Work Text:
Laying on his bed was Liam, phone in hand as he adjusted to lay on his stomach, pillow under his arms to prop himself up. "Haha, no, I think I might be going to bed soon. I had a long day, it was so draining!" He spoke into the microphone, an underlying happy tone in his voice.
"Aw, really?" A voice came through the speaker in reply. "Hopefully tomorrow gives you more of a break."
"Yeah, you said it." Liam laughed softly. "Hey, maybe we could meet up tomorrow and go somewhere? I know we just hung out yesterday, but I miss you."
The call went silent for a few moments and Liam waited patiently for a response. Though, when he heard the person on the other side sigh, he grew a little nervous. "Liam, there's something really important I need to tell you."
"What? What is it?" He spoke, concern lacing his voice. "You're worrying me, Lumine." He laughed a little, unsure of what she was going to say.
"I.." Lumine trailed off for a moment, collecting herself. "I think we should break up."
Silence.
Liam couldn't believe what he heard. She was joking, right? He thought things were going so well. "Wh— But why? I'm.. confused."
"I'm moving." Was all Lumine said in reply.
"We can do long distance then! We don't have to break up just because you're moving. I mean, you're not going that far, are you?" He immediately interjected.
"Liam, please. I am moving a ways away, and I just don't think long distance would work for me." She continued, standing her ground.
He could feel himself tearing up as she continued to speak. He moved to sit up, feeling it was more comfortable, and willed his tears away, not wanting to cry. "Well— Where are you going? I.. I can come with! I really wouldn't mind."
"No. I'm not telling you, and you can't come with. I know you'd regret it if you did." Lumine shut his idea down immediately. "Just— You have to let me go, okay? It just isn't going to work, I'm sorry."
Again, silence.
Liam couldn't properly process what was happening, tears pricking his eyes again, but this time he couldn't be bothered to stop them. "Okay," was the only thing he could muster enough strength to say, his dejectedness apparent in his voice.
"Thank you for understanding. Really, I'm sorry it had to end like this, but stuff happens and it just couldn't be helped." Lumine sighed, "bye, Liam. Maybe we can stay in touch as friends." That was the last thing she said before she hung up.
Now left with no feeling but sadness, Liam set his now silent phone on his nightstand before laying on his side. The sadness he felt only made room for more tears to fall from his eyes as he laid there, curled up and defeated. His shoulders shook as he cried quietly, all the energy drained from him after what had just happened.
Eventually, he had fallen asleep. Still curled up with a tear stained pillow.
