Summary:

In the weeks up to and after order 66, Hunter grapples with his feelings for you.

Notes:

This is a prequel to “Exile”, but can be read before or after it, or on its own.

After posting Exile to tumblr, I got a half-joking comment that demanded a prequel from Hunters PoV, and I already had the idea half formed in my head anyway, so their comment cemented the idea for me. I think I managed to not have too much Pain in this one for a change!

“Crosshair, please,” you said, and the need in your voice was obvious.

“Patience, kitten,” Crosshair responded, chuckling when you whined.

The two of you had kept your voices low, and anyone who was listening would have only heard soft murmurs and nothing else. Hunter, however, was not so lucky. He could hear every word, every sigh, every soft gasp. What’s more, he could fucking smell you. And it ate away at him. In his own bunk above you, he sighed before hiding his head under his pillow in an attempt to muffle the high, quick breathing that was coming up from below. He wanted to hope that you two would be done quickly, but the Maker wasn’t always so kind.

The Maker must have taken pity on him, however; much to Hunter’s relief, the sound of conscious breaths had changed to soft snores after only another minute or two. Unable to sleep, he groaned and sat up, leaning back against the bunk wall and staring at his closed privacy curtain. The sounds of sex had stopped, but the scent of it lingered, hardening his cock underneath his sweatpants. He bit back a low growl, and after waiting to hear if anyone else was awake, he sighed again, resigned to it.

As he shimmied out of his pants, he was disgusted with himself. Part of him knew that his aching cock was a completely natural, unconscious biological response. But that wasn’t the only reason.

From the day you were assigned to his unit, Hunter had always found you attractive, almost distractingly so. He did his best to ignore it, but over time the physicality of his desire for you morphed into something else. Something he couldn’t push away or ignore. The first time he’d walked in on you and Crosshair, his chest roared with jealousy, startling him.

He shouldn’t have been so surprised, he had thought later on. He was wholly infatuated with you. You could hold your own in battle and keep up with him and his brothers, you were observant and decisive, and you always fought your hardest. Off the battlefield though, you were also kind, attentive, and patient. And he adored you for it.

But, you had chosen Crosshair. Hunter cursed himself every time he heard you two, or even saw you in close proximity. He should have acted upon his feelings. If he had, maybe he wouldn't be the one pining away after you while alone in his bunk with only a hand for company. He’d be the one whose name you would cry out, the one getting close enough to taste you. Good Maker, how he wanted to taste you.

Like so many other nights, Hunter spat into his palm and began to stroke himself to the thought of finally getting to be the one responsible for all the pretty sounds you make. Your soft skin a stark contrast to his calloused hands, the sound of your soft gasps and moans, the fucking taste of you on his tongue. He sped up his movements, dipping further into his well-worn fantasy of you.

What would you feel like? Bouncing on his hard cock, your tight heat surrounding him. A look of ecstasy and maybe even love in your eyes as he’s kissing every part of you he can reach. Your voice softly saying his name, repeating it like a mantra as he makes you cum.

The thought of you murmuring into his ear, drunk on the afterglow and clinging to him, was finally enough to push him over the edge. Hunter came with a grunt, hissing through his teeth and closing his eyes. Spent, he relaxed and tried to even out his breathing. He tilted his head back against the wall, staring at the ceiling as he cooled down.

After a minute or two, he finally felt sleep headed his way. Ignoring his own mess, he lied back down with a heavy sigh. He’d have to settle for being with you in his dreams, which he knew wasn’t going to change.

Things did indeed stay the same, until a single order changed everything.

The weeks after Hunter watched a young Jedi run for his life were a blur. So much had happened, he could hardly keep it all straight in his head. Omega, Crosshair leaving, Salucami, Cid; it was too much at once. He pushed his own troubles down, however. His remaining brothers needed him, as did Omega.

You needed him too. In fact, you needed him the most out of everyone.

Cid had allowed you all to stay in the empty rooms she had over the cantina. When Hunter couldn’t sleep, which was unfortunately far too often, he’d ease his anxious mind by periodically checking to make sure everyone was in their rooms. Echo, Tech, Wrecker, and Omega were all accounted for, as was typical at this late hour. However, it was very unusual for you to not be in bed, and Hunter was concerned.

He’d already looked around downstairs, and he didn’t think you would be reckless enough to go out alone this late at night, so that narrowed his search down significantly. As he made his way to the roof, he heard you before he saw you. Soft sobs left your throat, along with the occasional hiccup. Following this, Hunter eventually found you sitting near an edge, staring out at the city around you without seeing it. Hunter hesitated, but when you glanced back at him for just a moment, he saw the hurt and confusion in your eyes and knew he couldn’t leave you alone.

