It hardly seemed fair for one person to contain so much regret but here he was overflowing and bursting at the seams with it.
Somehow he always makes room for more.
Pushing Adrian away was the biggest mistake he’s ever made. He’d felt himself doing it, but he couldn’t seem to stop at the time. The two of them could have had the world if he would have just kept his stupid mouth shut.
The younger man was the single greatest thing to ever happen to him in his miserable life, and he ruined it with words he should never have uttered in the heat of the moment.
Three small words and one massive lie.
“I hate you.”
The younger man had always been so patient with him, but that must have been the final nail in the coffin because the next day he was gone.
It’s been two months since and he still checks in on Adrian from afar. He knows he should stop; the other man has clearly moved on. Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and according to Economos, V’s planning to spend it with Robert DuBois.
Fucking DuBois. Of course it was DuBois. First, he almost stole Peacemaker’s life, and now he’s stolen the only person he’s ever loved. Adrian deserved to be happy, sure, but did he have to find happiness with DuBois of all people?
He figures maybe this is what he deserves after all he’s done. And Robert DuBois being the one to do it to him, well, it was all too poetic.
Maybe the other man was the better option for V in the long run. DuBois could fight with him, honor him, cherish him, love him, and make him happy in ways Chris couldn’t.
And nothing mattered more than Adrian’s happiness. If that meant being with Robert then he’d be okay with it, even if it meant letting him go.
