to her. And the best part? Her dance card was full, and she didn’t have to step on the floor once. Well, that was a lie. She did have to dance with Kaeya who for some reason had more energy than she expected by the time she approached him. She’d made sure to accidentally step upon his foot for the stunt he had pulled.
She had apologized innocently, even slipping in that it has been so long since she last danced at a party like this. His smile was smug, clearly amused by her fake apology. He’d told her not to worry, he was sure that she’d have plenty of parties to practice at. If they weren’t around so many people perhaps, she’d have another little accident. An action well deserved from both the comment and the innuendo that he had in fact spoken with her brother before he left once more for Sumeru.
Lumine wonders just how many of their friends her brother bribed to try and keep her out and about this season.
“I’m just living it up while I can,” Her words were slurred and both Jean and Eula exchanged a look of concern. “My sweet brother is trying to sell off his dear sister like I’m some type of horse for breeding.” She scoffed, her words causing Jean's face to burn in embarrassment and Eula to nearly choke on her wine. Once Lumine placed her glass back onto the table, Eula quickly reached over to slide it away, earning her a drowsy glare.
“Aether only wants for you to be happy, and I’m sure he understands you’re lonely. A husband and perhaps children will keep you plenty of company.” Jean had tried to defend, though the reason seemed lousy. She was very much aware Lumine had plenty of things to occupy her time from writing to friends. Her words earned her the same drowsy look of disappointment. Instead of responding, Lumine tossed her head back, sighing and slouching in her seat.
Jean bit back the temptation to scold the girl for her unruly behavior, but she doubted it’d get through her alcohol-addled mind. “If he knows I’m so lonely, why won’t he just come home more.” She mumbled. The bold question caused the other two women to tense. The three of them knew already why he wouldn’t return home.
However, it wasn’t something the other two women had to ever worry about. Being lonely that is. Jean was basically married to her work which provided her with plenty to do, and Eula couldn’t find a husband because of her family’s history. Thus, like the woman beside her, decided to dedicate her life to the knights. Lucky for her, she had a spunky roommate by the name of Amber who kept her entertained.
And no doubt Noelle would do the same once she passed her exam. She’d be off to live at the Knights Head Quarters. No worries about having to find a husband, just her and her work. “You’re both so lucky. You’re never lonely. You never have to worry about getting married.” Lumine mumbled in a drunken stupor.
“I don’t believe you’re thinking very clearly. I’ll go fetch you some water.” Eula stood, her cold eyes darting away from her friend as she headed towards the refreshment table. Jean had been tempted to call her back, to tell her that Lumine wasn’t thinking properly. However, she was already out of sight, lost within the crowd. The older woman sighed, gazing at the younger girl in both disappointment and pity.
Reaching across the table, Jean took Lumines hand, causing the girl the sit back up properly. “That wasn’t very nice. You know this time of year is sensitive for her. I expect you to apologize when she returns.” She couldn’t help but scold. Lumine felt a heavy weight upon her heart. She had been rather loose with her words. Even though Eula was serious about her work, doesn’t mean she had always planned it to be that way. Even she had tried her hand at finding a match when she’d first entered society.
“I’m sorry, to both of you. I know you both deal with a lot this time of year.” Lumine apologized to the woman across from her, the shame sobering her up slightly. Jean smiled, opening her mouth to speak again, but was quickly cut off by the call of her name.
One of the knights smiled down at her, extending his hand in a silent request for a dance. Jean gave Lumine a look, more than ready to decline the invitation until the younger girl waved her off. “Go, have fun. I’ll speak with Eula when she gets back. I’ll be fine, trust me.” She gave her a wry smile.
The Acting Grand Master remained quiet for a few seconds before finally turning her attention away to take the knight's hand.
Lumine watched as they walked away, her smile quickly dropping when they were out of sight. She had very much been out of line. Gold eyes shifted towards the wine her friend had pulled away from her. Reaching across the table, she quickly snatched the glass and downed the red substance. No doubt Eula would take her time to try and cool off and, in such time, Lumine believed she should do the same. Though, her attempt would be to help ease her foggy mind.