He sat close to you, but not too close, and quietly said your name. “I won’t ask what’s wrong, I think we both know the answer to that,” he said.

You sniffled and wiped your eyes as you laughed humorlessly. “Don’t bother asking if I’m okay either,” you said.

“That doesn’t leave me many other options,” he said, making you chuckle a little and shake your head at him.

Neither of you spoke. You watched the stars and ships overhead, and Hunter watched you, unsure of what to do.

Eventually, when you did speak, your voice was low, and you sounded exhausted. “Did I ever tell you? Until I was assigned to this squad, I’d never left Coruscant before,” you said.

“Really?” Hunter said, unconsciously moving close to you.

“Yeah,” you said, glancing over at him. “I couldn’t leave on my own, so I figured a stint with the GAR would do it. Obviously it took them a while to assign me to something worth a damn,” you said, also moving closer to him without realizing it.

“Glad to hear you think we’re worth something,” Hunter says, and you chuckle again.

“Of all the places I’ve been in the Galaxy, I never would have guessed I’d end up here,” you said with a sigh.

“Ord Mantel?” Hunter asked. You actually did laugh that time.

“Well, that too I guess,” you said, before pausing for a few seconds. You seemed to be choosing your words carefully. “I guess ‘end up like this’ would be more accurate,” you eventually said.

“I’m sorry,” Hunter said, moving closer to you again. His words caught you by surprise, and when you looked at him, confused, he explained himself. “For dragging you into this. I know it’s not what you signed up for,” he said. “I’m actually surprised you haven’t just left and gone home yet,” he said, his eyes meeting yours.

“Don’t really have one to go to,” you said. “Besides, I wouldn’t want to leave another void in the squad,” you said, then swallowed hard.

Hunter knew what you meant without asking. He said your name and turned his body to face you. Once you had done the same, he spoke and said “We’ll get him back. I’ll admit I don’t know how, but I promise you, we’ll bring Crosshair home.”

Tears spilled out of your eyes again. “I don’t think we even can,” you said, sounding defeated.

“What makes you so certain?” Hunter asked, frowning.

“He shot at us!” You said, your voice wavering.

“That wasn’t really him,” Hunter said, but he sounded like he didn’t believe his own words. “He’s still chipped,” he said.

“As far as we know,” you muttered.

Without really thinking about it, Hunter gently cupped your face with a hand and brushed a stray tear away with his thumb. “I know him. Whatever he’s doing right now, that’s not Crosshair,” he said, a little more conviction behind his words. He realized he was still touching your face and abruptly pulled his hand away. He’s surprised, however, when you scoot closer to him, close enough that your legs were pressed together, and take his hand into yours. “I’m not giving up on him yet,” he said, feeling bold enough to wrap an arm around your shoulders.

“Then I guess I’m not either,” you said, shifting and resting your head against his chest.

The two of you sat quietly like that for some time. Being so close to you made Hunter’s heart pound. He desperately wanted to hold you tighter, kiss you and tell you everything would be alright, but he held himself back. You were going through so much already, you didn’t need him adding anything unwanted to it. This was more than enough.

Sitting on the roof with you became a nightly thing after only a few days. A week or so had passed after your initial conversation up there. After the others had gone to sleep, Hunter made his way up to you, and once he had, you both sat closely, like you had that first night. Sometimes you two would talk, telling each other stories until the sun peeked over the horizon. Other times, like tonight, you would just sit quietly together, enjoying the rare moments of peace with one another.

An hour or so passed in comfortable silence, then you sat up, bringing Hunter’s attention to you. There was an odd look in your eye that he’d never seen before. You took one of his hands into both of yours.

“Thank you,” you said quietly. “For just being here for me. I don’t feel as hopeless when you’re with me,” you said.

“It’s funny,” Hunter said, after a moment of thought. “I don’t feel so lost when I’m with you.”

You watch his face, expecting him to say something else. He could feel your eyes on him, and debated intensely with himself for a moment, then said your name.

“Yes?” You said, leaning closer to him, which did not go unnoticed.

“I,” he said, then paused for a few seconds. He took a deep breath. “I need to tell you something. I should have said something a long time ago,” he said.

The next thing he knew, your lips were on his. You pulled away, but not too far, and smiled at him. “I know,” you said.

“How?” Hunter asked, startled. He thought he’d been hiding it well.

You giggled. “Omega told me. She’s a lot more observant than we thought,” you said.

Hunter shook his head in disbelief. “No kidding,” he said, looking away.

“She didn’t need to. I’ve known for a while,” you said.

