Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

A young woman quickly parked her car as she turned it off. Her phone was in-between her shoulder and ear as she collects her purse and unbuckles herself.

"I'm sorry Joe, but I can't come in 12 minutes. I have to go to my son's school for a meeting with the principal."

Shutting the door once she gets out, Lillia looks down at her outfit. It was her typical work outfit, which was a pair of black jeans and an obnoxiously bright colored shirt, she wore a long sleeved shirt under it. Her hair was already in a tight bun ontop of her head as she rushes up to the doors of the school.

"No come on Joe, it's a family emergency! Please just-"

Lillia bit her tougne as she wanted to swear at the screaming man. Of course he said the two words she hated the most.

"Your fired!"

A click of the phone indicated that he hung up on her. Sighing in defeat already before shutting her phone. Pressing the buzzer, lillia looked around the school.

"Central Elementary, what can I do you for?"

Lillia leans down slightly closer to the buzzer.

"I'm Lillia Compton, the Princple called"

The door buzzed and a loud click indicated for her to walk in. As she walked in she spotted a metal detector. Taking off her silver bracelet and purse, she placed them on the table before walking through. The two security guards watched her like a hawk before clearing her.

Lillia walked inside the front office and looked at the two small boys infront of her. One had his hand all wrapped up while the other was looking to the floor. Lillia started to head over to the child that was looking down.

"Miss. Compton"

The voice startled her slightly as she looks over at the male that called for her. Taking in a deep breath as she follows after him in the office.

"10 fights, at least 30 detentions and 4 out of school suspension. Miss. Compton I don't know what else we can do for your son's education. I'm sorry but we are expelling him from our school"

The male got straight to the point after she had shut the door. Her brown eyes widen slightly.

"You got to be joking"

She blinks acouple times as her mind reboots to understand what was going on.

"I am serious Miss. Compton. Ethan needs a new outlet for his anger, but this school cannot take anymore of this reckless behavior."

"I mean have you figured out why he was fighting in the first place."

Lillia asked while her hands tighten against her purse.

"We have, but again this isn't his first offense. I understand times is hard for you. Do you have any family?"

Lillia let go of her purse as she rubbed her forehead.

"I Dont know. I think an old lady out in Lousiana"

She mumbles out as the room was quiet. The principle sighs before standing up and walks to the door. Opening it for her.

"Have a good day Miss. Compton, may your life get easier"

Lillia take a moment to herself before she stands up again. Giving the principal a tight smile before walk out. The small boy looked up from the ground as he heard the door again. His blue eyes connecting to the warm brown eyes of his mother. She walked over to him, holding her hand out for him to grab.

They both walked out of the school and to the beat up car. Ethan opened the door and threw his backpack to the other side of the car. Both Compton's buckled up, as Lillia starts the car and pulls away from the school.

"Didn't get lunch, wanna get some chicken nuggets and go to our place?"

Lillia asked while glaning at the middle mirror and the road. Ethan smiled at him mom and nods. Driving to the closest McDonald's, she orders the usual they always get. Then she drove them both to the local park.

Getting out of the car and locking it up, they walk to the pond in the park. Setting up the food as Ethan plays at the park for a bit, when Lillia waves him over to eat.

They both eat the food in silence until she looks at him. The look she gave him made him look down.

"Candice got new braids in her hair. She looked really nice with them on, but Russell didn't think so. He started tugging on them really hard. I couldn't just leave that situation alone. So I slammed his hand in the locker...acouple times"

Lillia took a deep breath in and then out as she looks at her son. So much of her was in him, she didn't know if it was because she was rasing him or just because it was fate. Reaching over she rubs his head causing him to whine she push her hand away. They both laughed after a moment.

"Where am I gonna go to school now"

"You let me worry that..not you"

They both finished with the food before they threw away there garbage. They watched as the day goes by for a moment. Both savoring eachother. Ethan leans against his mom as she wraps her arm around him, bringing them closer.

Now in the beloved car, they both drove back home. Ethan excitedly explaining his day before the fight. Lillia laughed at his story when they got home and up the stairs. She looked at her door only for her heart to sink in her stomach. A bright pink eviction notice tapped against her door. Grabbing it Lillia unlocked the door for them both to go inside.

The house was going to sale, she she had to move out in 30 days. Is what the letter said, it slipped out of her fingers as she sat on the couch in slight defeat. Ethan cuddled up next to her as they sat quietly again. Lillia had so many ideas running through her head. The sound of her phone alerted both of them.

"Hello?"

"Is this Lillia Compton?"

"Yes...who is this?"

Lillia leaned forward slightly to get up from her spot and walked over to the kitchen. Wanting more privacy. The heavy southern accent vs her Northern one.

"Mr. Lancaster, I am calling to inform you about your aunt's passing."

Folding her arms, lillia grew more and more confused.

"I'm sorry?"

"No I am sorry, Sue was a beautiful and wonderful woman. Now the Compton family has been a staple in Bon Temps and we want to keep the Compton family to be able to keep the family home. It took alot of digging to find you."

Lillia held against the counter tightly as she listened. A family she wasn't even close to have a house for her. It felt like she could breath for a moment.

"Miss. Compton I am calling to see of you would-"

"Yes!"

Lillia said quickly cutting him off. For the next days, Lillia and Ethan worked on packing and cleaning.

"So we are moving south?"

Ethan as they both packed up a moving van that was going with them. Lillia was looking at the newspaper she had gotten when she drove to see the house. It looked bad, very bad but it would be a project for the both of them.

A yellow highlighter in on hand as she circled and called for jobs. She saw a waitress ad for a bar and grill, but wanted that as a last resort.

"Um yea, a new place and new people. I'm sorry that we have to do this. Thank you for being such a great sport about this"

Lillia leans over and gives him a kiss on his forehead as he places his box down. She picked up her phone again as she Dialed the number for the job she looked at. Both of them watching the sun set as she continued to wait. Before she hanged up, someone answered.

"Fangtasia this is Pam, what can I do for you"

Lillia felt shivers go down her body as she looks down at the ad again.

"Hey, I'm Lillia Compton. I'm calling because an Ad in the paper. You guys are looking for a day walker"

"Hmm we are..are you human?"

"Um. Yea"

"Then your hired, you start next week Friday at 8am. Come to the address in the ad."

"Th-"

Lillia went to thank the female but was swiftly hung up on. A vampire's worker was her second to last resort, now she started to work double time to get down to Lousiana.

It had Been 2 days since the phone call as Lillia stands in the empty house. Ethan hugging around her waist as they both relived the memories of the home. She looks down at Ethan before patting his back.

They were driving as they soon see the leaving sign of Buffalo, New York.

"Bye Buffalo....Hello Bon Temps"
