Keqing worked tirelessly for the Liyue Qixing, even past exhaustion and burn out, not believing in breaks. She had a job to do so she was going to do it. Ningguang, however, has noticed a substantial decrease in the quality of her work. She was focused on profits above all else so she understood the importance of a proper work life balance.
Even though Keqing was showing up day after day she was moving at a noticeably slower pace than normal. She was brutally efficient and disciplined, she would skip lunch breaks and work tirelessly through weekends. But she was slowing down considerably now, she would zone out during meetings and needed to be reminded of things more frequently. When this was pointed out to her by Ningguang she became frustrated and let her pride get in the way of her constructive criticism.
The Tainquan knew Keqing needed a break, something to whip her back into shape. She couldn’t afford to let an employee as important as her work herself into complete exhaustion. She decided she would hold an intervention, just one on one to discuss the matter of her burn out to try and try to come to an amicable solution to the problem.
When Keqing was called to the Jade chamber in the evening she was already in a bad mood. She was busy all day doing the dirty work of Ningguang, dealing with pesky land owners trying to swindle their way into cheaper rates. She had to have a keen eye to spot subtle inconsistencies in income reports and inventory lists, and the tedious work left her mind numb from the boredom of the work. She was frustrated with all the arguing she had to endure during the past week. So when she stepped in to see an empty Jade chamber with just Ninggang, a table and a full course meal she could do nothing but groan as she begrudgingly shuffled over to sit across from Ninggang at the table.
“Greetings, Keqing, I hope it wasn’t too much trouble to get here. I never know where you are these days.” Ninggang took a sip of her tea before reaching over to pour a cup for Keqing.
“I was in Qingce village, negotiating on your behalf, I’ll have you know.” Keqing already had no patience, she was not about to deal with Ningguang’s usual games teasing remarks. “ The trip back here was miserable, as well. You made me travel across all of Liyue twice today!”
“My apologies, Keqing. I didn’t know that I was putting you under so much pressure.” She raised her hand to her chest to show her honesty but it seemed like too much to Keqing, like she was laying it on too thick.
“I’m glad you brought this up so quickly, however, as this was the intended topic of discussion tonight.” Ningguang began dishing herself as she motioned for the woman across from her to do the same. “You, my Yuheng, are overworked. While I was prepared to chastise you for burning yourself out, perhaps I am to blame as well, no matter how much I hate to admit it.” Keqing let out a dignified huff in agreement.
Keqing ate a bite of her jade parcels before looking at Ningguang, “I have noticed this is affecting your work performance. It would be a shame if you worked yourself to a breaking point so I would like to urge you to take a break. A vacation of sorts, in hopes that you will return to work reinvigorated and ready to do your best again.
The words took their time to process in Keqing’s head for a moment. A vacation ? Surely The Tianquan couldn’t afford for one of her highest ranking employees to take a vacation. What would that even entail? She had no frame of reference, and she was worried that she would instead grow lazy from the lack of responsibility. There was no way she could take a break, despite how much she lamented the quantity of her work, it's crucial that she does it.
She needed to prove that she was capable, needed to be a role model for all those who looked up to her. She could not take this break.
“I’m afraid I must refuse, despite how much I think I would enjoy it.” Keqing stared down at her plate expecting a negative response from Ningguang. Despite how complex the woman seemed, she was awfully predictable when it came to friendly conversation.
“If you know you would enjoy it, why must you decline? Surely even you can see the value in a short break?” Ningguang cocked her head at the polite response. Keqing came in with a scowl on her face. She was frustrated and exhausted, and the first words she spoke were of complaint. Ningguang knew she was stubborn, but she didn’t think she was stubborn enough to be ignorant to the fact she needed a break.
Despite Keqing's polite response she was about to lose her composure, she simply didn’t have the patience to deal with Ningguang and her games. What was the woman even trying to get out of her anyway? Why was she trying to get her to take a break? It must have been a test, she thought, to ensure she was dedicated to her work above all else.
“I do not, I am content with the amount of work I am doing now.”
Ningguang didn’t like how Keqing refused to budge. She had noticed how she hid behind a cordial mask as soon as the topic of her work performance was brought up, even though she never had anything to hide. “While you may be content, I am not. I have noticed a considerate decrease in your efficiency and have noticed a shift in your attitude towards work. I believe it is in you and your career’s best interest to take a break.”
“Nonsense. I am fine with how things are now.”
Now Ningguang was becoming frustrated. Despite how mature and responsible the girl was she was still just as stubborn as she always had been. “What must I do to convince you, then? I can guarantee no decrease in pay, I can assure there will be an adequate substitute while you are away. I can even provide a companion should you wish, perhaps even me if time allows for it.”
“But declining is simply not an option, it would be actively harmful to you and the Qixing for you to remain working under your current conditions.”
Keqing let out a huff. It hurt her pride to hear those words come out of her mouth. Harm the Qixing was surely an exaggeration. But what if she was slowing down? That just meant she had to work harder to get back to where she was before, didn’t it? How could she grow as a person if she quit while she was experiencing a rough patch in her career? But what if Ningguang was right? She was having a difficult time focusing lately and her patience was always threatening to crack under the weight of all the pressure she had accumulated throughout the years.
The more she thought about it the more she understood where Ningguang was coming from. She knew she was right. But what now? She had no clue what to do during a vacation. To relax she would sleep in and read a book, maybe go out for a late night walk through the flower fields. She couldn’t do that for a whole week or two, she would quickly grow insane with boredom.
“Okay— so what would I do on this vacation? I’ve never taken one before.” Ningguang was glad she asked, maybe she could live vicariously through her. She was longing for a break too, if she was being honest with herself.
“Perhaps you could make plans with a friend, I’m sure you could find someone to spare an afternoon or two. You could also leave Liyue, Sumeru is full of things to do for someone such as yourself.”
Ningguang was struck with an idea. Her eyes lit up as she rested her head over her hands on the table, staring into Keqing’s eyes. “I even have an idea for how we could start it off tonight.” She laughed at her own thoughts before she leaned back in her chair with an amused grin.
“I wonder when the last time was since The Yuheng has had sex. Surely with how busy you are, it must have been ages ago.” Ningguang was laying the sudden seduction on thick. She made it crystal clear what her new found intentions were for tonight.
Keqing scoffed as she averted her gaze from Ningguang’s sultry look. She couldn’t believe how crass she was being, how sudden the embarrassing question was. All she knew was that she would not tell the truth, she didn’t even have to answer the question. Certainly not truthfully anyways. She tried to manufacture a believable lie as she masked her embarrassment by taking another bite of her food and sipping her tea. There was an awkward silence in the room as more and more time elapsed between the present moment and when the question had been asked.
She couldn’t think of anything that wouldn’t be a blatant lie so she decided to give her the bare minimum.
“A while.”
Ningguang smiled.
“That could change tonight you know, Beidou will vouch for me, just ask her” Ningguang let out a sweet laugh as she took a sip of her tea.
“Ahh… That’s not necessary” Keqing let out an awkward laugh as she tried to ignore the not so subtle burn in her abdomen. It really had been a long time, too long. She fought with the idea for a moment before she decided that surely nothing could go wrong.
"Okay, do me then."
