3.13: After Dinner

Summary:

What happens after Carlos' dinner for one when TK gets home from his AA meeting at the Y.

Notes:

It was just stuck in my head during hiatus how at ease Carlos arrives home after the argument (and before seeing TK with the pictures) that I felt they had some discussion the same night or the next morning and then this came out (i just finally typed it all out.)

Work Text:

TK gets up from the table and walks over to Carlos. He kisses his head and runs his hands down his past his neck. His inner debate on if he should stay sitting across from him at the dinner table or just leave won with the idea that he should just give Carlos some space. He doesn't really have much places to go due to the open floor plan of the loft so he elects for the only room with a door. He stands in the bedroom and looks to the bathroom door. He was just going to change and sit as far as he could on the sofa but then thinks a shower would give Carlos enough time to finish his food and then decided where he wanted to be.

TK doesn't know how to navigate this. It's their first argument since living together again and he's so used to just finding another room to be or leaving all together. So, he goes for a shower this time. He's not angry at Carlos, he's not even frustrated. He understands Carlos wanting to know everything about him, everything he's been through but some things he just wouldn't understand. And Carlos is a good listener, hell a great listener but sometimes he needs more than that. He needs someone that's been in the position he has, and the truth of the matter is Carlos just hasn't.

TK grabs clothes to change into and walks to the bathroom. He pulls the sweater that Carlos had complimented earlier today over his head and places it nicely with the other dirty clothes. He turns the water on in the shower and strips the rest of his clothes off as he briefly waits for the water to turn his preferred temperature.

He stays in there a little longer than usual thinking about, well, everything. Overcoming so much only for Sadie to take it all away. Like he said to Carlos earlier this week, he loves going to the meetings he just hates why he has to. This time it wasn't even his own doing so he can't even get mad at himself, not that that was healthy in the first place, but he's just mad at how this shit follows him no matter what. He stays in there long enough that the water turns cold. He feels a little guilty at the idea that he might've taken all of it from Carlos, but he remembers noticing Carlos' towel being damp before he started the water so at least there's that.

He dries himself off and slips into a t-shirt and pajama pants. He dries his hair off some more then hangs the towel on the rack next to Carlos’.

He walks out of the bedroom and looks at the bed. It’s too early to go to sleep right now and there’s nothing much else in their bedroom besides his phone, which has about 15 minutes before it’s fully dead. He grabs it from where he put it before he took his pants off and brings it to his side of the bed to charge. He can see the flashing of the TV through the sliding door but doesn’t hear noise from it. Maybe Carlos will turn it up once he walks back in.

TK opens the door slowly and wonders for a moment if he’ll be met with an even more upset Carlos at interrupting his alone time. But no, that wasn’t Carlos. He has to stop letting his past relationships dictate what he does in this one. If anything, if anything Carlos would make an excuse on why he has to go to bed early or go for a walk or work out. Carlos doesn’t have an angry bone in his body, unless he’s really pushed, and he seemed more upset than angry.

He opens the door fully and sees that Carlos is nowhere near the TV. TK steps out of the room and sees Carlos now back in the kitchen. TK hears the sink turn on and the sound of pans being scrubbed. Carlos doesn’t even notice TK had finished his shower and came back in. TK makes his way to the couch, at some point Carlos will turn and see him and TK will decide then what to say, or maybe they’ll just sit in silence. He notices the TV is on the weather channel, probably why the volume was down. Neither of them understood the reason for someone to be on TV yelling about how hot or cold it’ll be outside.

TK grabs the nearest magazine and sits down on the end closest to the bedroom. He gets so lost in a particular article he doesn't even notice Carlos turned the sink off until he hears a 'hey' right by him. He jumps slightly at the noise and lowers his magazine.

"Hey," TK draws out softly. He folds the magazine back up and places it on the coffee table.

"I really could still make you something, if you wanted," Carlos says, this time fully genuine.

"No, it's okay," TK smiles.

Carlos nods.

TK watches him, his smile now softening.

Carlos breathes in. "I'm sorry," he says. He looks down at the floor then back to TK.

TK almost asks "for what?", getting lost by looking at Carlos' sudden shyness but then he remembers why they weren't sitting side by side in the first place. "It's okay," TK says.

"No, it's not. I shouldn't have reacted like that."

"Carlos it's fine."

"No, I should've allowed you the space to..."

"Carlos it's okay. It's new to you. You're not always going to know how to react to everything," TK smiles.

"Yeah..." He looks to the floor again.

"Come here," TK grins and takes Carlos' hand to pull him down by him on the couch.

Carlos takes his spot by TK, crossing his leg to sit on.

TK turns to him. "I do appreciate you wanting to ... know more about it." TK nods. "I'm so used to others running away or just ignoring me when I talked about it, but I do also need you to be okay with what I do and don't tell you, at least with this. I need you to get used to someone knowing that about me and you maybe not knowing."

"And if it takes time to get used to?"

"Then it takes time." TK shrugs and tilts his head.

Carlos gives a soft smile and nods. "Okay."

"So...," TK looks at the TV then back at Carlos. "How's the weather?"

His face cracks into a big grin. Carlos lets out a small laugh and shakes his head. TK grabs the remote with one hand as he scoots more comfortably on the couch and grabs Carlos with the other to pull him down to his chest. Carlos follows with ease as TK wraps his arms around him and kisses his head.
