Work Text:
Amanda Grayson was standing outside of the lavatory waiting patiently for her son to exit. This of course may be awhile for he was currently retching out the contents of his breakfast. Amanda knew that her baby boy was nervous and anxious not that he would admit it though because if he did that it would require him admitting that his emotions are causing this reaction and not that his morning meal just didn't sit right today. Amanda could sense Sarek questioning the situation through their bond. She just sent her amusement back and Sarek turned back to the council that was commencing. At that moment Spock walks out of the lavatory and Amanda reaches out her hands toward him.
" Spock, come here, let me see you," Amanda says in that soft voice only a mother could make. Spock didn't come immediately though no it took more urging from his amused and slightly worried mother. She urged him to come to her with her hands and got a simple response in return.
" No" Spock was nervous and did not need his mother's meddling to calm him down. That didn't Stop Amanda though, when she sets her mind to something she sees it through and gets it.
" Spock." Once again her voice conveys a voice only a mother could make but this one is more demanding than her last one. Spock, who is a genius even on a planet full of intelligent beings knows he better do what his mother says and reluctantly makes his way to her. She raises her hands to his collar and could just tell that the nervousness he is feeling is killing him, but he won't let it show or at least he's trying not to.
" There's no need to be anxious. You'll do fine." She knew he hated the word 'fine'. Though of course, that was something he refused to admit since it is completely illogical to hate a word. It distracts him from the halls of the more intimidating council room where his future will be decided.
" I am hardly anxious, mother." He pauses though and that pause contradicts everything he just said. He then continued and the words were the ones that Amanda expected.
" And fine has variable definitions, fine is unacceptable." He sounds so much like his father every day and Amanda wonders how she got so lucky with the two Vulcans in her life. She also wonders how T'Pring could leave her little boy for his childhood tormentor. Of course, she never liked the girl, to begin with, and Spock was more than happy to end the bond between them, but that doesn't mean she could understand it. So instead she continues to work at his collar trying to straighten it up before he is called into the council chambers. An annoyed and most probably embarrassed Spock reaches up and grabs her hands to stop her and when he doesn't let go she knows the playful mood has changed into something deeper.
" May I ask a personal query?" Amanda stops herself from rolling her eyes before she looks into his oh so Human eyes and sees a soft concern, not at all about the upcoming meeting.
" Anything."
" Should I choose to complete the Vulcan discipline of kolinahr and purge all emotion, I trust you will not feel it reflects judgment upon you." Amanda smiles at him softly and touches his face. That was her little boy, the concern he felt for her and her emotions were the little toddler who didn't yet know the cruelty of his peers and thought his mother's human emotions were as valuable as precious gems.
" As always, whoever you choose to be, you will have a proud mother." Soon after Spock is called into the chamber and Amanda is left waiting by herself while her son and husband await the council's decision. She wouldn't be surprised if her husband didn't know the answer no matter his status and position on the council. His knowing would show an illogical familial bias. If Amanda had to guess she was waiting for about fifteen minutes before Spock burst through the doors and quickly walked past her without a word.
" Spock," Amanda says, trying to keep up and get his attention. When that fails she tries again with a little more force and gets her desired response.
" Spock!" He turned, and she saw that his eyes were ablaze with anger, the anger she hasn't seen since he was a little boy defending her and her husband's honor. She gets this sinking feeling in her gut and asks.
" They declined your application," Amanda said sure that she was right but when he pretty much scoffs she knew she was wrong.
" Worse mother, I declined them." He then turned and left the building. Amanda did not follow him though knowing that there was nothing she could do to settle him. She waited for the doors to open again and when they did her husband walked out, and she could sense his own anger within him.
"Did you know that he applied to Starfleet?" His tone was not accusing but was void of nothingness.
" I had a feeling. He asked me about my own time at the Academy and the following years as an officer. I told him though my service was brief it was some of the most satisfying and rewarding years of my life." Sarek did not react the way she suspected him to. Though the anger was still coursing through him she was starting to suspect it wasn't directed at their son.
" It was logical for him to have a backup plan considering the circumstances." Her husband's voice drifted off uncharacteristically, and she found herself asking.
" What happened there? Why are you both furious?" Instead of denying the emotion Sarek grabs her hand and takes her to a more secluded part of the building. When they are alone Sarek gathered her into a hug, and she hung on for dear life.
" Sarek, please just tell me what happened." Sarek didn't let up when he answered instead burrowed his face into her neck and breathed in.
" They accepted him as was expected. Then illogically they commented that it was ' remarkable' that he achieved so much despite his disadvantage. Amanda, they referred to you as a disadvantage in front of me and Spock." Amanda just held on tighter. She hasn't seen Sarek like this since that night when Spock got into his fight, and they got into theirs. Only if Spock knew how much he cared.
" You are not a disadvantage, Amanda," Sarek tells her burrowing his face deeper into her neck. She strokes the back of his head trying to comfort him.
" Hey you don't have to point out the obvious Sarek, I've been told that it's illogical." At her poor attempt at humor during a humorless time Sarek lifted his head and kissed her.
" So you're not mad at Spock?" She asked and Sarek pulled back confused.
" Why would I be upset? He was able to accomplish something in a way I never will be able to."
" How so?" Amanda asked, now confused even more. Sarek hesitated before taking her hand.
" He fought for a woman he feels dearly for." Amanda finally understands, Sarek wasn't mad at Spock but at the council and more so himself for responding the way he did. She hugs him tighter and whispers.
" You've fought for me Ashayam just in a different way. If you hadn't then we wouldn't be here, and we wouldn't be the very proud parents of a future Starfleet officer." She felt Sarek's agreement through the bond, and he held her tighter. She has never in her life felt so loved.
