Chapter 1: prologue

Chapter Text

"A ship? Have you gone mad, Izuku?" Ochako had crossed her arms over her chest in both disbelief and exasperation.

"I just thought-" Izuku began.

"Sure could've fooled me," Ochako grumbled.

"Just think, you and I, sailing the sea together! A life we've only ever dreamed of!" Izuku said, excitedly.

“I know not who that dream belongs to, but it certainly isn’t mine. I hardly believe you’ve thought of me at all.”

“Ochako, my darling, I-” Izuku tried once again.

“What life awaits me on a boat, Izuku? What do I have to look forward to? Not my family, nor our friends, not…” She looked down at her hands where they were busy with her petticoat, “Not children.”

“Me. I await you. Our life together awaits you. Is that not enough for you?” Izuku tried. Ochako said nothing more.

They went to bed together as they usually did. It was quiet, but it usually was and Izuku thought nothing of it. They weren’t always happy, but they were comfortable. Well, they were never happy, but they knew what they had been getting into.

“A marriage of business,” his father had said, and Izuku and Ochako had both known that they were in no place to disobey their fathers.

They had been friends in the beginning. They would take horseback rides together late into the evening, just to send Izuku’s staff away for the evening and bake until morning.

Whenever they were supposed to be spouses, there was a shift. Izuku knew, but he didn’t want to admit it. There was an expectation that he was to be Ochako’s husband. Namely, that he should be a good one.

And the big secret to being a ‘good husband’ that Ochako and their father’s were waiting on? For Izuku to give her a baby.

In the morning when he awoke, he was alone, with only a single sheet of parchment covered in Ochako’s swirly penmanship to wish him a ‘good morning’.

Izuku -

For what it’s worth, it is not enough for me.