Thus, with shaky legs, Lumine stood and made her way to the closes exit. She tried her best to walk properly, the last thing she needed was rumors about her being caught drunk at the first gala of the season. Luckily, the closes door was only a few steps away, the outside greeting her with a chill. No wonder so many people were beginning to file inside, the night air was letting everyone know that it wasn’t exactly spring yet.
However, she was grateful for the cool breeze. Her cheeks were definitely feeling cooler and the fresh air was already helping her head.
“Have you seen him yet?” The whispers of two young debutantes caught her attention as they conversed nearby. “He’s quite handsome and comes from Snezhnaya is what I’m hearing. Finally, someone interesting shows up.”
Lumine glanced to her right, noticing the pair sitting at a table with their mothers not far off, having a discussion of their own. “Snezhnaya? So, he must be a merchant?” The other girl asked excitedly. The giggling between the two was doing little to help with Lumines impending headache. She would certainly be asking Brook for a light breakfast tomorrow.
Instead of continuing to listen in, Lumine made her way down the manor steps, coming to a row of grape vines. Happily, she stepped in and sat amongst the vines. “He hasn’t mentioned what he does for work, but it must pay handsomely if they’ve sent him to Liyue.” Her ears picked up the giggling of the girls once more.
She certainly hadn’t moved far enough.
“He doesn’t have a wife at home either. I tried to get him to sign my dance card but it appeared he was already taken for the rest of the evening.” The girl had pouted. “But mark my words, I’ll make sure I’m first in line when the next gala rolls around.” Her depressed state didn’t last long, and both girls soon fell into a fit of laughter. Her friend had even stated she wanted a chance to dance with him the next go-round.
Oh, the bullet Lumine wishes she could dodge if this is what she had to deal with the next few months.
Once she felt her mind becoming more clear, the Lady closed her eyes and leaned her head back against a post. The giggling had ended, signaling the girls had most likely gone inside, but the low chatting of couples and friends outside near the front left Lumine feeling safe enough. Opening her eyes once more, she peered forward towards the lake through the dead vines. She could barely make out a couple and a chaperone that were walking along the water's edge, and the sight brought back memories of Lumines debut season. Though she had been on walks with plenty of gentlemen who were interested in her hand, Aether would never allow them to traverse to such a romantic location.
Instead, he usually glared at the back of the men’s heads, following no less than six steps behind. How awkward her first year was, just the thought made her face burn. It didn’t help that they were only allowed to walk the streets close to her home either. She groaned, curling her legs close to her body.
The sound of rushed footsteps quickly drove such horrid memories away, especially when the said person came to a stop right beside where she was sitting. She opened her eyes, peering towards the stranger, and staring at a red-haired man who seemed to be out of breath, his face dripping with sweat. How charming.
The smart thing to do would be to slip away as quietly as possible. If anyone were to even see them next to each other alone, no doubt would a rumor start that she had been found in a scandalous situation with some random man. It was one of the last things she needed this early on in the season and no doubt people were already sniffing around to kick off the latest drama. But instead, she continued to gaze upon him.
His face was decorated with freckles, blue eyes that appeared rather bright under the moonlight, and his attire seemed a bit wrinkled from no doubt dancing having taken its toll. She’d never seen him before. Narrowing her eyes she finally asked, “The man from Snezhnaya I take it?”
The sudden voice caused the man to peer around quickly, before glancing down. Quickly, he took a seat beside her, much to her distaste. “You’d have to be correct my Lady. Seems like the women here are something else when it comes to men who are from another nation.” He huffed, a shacky laugh following after. Lumine raised a brow at this.
“Obviously, who wouldn’t want their daughter to wed a wealthy handsome man from over sea’s?” She’d asked sarcastically, however, the man smiled at her.
