Work Text:

The strong smell of something burning hits Kaito’s nostrils the second he steps into the apartment.

He sighs. “I said you really didn’t have to,” he says in lieu of greetings, removing his jacket.

Just as he’s about to walk to the kitchen, his girlfriend stops him and threatens him with a spatula pointing at him. “Don’t come near me!”

“You’re making it sound like I wronged you.”

“You did.”

“No, I did not.”

“Yes, you did.”

She is trying to gaslight him. Typical Megurine Luka. If something doesn’t go her way and she knows she is in the wrong, she tries to turn the situation to her advantage. At the start of their relationship, it worked so well on Kaito as he wanted nothing but to be on Luka’s good side. When he recalls those moments, he cringes at how pathetic he was. He was so whipped for her. She had him wrapped around her finger.

She still does, but now at least Kaito knows how not to let Luka have the upper hand.

“I don’t like how you’re always trying to control me.”

Kaito can’t help but laugh, earning Luka’s dead glare. “I just said you didn’t have to cook something for my birthday. We both know you’re a bad cook.”

“Now you’re insulting me. How great.” She turns her back to him with a huff and goes into the kitchen.

“Babeeee,” he drags the syllable and follows her, still laughing. She is more upset at herself than mad at him because, as he said, she really is a bad cook and she knows it too well. But still, it’s cute that she tried to cook dinner for them. “What—"

Nevermind. Luka should be banned from entering the kitchen ever again.

“What happened here?” He warily asks, taking sight of the mess in front of him.

“Happy birthday?” Luka says, a tentative smile on her face. Kaito is having none of that, though. “We need to clean up I guess.”

“Why ‘we’? It’s your fault.”

Luka whines. “We’re a couple! My problem is also your problem. It’s our problem!” She says like it’s the most logical thing.

“Well, it just became my kitchen. You’re banned from here forever.”

“So you have no problem cleaning your kitchen?” And she leaves the crime scene with these words, her long pink hair slapping Kaito’s face as she turns on her heels to promptly leave before he can stop her.

He laughs again. She’s cute. “Just order something on uber eats. You’re paying though.”

“I’m what!?”

“Paying.”

“Sorry I can’t hear you over the sound of all my feelings for you!”

“What are you even talking about?”

Kaito takes a quick look at the living room and sees Luka throwing herself on the couch, phone in her hands — and Kaito’s credit card resting on her laps. She giggles to herself.

He shakes his head fondly.

“Happy birthday to me,” he whispers to himself. He hopes he will spend many other birthdays with her.
