Work Text:
Kenny slammed the door before any walkers got in.
"Jesus…" he looked around. "This place is a mess…" It seems like he was in a garage.
After being separated from Lee and everyone, he made it out of the horde, but had to look for supplies to try and get out of Savannah.
He noticed that there were some dead people. One was a walker behind a window. It was dead though. The other one…
"Wait, I think that's a bat?" Kenny decided to go pick it up. "Ugh… geez…" he looked up at the dead person in front of the bat.
"... Oh… Oh, no, Lee…"
He looked at the teacher who was bleeding from his head, having his remaining arm handcuffed to a pole and looked so dull. "Oh, fuck… Lee…" Kenny felt terrible seeing Lee like this.
He knew Lee was doomed after he was bit, but… oh, God.
"... Hey, buddy." Kenny decided to sit down for a bit. Jesus Christ, I'm talking to a corpse! "How… how ya doing?"
…
"Yeah, no answer, heh." Kenny knew he couldn't really say anything. Not anymore. "Uh- I… I made it out, thankfully. I just… I hid for a bit and I was looking around and… here you are." Kenny scratched his head.
"... There's no gun in here?" Kenny searched around. "... So, I guess someone put you out, huh." I just really hope it wasn't Clementine. Kenny pinched his nose. "Oh… I'm so fucking sorry this happened to you, Lee… I…" he looked at the corpse that was across from him. "It shouldn't have been you. You deserve better, man."
If Lee could speak, he would have said something such as "You're a good guy, it's not your fault!" Or "I should've been more careful." …
"I should've treated you better. You did everything you could and I just… I didn't deserve you." Kenny looked down. He thought for a second. "Hey, if… If I ever find Clem, I'll… I'll take care of her. It's all I can do to thank you for… everything. I-"
He started to hear walker noises growing louder. He knew he couldn't stay. But… he just wanted to say goodbye to Lee.
"I can't stay, buddy. But just know that I… I'm gonna miss you. And I'm sorry." Kenny got up, continued to search for some supplies and packed it up. He checked the window. Yep, that walker is dead.
But before he left, he looked at Lee for one last time. His face was a bit pink, but he might as well say it. It's too late, anyways.
"Hey, I love you, man." Kenny turned back around, toughened up and started leaving. He stopped for a second, thinking, and then left.
If Lee's ghost was around, he would have loved to hear those words and reply with a relieved "I love you, too."
But now he's gone.
It's gone.