He raised a brow, “You think I’m handsome?” His tone was smug yet curious, and it made her eye twitch. She’d known this stranger for less than two minutes and could already tell that the women from tonight had fed his ego enough. Maybe she should feed him to the wolves by rushing inside and letting them know of his hiding spot.
Instead of responding with words, she scoffed. “You know, for a split second, I felt pity for you, as I know those women can be quite hungry for fresh meat, especially at the beginning of a season. But however, I now retract such emotion and must demand that you go find another row of grape vines to go hide in.” She scooched away. However, she shot the man a look as he followed right after, though remaining a comfortable distance.
“No, no I don’t think I will. This row is just fine. Has a pretty and sane woman to speak with here.” He responded with charm even though he was still trying to catch his breath.
She gave him a look of skepticism, “And you believe I wish to stay and converse with you?” Lumine asked, mouth opening and closing in disbelief. The audacity of this man. Sadly, her words didn’t cause his smile to falter.
“A feisty one too, some men find that to be rather attractive. Much more attractive than having a girl’s mother line up and trying to sell their daughters off to you. Speaking of which, are all families like that here? In Snezhnaya, obviously, women wish to marry, but I don’t think I’ve been tossed around in so many dances before. Apparently, many of you here are musically inclined as well.” The stranger asked. Lumine had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep from smiling in amusement. Yes, most certainly were that desperate, but she wasn’t going to tell him that.
Instead, she silently stood. It seemed that action was enough to make the man's smile drop. “Don’t worry, I’m sure your luck will get better as the season continues. In no time you’ll find a sane and feisty wife, perhaps in another row since you have rudely taken mine.” She insisted. Instead of letting the stranger speak, she grabbed the edge of her dress, bowing slightly and wishing him a good evening before quickly rushing back up the stairs.
As she walked away, Childe couldn’t help but lean out of the row, watching as she disappeared into the crowd. Though, he quickly hid once more as a group of giggling girls walked by the door.
Inside, she quickly spotted Albedo, who lingered near the table she had once sat at. He was speaking with Jean, and both appeared to be glancing around. Lumine took note that Eula still had not returned. However, she shook such thoughts from her mind and rushed over to her friends. They were obviously surprised to see the young woman pop out of nowhere, but before they could ask any questions, Lumine beat them to it. “I decided to step out for some fresh air and realized I still feel a bit light-headed. Albedo, perhaps you are also ready to retire for the night and wish to take me home?” She requested innocently.
The man in question released a sigh of relief, a silent agreement that it would be his pleasure. However, before walking away Lumine turned to Jean. “I’m sorry for disappearing, and again I’m sorry about what I said earlier. When she returns, perhaps you could tell Miss Lawrence that I’d like to speak with her when she’s free?” She asked.
Jean stared for a moment before giving the girl a smile, “I’ll pass on your apology and give her your message.” She confirmed. Lumine smiled, allowing Albedo to take her arm and lead her away toward the entrance. However, again she came to a stop next to a group of girls. Her friend gave her a curious look, clearly confused by her sudden halt. Even the girls who had been conversing ceased their words, to instead stare back.
Thinking about her actions for a moment, she smiled. “If you’re looking for the Snezhnayan man, I believe I saw him step out a few minutes ago.” She whispered. The girl's eyes lit up, all glancing around at each other before one just so happened to suggest she needed some fresh air.
Quickly, they all followed each other out, laughing happily and beginning their search. Once they had scattered, Albedo once again led her toward the exit and towards their awaiting carriage. Once inside and the carriage began to move, he raised a brow at her. “A Snezhnayan man?” He’d asked. No doubt he hadn’t talked to enough people to learn of the newcomer at tonight’s gala.
Lumine smirked, “There’s nothing to worry about, I just noticed him when I was stepping back inside. No need to think too hard, I doubt I’ll ever see the man again.” She stated. Albedo watched curiously as she relaxed in her seat, closing her eyes and allowing the silence to drift her mind elsewhere.