He whips his head back in your direction. “I-,” he started to say, but you cut him off with another soft kiss.

“It’s okay, Hunter,” you said.

You shifted yourself and moved to sit in his lap, kissing him again, but with more fervor than before. He eagerly reciprocated, but when his hands automatically moved to your hips, he stopped himself and pulled away.

“You… you don't have to,” he said. You interrupted him again with a kiss.

“I want to,” you said, looking him in the eye. You brushed a stray lock of his hair behind his ear, and he barely held back a shiver. “Please, Hunter,” you said in a whisper.

“I’ve been wanting to hear you say that for so fucking long,” he said, his heart rate kicking up and his hardening cock straining in the confines of his armor.

“Then I’ll say it again,” you said, reaching down and unclipping his codpiece. “I want you, Hunter. Please,” you said, whispering again into his ear and boldly palming him over his undersuit.

Finally, he was getting what he wanted so badly. And not only that, but you asked him for it. The realization made his already tenuous self control slip away entirely, and he grabbed your hips, pulling you closer to his chest as he kissed you deeply. Your tongues met, and he groaned into your mouth. His hands traveled all over your body, fingers tracing the curve of your spine and tangling into your hair before eventually settling on the waistband of your pants and tugging at it.

You pulled away, panting, and quickly freed yourself from your clothes. You wiggled out of your shirt and threw it over your shoulder, then ground yourself down into his lap, moaning. With a growl that sent shivers down your back, Hunter reached down and explored your hot sex with one hand while freeing his cock with the other. You glanced down and groaned at the sight.

You managed to get out of his grasp, moving to get on your knees in front of him. You took hold of his cock and it throbbed against your palm. You leaned down towards it, looking up at him. He nodded once, and you took him into your throat. He got a little deeper with each movement of your head, and when he hit your gag reflex he cursed as your throat spasmed around him.

He held the back of your head and firmly pushed you off of him, his cock leaving your mouth with a soft pop. He gripped your shoulders as he got down onto his own knees, leveling with you again. He kissed your lips, then your jaw, your throat, and your chest. Ignoring the rough texture of the roof beneath him, Hunter laid on his back and pulled you into a squat over his face.

You barely had time to find your balance before he plunged his tongue into you. You were everything he’d imagined and more. He groaned as he tasted you, getting drunk off your intoxicating smell. He felt you clench around his tongue, and he grabbed your hips, yanking you down onto your knees and completely smothering himself in you as you came. You cried out his name as your hips ground down onto him.

Hunter had to breathe eventually, and, keeping his hands on your hips, quickly rolled you onto your back, positioning himself above you. You grabbed at the clips of his chest piece, and, taking the hint, he shucked his armor off faster than he ever had before. Once his chest was bare, you wrapped your arms around him and pulled him down to you. Your mouths clashed together and he instinctively lined himself up with you.

With a groan, he broke away from your deep kiss and glanced between your face and your hips. You grabbed the back of his head and pulled him down even with your face again. You stretched your neck enough to whisper into his ear, “Please Hunter. I need you.”

That was all the permission he needed. Kissing you again, he moved his hands from your hips to your knees and pushed your legs apart before breaching into your tight heat with his leaking cock. He gave you time to adjust to his size, pushing in gradually before bottoming out. You moaned his name and jerked your hips upward, Hunter immediately following your lead.

He pistoned himself in and out of you, hitting harder and deeper with each thrust. You both moaned in tandem, and the sound was like music to his ears. He switched gears, going for speed over depth, and you were tightening around him again soon enough. Too soon.

“Fuck,” he panted. “Don’t wake up yet,” he said.

You laughed, and the sound melted into a gasp as he brought you closer to the edge. You dragged your nails down his back, and when he groaned you said “This is real Hunter.”

He dipped his head down to the side of your neck, and the feeling of his hot breath there made you whimper. “Say my name again,” he said before latching onto where your neck met your shoulder and sucking a dark mark there.

“H-hunterrr…” you groaned, drawing his name out as you finally gave in and came around him, your body tightening and milking him for everything he had. He felt each movement and cursed as he spilled inside of you, enough to leak out of you and onto the roof below.

Reluctantly, he pulled out of you, then collapsed onto his elbows and his hair hung in your face. You gripped both sides of his face with your hands and pulled him into yet another soulful kiss. When you broke apart, gasping for breath, Hunter pressed his forehead into yours.

You ran your fingers through his hair and spoke softly. “Hey, Hunter?” You said.

“Yes?” He said, rolling onto his side and pulling you even closer to him.

“You too,” you said.

Nothing in the galaxy could have made him happier at that moment.
